I love Rachel and her friends. They so neatly encompass the spirit of what Pokemon should be- silly, corny names; getting attached to the ones you have despite their supposed inferiority; making friends INSTANTLY because you share the very important factor of loving Pokemon. She's endearing on that alone! Also, I've read a lot (a LOT) of Pokemon journey self-insert comics and this fits right in.
I feel compelled now to share my own self-insert journey protag, who I created at the incredibly young age of 25: for some reason he waited till adulthood to become a trainer professionally, met and later married Looker after his adventures with Team Flare, and became a multi-region champion because he would follow Looker to new regions to keep him safe, get drawn into the local Pokemon League while hubby was working, and then end up doing Looker's job for him. When they went to Alola it was on vacation and he was VERY ANGRY to get handed a plot hook five minutes after they arrived. "We're on vacation!" he wailed. "I wanted to spend time with you for once!" It's all incredibly entertaining; we've very happy together.
