You've had a big break between playing the game, but I think one of the plotpoints of Royal!Akechi's S Link is that Joker noticed he was actually left-handed and had been holding himself back by playing with his right, or something like that.
I'm glad you now see the greatness that is Akechi. This is why there's more better Akechi fic out there now (aka. some dripping in derision and rage etc, which did exist a liiiiittle bit before Royal but mostly not) though of course as with any character there's loads of massively OOC stuff out there too.
I love how angry Akechi is at the idea that you might actually choose to save him.
