Am I Dramatic?

Earlier today, I was feeling fairly miserable; I was thinking about the fact that I don't really have anyone I can consider a friend at university, and that I'm so terrified of everyone that it took me four hours of hiding in my room, absolutely starving, before I could work up the courage to go into the kitchen and cook my supper when there were strangers in there.

And then the quiet girl to whom I had barely spoken came into the stranger-filled kitchen and put her food into the fridge, looking as unnerved as I had felt, and I took heart from this and told her about my four hours of pathetic nervousness and asked her whether she watched Torchwood, and she invited me into her room and let me watch it with her and we mocked the Torchwood team together.

Guys. Guys. I interacted with a real person.

I am so happy right now.

Also RHYS RHYS HEARTS FOR RHYS, and 'this is quite homoerotic' was brilliant. Jack/Rhys, anyone?

This post made me smile ever so much - partly because I can completely relate to the nervousness of a stranger-filled dorm kitchen, and partly of course due to your wonderful success! :D

For what it's worth, I'm a terribly nervous person and I've managed to get a house with three friends here in my second year. I managed to acquire three whole friends! If I can manage, I'm sure you will too, haha ♥

[identity profile] amy-wolf.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was in the Peace Corps, it took me ages to make a real friend there. Then the nice young lady in the house where I rented a room (before I got my own bamboo hut) asked if it would be okay for someone she knew from school to text-message me, because her friend had never met an American before. Texts followed, and then pizza, and now it's years after I got back, and we still email and send each other presents, and she writes to my family, and her and my mom are sending emails behind my back, and my parents are getting a bit, "Why must she be heterosexual so you two cannot get a domestic partnership? We'd love to have her as our new daughter-in-law!"

So, er, yeah. Taking a while to get friends can sometimes mean making really good ones.

[identity profile] amy-wolf.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that I'm implying that making friends necessarily leads to your parents getting intensely attached, and wanting you to marry them regardless of the sexual orientations involved. I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen to everyone.

[identity profile] yaminokurisu.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Gosh, real people! Well done :]

See, I thought about Jack/Rhys but ended up rejecting it - we need at least one down-to-earth character who doesn't seem to fancy Jack and who is actually likeable! I have similar hopes for Martha, but I doubt that will happen, really.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, Jack does not DESERVE Rhys! I am angry with Jack. I think Rhys/Ianto ... Oh lord. Rhys/Ianto. *draws little hearts*

And HOORAY FOR REAL LIFE PEOPLE!

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
They did, but in my head at that point I was going, "YAY, now Gwen and Jack will come and rescue their loved ones".

And I was 50% right. *scowls at Jack*

I have such trouble making friends, so yay for you! Torchwood-mocking brings people together.

[identity profile] sashwizzled.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww. ♥ Yeah, I got really nervous all the time in halls last year - it took me two days to work up the nerve to go to the kitchen when I first arrived. Even at the end of the year, I only really went in in the dead of the night. So I'm really glad you got on well there. :3

[identity profile] dancesontrains.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, I know! I stayed in my room for the first afternoon reading a book, before going down and finding a room filled with ciggie smoke D:

I did hang around a lot, but the end of the year it was very clear that I had little in common with most of them. I made very good friends with my fellow outsiders, though :)

[identity profile] dancesontrains.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Wahoo :D

I haven't seen Torchwood yet, but Jack/Rhys does sound good. What about Gwen/Jack/Rhys?

Would meeting the non-fandomy friends of a pixellated person count as real people, I wonder?

[identity profile] dracothelizard.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurrah for you!

Jack/Rhys/Gwen, obviously. Or Jack/Lady from Rhys' work.

[identity profile] strangeumbrella.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Your story brought a smile to my face! :D (not... not quite that manic a smile, probably, but still! (Unlike, as we have discovered, both Kate and Loz, who really do smile like that.))

I am totally not against Jack/Rhys, if only for the phenomenon of Rhys being gradually seduced and being really annoyed about it but unable to resist anyway; although I am still in love with Ianto/Rhys omg, and was frankly a little saddened at their non-interaction. (THERE'S STILL TIME.)

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
I am still in love with Ianto/Rhys

YOU ARE GOOD AND TRUE.

=D go Riona! (I would be happy in this accomplishment too.)

[identity profile] averysmallthing.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Talking to people rocks it in ways that are difficult to explain to people who can just talk to people without thinking about it. Yay for you and quiet girl.

[identity profile] livii.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so happy for you, hon! It'll get better as it keeps happening - for sure.

Interaction with real life humans... Well done! :)

Well done! Like minds will find each other eventually. Did you manage to establish whether she watches Top Gear as well?

It took me an entire year of university before I made any friends, so you're doing much better than I did. Fortunately, the ones I made after that first miserable year were ace and are still my best friends fifteen years later...

[identity profile] nicked-metal.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Go you!

You rock :D

I'm just the same when the whole of China comes round. I've got snacks in my room though - I could survive in here for about a week.

If you ever need to escape, you can come here, if you want. I have Scrabble! :]

This is Jamie, from the Internet/your English seminars, by the way. I like your journal, so I have added you. Feel free to add me back. We can compare stylistic preferences.

Don't be silly - "Are you from the Internet" is the best conversation starter I've ever heard!

A++++++++++++++++++

[identity profile] moogle62.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoo, real people! I am ridiculously impressed. The perils of shared accomodation are already making me somewhat nervous, all, you know, nearly two years in advance.

I bow before your social prowess!

[identity profile] eva-kasumi.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
1. YAY! You are wondrous and awesome and should not feel awkward about interacting with others because you excel at being SUPER AWESOME but I will concede that I do the EXACT SAME THING. Well, not currently because now I live in a suite with friends, but if I didn't? Like last year? YEAH THAT'S ME TOO. But when you finally make friends? God, it's so SO nice. She sounds awesome. Good job. =D

2. I have not watched the episode yet but I am already so excited for Rhys! And and and. I. Jack/Rhys? But. But I'm a Rhys/Ianto shipper! I. OT3?

[identity profile] eva-kasumi.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Is it the episode? Did the episode do it? I started shipping them last year when Jack left and [livejournal.com profile] amethystbubble and I were discussing how Rhys and Ianto were both being treated like shit on their end of the relationship (it was sort of true for Ianto at the time, and has ALWAYS BEEN TRUE FOR RHYS ARG) and they both just wanted to be looooved and go on dates and... hey, wait a second...
And then we started plotting the Preacherfic and said, WE WILL WRITE THIS. And it will be epic.

*cheers* Go you! Geeks reprsent! And yes, Torchwood was all kinds of awesome.

(And I was just like that at university too.)
