rionaleonhart: the mentalist: lisbon, with time counting down, makes an important call. (it's been an honour)

I Mistakenly Treated Him As A Responsible Adult.

Finally finishing that Mentalist fic nudged me into attempting a rewatch. I got two episodes into the first season, the only one I own on DVD, and immediately ordered the second and third.

This was such a good decision. I thought maybe I'd lost the ability to be engaged by television. But I love The Mentalist so much. I love Jane; I love Lisbon; I love Cho; I love Van Pelt. Rigsby is also there. (Sorry, Rigsby! I don't have anything in particular against you, but I love everyone else in the team so wildly that you pale in comparison.)

Jane's so tactile. I love that he's constantly touching the other members of the team. I love that his interactions with them always feel slightly flirtatious but never quite tip over the edge into actual hitting-on. I love his strange finding-the-van-keys waltz with Van Pelt around the office in 'Red Tide'.

(Rigsby is into Van Pelt, but their strange dance doesn't seem to unsettle Rigsby at all on that level. It catches his attention, but he just wants to see whether Jane will be able to find the keys. He doesn't think of Jane as a sexual being in any way. Van Pelt is new, though; she doesn't know Jane as well as the rest of the team. Was she wondering whether there was intent there?)

And I also love what an absolute mess Jane is. His family was murdered five years ago, and the murderer painted his calling card in blood on the bedroom wall, and Jane never cleaned it off. He sleeps underneath the smiley face drawn in the blood of his loved ones! He copes so unhealthily and it's great.

('I can see why you like this,' my housemate said. 'The main character's been horribly psychologically traumatised.'

I tried to protest, but later in the conversation I found myself saying, 'I don't particularly like House or Sherlock as characters. I don't know why this is the arsehole genius character I love. No, wait, I do; it's because he's been horribly psychologically traumatised. You're right. I'm predictable.'

I think it's also a factor that House and Sherlock are arseholes to everyone, colleagues and friends included, whereas Jane is an arsehole to many people but loves and cares for the team.)

Why did past me not write more Mentalist fanfiction that I could go back and read now? I can't believe I betrayed myself like this.
