A surprising amount of the stuff in The X-Files isn't alien-related! I thought it would be All Aliens All The Time, but it's got its share of terrestrial supernatural happenings.
I remember enjoying the Fight Club film (although it's been a long time since I saw it), but I did prefer the book; as you say, its narration is extremely strong.

Max Barry's Lexicon which I'm reminded when I re-read it as interestingly philosophical about language, persusasion and bias as well as being a story about some very unfortunate people having a not very good time and possibly also being kidnapped.
That does sound intriguing, although I just checked out the first scene on Amazon's preview and immediately recoiled from the eye horror.
