More of The Last of Us, Part II! Seattle, day three. Just been through the bookshop, on the way to the aquarium.
Pfft, Joel is shipping Jesse and Ellie. Whoops!
I'm curious about whether we're going to get to see Ellie come out to Joel, and, if so, how much like my fic it'll be. (Obviously it can't be exactly like my fic, because in the fic Joel doesn't learn about Ellie's sexuality until Dina kisses Ellie at the dance, and the impression I'm getting is that in canon Joel knows before that. Unless Joel punching Seth was not 'hey, don't call Ellie a slur' but 'hey, don't say that Ellie's gay'? That might explain why Ellie and Joel argued over it.)
Oh, wow, I thought this flashback might be 'Ellie comes out to Joel'; I wasn't expecting it to be 'Ellie confronts Joel about his lie'!
I only just met up with Jesse! Don't send me out into the world with no friends again so soon! I was going 'oh, thank goodness, I've been so lonely' and NOW I'M ALONE AGAIN.
I WASN'T PREPARED FOR THE GAME TO THROW AN ENEMY AT ME WHEN I WAS USING THE CRAFTING BENCH
An aspect of the Last of Us universe that feels oddly familiar in 2020: posters dotted around for events that never took place.
These enemies who communicate with each other by whistling are sort of cool, but I miss friends! Where are friends?
I can't whistle, so, tragically, I don't think the murderous cultists would accept me into their ranks.
Bear the dog survived! I've managed to avoid killing three of the attack dogs so far. (I did admittedly kill Bear and then get killed twice, but Bear survived in the run in which I made it through that encounter!)
I thought the Nora chase sequence was great. I'm enjoying the opportunity to see Ellie so simultaneously panicky and furious.
WHY DID YOU TRY TO SHOOT ME WHEN YOU KNEW THERE WERE CLICKERS AROUND, WHAT ARE YOU DOING
I waited for a long time on the 'strike Nora with the crowbar' prompt, going 'hey, what if I just never hit the square button?', but it seems that just means you're caught in an eternal loop of Ellie looking ANGRY while a heartbeat sound plays in the background.
I am all for this scene where Ellie comes back to Jesse and Dina, shaking and bloodied and traumatised.
The fact that the ending of the original Last of Us takes place in Salt Lake City is much funnier after seeing The Book of Mormon. Salt Lake City isn't an actual place; it's a metaphor!
I wasn't really expecting this game to deal much with Joel's lie, especially given that he was killed so early on. But here Ellie is, in Salt Lake City, looking for answers.
Oh, God, are the bodies still going to be here? She probably suspects Joel tried to prevent the work on a vaccine, and from there she's probably worked out it would have killed or seriously harmed her; I don't know if it's occurred to her (or if she's allowed herself to think) that Joel might have killed everyone.
Ellie's physical reaction after Joel told her the truth was incredibly done.
Did Ellie and Joel ever reconcile, or was Joel's death especially painful for Ellie because they hadn't reconciled? Come to think of it, I don't think we saw Ellie and Joel interact at all in the early game, before his death; we just heard they'd had an argument after the dance.
No, wait, they had plans to watch a film the night he died, didn't they? So they must have been on speaking terms. Okay, good.
Jesse is coming with me! These games are so much better when you've got a companion.
I hope I don't get him killed.
I went into the optional infected-ridden underground car park and wasted a load of resources and thought it hadn't been worth it, but then Jesse and Ellie high-fived afterwards, and SCRATCH THAT, IT ABSOLUTELY WAS.
Ellie tells Jesse that Joel used to think she had a crush on him! I'm still really enjoying their friendship; the way they tease each other is very endearing.
Maybe I should actually write the fic where Joel doesn't die, so the pregnancy revelation happens under completely different circumstances, and Ellie, Dina and Jesse end up in some sort of strange cohabitation arrangement. They don't exactly have threesomes, because Ellie's not into guys, but Ellie will sometimes lean against the bedroom doorframe with her arms folded and shit-talk Jesse while he and Dina are having sex.
There's a moment from the first series of Prison Break I remember very vividly. A riot has broken out in the prison, and Dr Tancredi has found herself trapped in the infirmary. There's a shot of her crouching, clutching a makeshift blade, and there's nothing human in her eyes; she looks like a cornered animal. It really struck me.
I haven't watched Prison Break in years, but I've found myself thinking of that moment a lot while playing this game.
