Tell Me That Scowl Means You've Got Good News.

My brothers and sisters-in-law clubbed together to get me Final Fantasy XVI for my birthday, so I'm going to get to discover what everyone's talking about!

I've just obtained Garuda. I'm including the couple of notes I made about the demo, so this entry has my impressions from the start.

From the first hour or so, my main impression is 'interesting worldbuilding, generic characters'. Hopefully I'll warm to the characters; it's early days yet. I think the one I like most so far might be Clive's dad.

I'm warming to this game a little more now that Clive's been given very personal, character-focused motivations! Enjoyed him having very intense feelings about Joshua (although that was also pretty painful); enjoyed him turning against his enslaver to protect Jill.

Kenneth the Kitchen Head is definitely flirting with Clive.

Clive seems quietly very confused that everyone at the hideaway is being nice to him, and it's a character detail I enjoy.

I've equipped the Ring of Timely Strikes, and this was the correct decision. I tend to get overwhelmed quickly when battle systems require more buttons than 'attack', 'dodge' and 'heal', so I'm glad there's a 'just hammer the attack button and the game will decide the best moves for you' mode.

I'm stroking Torgal after every fight. He's a good boy.

Benedikta is the only character whose design doesn't bore me to tears. It's disappointing to play a Final Fantasy game where the characters don't all look absolutely ludicrous.

The woodcutter tells Clive, 'And here I thought you were in bed with Cid,' and I'd be very interested to know how literally he means it. I get the distinct sense that Cid is fuckbuddies with everyone he knows. Definitely fuckbuddies with Gav, definitely fuckbuddies with Quinten. Possibly no longer fuckbuddies with Benedikta, but there's a history there.

Going by the look Cid and Clive share when Gav departs after the Benedikta fight, Clive is absolutely going to make Cid's fuckbuddy list, as if there were any doubt.

Clive: Someone is calling me.
Cid: Damn it, lad, that doesn't mean you have to listen!

The characters in general haven't really made a big impact on me so far, but I'm enjoying Cid.

I was concerned from the marketing that this game's tone would be too serious to feel like a Final Fantasy. I'm pleased to note that it has a touch of playfulness to it.

Even if the characters aren't as memorable for me as they are in most Final Fantasy titles (so far, at least), I'm finding this game engaging and I'm looking forward to playing more!

I don't see myself getting fannishly into Final Fantasy XVI. But the last thing I thought that about was The Quarry, immediately before writing 13,000 words of fanfiction in the space of a fortnight, so it's clear that I know absolutely nothing about myself.
