just makes me want fanfiction where he succeeds, the plane lands safely in Los Angeles, but the passengers are plagued by half-memories they don't understand from the erased crash timeline

My thought was that this sounds like Final Destination except the characters get destroyed psychologically instead of physically, but maybe you didn't have such a high level of angst in mind. :)
