None Of This Is Even Real!
Right. So,
gayjunglefever begged me to watch Life on Mars and, because I can never deny her anything, that's exactly what I did.
Sam-being-hit-by-the-car was the most horrible shock in the world. DAMN YOU LIFE ON MARS. I bet he's dead and everything 'in the past' is a hallucination.
...er, wait, dead people don't hallucinate, do they?
Unconscious, then. NONE OF IT IS REALLY HAPPENING. OOOH.
Or, y'know, he really is from 1973 and he's been having remarkably accurate hallucinations about living in the future.
...or maybe he did just time-travel. I always have to turn it into some bizarre theory, don't I? The thought that he might actually have time-travelled didn't even occur to me until just now. But the whole hearing-voices-from-the-future and 'you're in a coma, none of this is real' thing would probably suggest otherwise.
I became aware, during the whole "Can you remember what happened?" "What the hell is going on? I need my mobile." "Mobile what?" conversation, that I was grinning in the particular lunatic way my friends have dubbed the 'Obsessive Grin'. Oh dear. This does not bode well, unless you are
gayjunglefever.
YES, SAM, PUT YOUR HAND ON RANDOM LADY'S CHEST AND CLOSE YOUR EYES. THAT ISN'T CREEPY AT ALL.
I quite like Sam. Certainly he seems a decent bloke in comparison with the 1973 ones I've seen so far. Is that an accurate reflection of attitudes to women at the time? Because I usually consider myself quite relaxed in terms of gender issues, but I find their behaviour pretty shocking.
The man on the telly has the silliest facial hair that I have ever seen.
There's something very odd about Sam's eyes, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Also he somehow reminds me of Pete Tyler, which, given his surname and the general crossoverability of Doctor Who with anything, especially something with a theme of time-travel, is somewhat worrying.
Every time he wakes up I think 'right, this time he'll be back in 2006'. Which is silly, because that's hardly going to happen in the first episode, is it?
Hey, is that 'Baba O'Reilly'? HOORAY FOR BABA OH MY GOD WHAT IS GENE DOING TO SAM'S NECK OH GOD IT'S TOO EARLY FOR A LUNATIC SLASH PAIRING.
"He doesn't need me, and I certainly don't need him." NO, MIND, IT IS NOT DENIAL AND YOU ARE A LUNATIC.
The background music was part of the solution! Clever!
AHAHAHAHA TOTALLY GRATUITOUS LEAPING OVER DESK. All the dramatic slowing down and speeding up and changes in music are giving me a severe case of the giggles. Probably not the intended effect, but I never could take these things seriously.
Stop giving each other Looks, you two, I'm trying to be sane here.
Oh, God, it's a clash between principles and trying to prevent what he knows will happen in the future. This is interesting - what do you do if you know the future actions the criminal would take if he were let out?
...well, er, what can you do? I doubt the jury will take his word for it. But he could withhold the doctor's note in an attempt to change things. Would that be ethical, though, even if he knows that the man will kill again? Not showing them it could save a girl's life.
I really like the voices he hears from the 'real' world. Also when he realises that something in the past affects the future. I just generally like it when his real world and his current world collide.
ER, SAM, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? RUNNING AWAY FROM THE HYPNOTHERAPIST WHO IS SAYING 'LISTEN TO ME AND YOU CAN GET OUT OF THIS'? SILLY BOY.
Oh, okay, he's going to jump off a building. Did the hypnotherapist tell him to do that, or is he just leaping to conclusions? (Also: ACK VERTIGO.)
Conclusion? I'm certainly interested, and will watch the next episode as soon as possible. What worries me is that it looks a prime candidate for Insane Crossovers, as if I needed another of those fandoms.
