It's hard for me to give recommendations, because I'd describe my taste as 'highly questionable' at best! But here's some anime I both love and think is genuinely excellent:
- Your Name, my absolute favourite film of all time, in which a boy in Tokyo and a girl in a country town start swapping bodies. - Erased, a twelve-episode anime about a man going back into his childhood body and trying to prevent the abduction and murder of a classmate. (As you might guess from the premise, this one is pretty dark, but, hey, you enjoyed Higurashi!) - Puella Magi Madoka Magica, a twelve-episode anime with a dark and intense take on magical girls.
