I have to agree; Gene seemed far more awesome before the show started going LOOK, LOOK AT HOW AWESOME HE IS, EVERYONE BOW DOWN TO GENE. I admired the Doctor more before they slathered on the God/Jesus (NOT A PAIRING) symbolism, too. Look, writers, I will quickly get fed up with the character traits you wish to portray if you stick them in the foreground with a giant blinking arrow.
