BREAKING: Expedition Discovers Last Man On Earth That Doesn't Have A Podcast.
My brother and his wife gave me Spider-Man: Miles Morales for Christmas! I finished playing it a couple of days ago, and it was a lot of fun.
I'm delighted that a) I was able to stroke a cat in this game, and b) the cat's name was Spider-Man.
A note on the original game, before I launch into Miles Morales: I love that the answer to 'why don't Peter's loved ones realise he's Spider-Man when they have the same voice?' turns out to be 'they all realised ages ago, obviously'.
Peter Parker is so clearly thrilled to have someone to share all this Spider-Man stuff with. His animated welcome message in Miles's new suit! The fact that he bothered to set up all these holographic training stations! Programming the suit to give Miles fun facts about pigeons! It's very endearing.
I really miss his original face, though.
I sort of love that listening to J Jonah Jameson's show is a specifically Peter thing, because Peter is a huge masochist, and Miles can't understand why he does it at all.
New York in the winter is so pretty! Setting this game in a different season is a great way to prevent it from feeling too close to its predecessor.
Miles accidentally destroyed a bridge! This poor kid is not at all prepared for this level of guilt and I love it.
A nice little touch: if you defeat enemies by knocking them into the river, you can see them treading water. If I get the chance, I'll follow an enemy I knock off a building and see if the game makes them survive somehow; Spider-Man isn't supposed to kill!
I just checked, and, if you knock an enemy off a building, Miles will web them to the side of the building to prevent them from hitting the ground!
It's also a nice touch that, as Miles and Rio have only just moved into their new place, it slowly accumulates more of their personality as the story progresses.
The game wastes no time in telling you that Aaron is the Prowler. Very 'yes, we know you've seen Into the Spider-Verse, let's not pretend this is a revelation'.
I love the end of the reopening FEAST sidequest, where Miles goes up to Gloria in his Spider-Man outfit and is then confused and flustered to remember that, oh, yeah, that means she's not going to recognise him.
Very nice of the public to make me a new Spider-Man suit, but also... how did they make me a Spider-Man suit? How did they know my measurements? How did they know of and incorporate all the fancy technology required?
It's cute that Miles and the podcaster he listens to, Dani, are both a little starstruck by each other.
I can't believe the game doesn't give you the ability to swing around everywhere with a cat in a backpack until you've finished it. LET ME BRING SPIDER-MAN THE CAT INTO STORY SCENES, COWARDS. (Apparently you can have him in cutscenes on New Game Plus, though!)
And I've just realised this is my first post of 2022, so happy new year! ♥
