I have teeny tiny niggles of a plot bunny; it's AU from the pilot where Jessie never burns up.
Basically, Sam gets called because Dean was found wandering around a room full of corpses babbling about demons, and they put him in a mental hospital. It turns out to be some sort of demonic whatsit making him act crazy, but there's lots of Sam talking to the psychiatrist and having conversations like, "Did Dean actually see your mother burn to death?"
"I don't know. He never really talked about it."
"Mmm-hmmm." *makes notes on the pad* "So, what was your father like?"
ETA: I just realized that would totally be a less-dark version of Hellblazer.
Other ETA: Riona, please tell me if this plot idea has been done to death, or otherwise involves overused cliches. In my head it's turned into an evil mental hospital where they're collecting demon hunters (because just about all demon hunters have massive issues of some sort, which makes people who know them less likely to suspect an evil crazy-making spell when they suddenly crack up), in order to neutralize them. Sam spends much of the story in the, "I know the demon stuff is real, but can't say anything, and the psychiatrist has unnervingly good points about our not-exactly-healthy childhood, and how Dean could have serious problems," position; Dean alternates between crazy-making spell crazy, trying to spot and get Sam to believe him about the evil plot, and denying that he'd have any reason to develop mental health issues. I'm hoping to end it on the weirdly uncomfortable note where Dean's all, "All better now! Let's forget all about it!" and Sam's like, "Um, do you think we should talk about this?", and Dean just goes, "ALL BETTER NOW! LET'S FORGET ALL ABOUT IT!"
