Final Fantasy XIII-2 is now in my possession! I'm not yet at the ending on my XIII replay, but I thought I'd load my post-game save and play through the end again before I began the sequel. WILD SOBBING.
Vanille is a really interesting character; it's as if someone took the 'perky girl' RPG stereotype, took a long, hard look at it and went, 'Okay, the world is in serious danger of ending; why are you so happy?' I don't think I'll ever be able to view characters from that particular mould in quite the same way again.
Regarding XIII-2: I've only played the prologue so far. Here are my (non-spoilery) thoughts:
- Lightning is awesome.
- I have absolutely no idea what's going on.
And since writing the above I've played a little more! My disjointed musings so far are under the cut. I've only just acquired the first Artefact, so I haven't really got very far.
I worried from trailers, based entirely on the way Noel introduced himself as 'Noel. Noel Kreiss' whilst thrusting a thumb at his chest, that Noel would be an arrogant arsehole (not that arrogant arseholes can't be interesting, but I worried that he would be a particular, rather dull species of arrogant arsehole from those, er, two seconds of the trailer; look, I never said it was a rational worry). As it turns out, though, he just seems to be kind of awkward, which I suppose is understandable if he's been on his own for goodness knows how long. Incidentally, I love that Serah's reaction to that overblown introduction in the actual game is '...okaaay...'
I find it hilarious that everyone keeps bitching about Noel when he's standing right next to them. 'I don't think you should trust that guy, Serah.' HE'S RIGHT THERE.
Final Fantasy XIII has trained me to DO EVERYTHING, OPEN ALL THE TREASURE SPHERES, LOOK AT ALL THE THINGS, TALK TO EVERYONE BEFORE MOVING ON, YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO COME BACK. It's a difficult mindset to shake off, and it takes much longer in a game where there are actually loads of people around and multiple routes to places.
I'm incredibly confused by the new Crystarium. Please come back, nice Crystarium where I knew exactly what all the crystals would do before I activated them. I'm also quite confused by the fact that my weapon is a Moogle that transforms into a bow, but at least that doesn't make me fear that I might be levelling up incorrectly.
It makes a lot of sense to me that Serah is a strict teacher and all her pupils, although they respect and like her, are a little afraid of her. She might seem timid or fragile at first glance, but in fact she has a will of solid adamantite. Which is unsurprising, really, considering her sister. I think I could come to like her a lot over the course of this game. We'll see!
I really like all the dialogue choices you can make! I'm a little conflicted over them, though, because on the one hand I want to take the game seriously but on the other hand some of the dialogue options are hilarious. There's one point at which Noel comments on how everyone in New Bodhum seems to be a sort of family, and you have four options for your response. 'You should settle down here too!' felt inappropriate, as I'd only just met Noel. I wasn't going to choose 'If only Snow was here...', because 'If only Lightning was here...' was another option, and the way I play Serah, although she loves Snow, Lightning always comes first. So I chose the 'If only Lightning was here...' option. But some part of me was deeply, deeply tempted by 'The cat is my only family!'
I am really, really hoping to see Sazh in this game. AND VANILLE AND FANG, EVEN THOUGH THAT'S REALLY UNLIKELY. LET ME DREAM. Come on, XIII-2, don't let me down!
lol Snow you've been replaced by a cat
Are any of you playing this game? Planning to play it? How are you finding it so far?

Just. You know. Just so you know.
...actually reading entries is for losers.

And for now, I just got an almost free copy of Uncharted 3, which is pretty exciting!

At present, I have zero interest in the game; I'm planning to wait and see what my flist has to say about it before I make a decision. Probably what will actually happen is that I will continue to read your entries because I don't care about the game, and then I'll be all, "Wait! This sounds really good! Why did I just spoil myself silly?" Which is exactly what happened with Uncharted.

I quite like Serah, but Noel has yet to really interest me, and as he's half of the main cast that's a bit of a problem. I'm mildly intrigued by the fact that he looks like the lovechild of Squall and Yuna, though.

I actually kind of get the new Crystarium! Basically every role gives a certain bonus, whether it's to HP, attack, or magic, and you get a better bonus on the bigger spheres. It's there so if you want to powerhouse Noel and Serah's magic, you can level up their Ravager role on all the big spheres and leave the HP boost that comes with COM to smaller spheres. I kind of like it.
I know a lot of people were complaining when the demo came out that Noel had no personality, but I think the 2 hours before the stuff the demo covered was really vital to understanding him as a character. His life story is so sad!

I have yet to develop any real attachment to Noel, but his background certainly is heartbreaking, and I like his motivations. I'll wait until I can get a clearer understanding of his character before I pass judgement.

Ahahaha, Versus is never going to be released. We need a new Duke Nukem Forever now that Duke Nukem Forever has actually come out, and Versus has kindly volunteered.
