Awww, that's so lovely of your parents! I firmly believe that the original Pokémon games are the most perfect videogame formula ever devised. (Actually, an emulator could be the solution to my second-generation-gameless blues, couldn't it? Playing on an emulator isn't quite the same as playing on a real GameBoy, but Pokémon Crystal on an emulator is better than no Pokémon Crystal at all.)
