Tess died for a cause, and in the end Joel rendered her death pointless as well.
I'm not sure Joel ever believed in that cause, though. Baco and I were talking about this a little (and obviously this is just our own interpretation), but I sort of get the feeling Joel doesn't think much of humanity. Maybe if Sarah had died from a clicker it would be a little different - he would've been more inclined to want a vaccine, for one thing, and for another, I feel like he, uh, kind of thinks humanity sucks now. And honestly, he doesn't have much to prove otherwise - besides Ellie of course. Ellie is worth saving.
Also, I, uh, somehow missed the sexual connotation of "He tried to--". I just sort of skipped over that and filled in the last of that sentence with chop me up so he could eat me or something like that, because one of the things I really, really loved about the game is that Ellie is not sexualized and no one (except David? Maybe?) ever tried to rape her. No one tried to rape any of the women and it was such a relief to me that they were only ever trying to kill you. And that scene with David is still so incredibly horrifying, even if you don't see him trying to rape her, that it's -- I just want to point it out to all writers ever. RAPE IS NOT NECESSARY TO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT OR PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA! Maybe make it into a neon glowing sign or something.
