Look At Me! I'm A Meat Bun!

I've finished Master Detective Archives: Rain Code!

Due to Joy-Con drift, I ran Yuma into the zombies and got him eaten about five times in a row. I'm sorry, Yuma. It wasn't just because I enjoy hearing you scream in pain and terror.

(I was not at all expecting zombies. What a weird genre shift!)

Wait, holy shit, I was wondering why the blood that gets scythed out of Yuma is red when the blood of everyone else we see is Danganronpa pink! Are you telling me there's an actual plot reason for that?

Extremely cute that Yuma takes Shinigami's hand to walk into the final Mystery Labyrinth. There's so much delightful handholding in this game!

I am loving getting to fight against another version of Yuma. I hope we get to make out with ourselves.

I cannot fucking believe the pink blood is a plot point. 'Let's include, as a clue that these people aren't quite human, a detail that's clearly inhuman at a glance, but that the players will just accept because we assume they've played our previous game in which it's normal' is an incredibly bold move.

Oh, it's interesting to see a character follow the line of logic from 'I have to kill these criminals for the greater good' to 'looks like it's time for me to die for the greater good, so I suppose I have to accept that'.

This 'destroy the Mystery Labyrinth' versus 'stay in the Mystery Labyrinth' choice is VERY STRESSFUL, but I suppose I'll choose the option that makes it more likely we'll get to make out with our double. I do love characters being stranded and isolated together!

Oh, boo, we don't end up getting stranded with either Makoto or Shinigami. (Might be scope for fanfiction there?) And we lose our memories of Shinigami, which is a terrible development! Although the kiss on the cheek was cute.

This ending is focusing a little too much on Kurumi/Yuma for my liking, when Kurumi is pretty much the only character in the game I don't feel Yuma has chemistry with.

Interesting that Kurumi ends up with the book, though! I wonder whether she might end as the protagonist of a potential sequel, being haunted by Shinigami. Kurumi definitely feels suited to be the protagonist of a Kodaka game; like Yuma or the assorted Danganronpa protagonists, she's a relatively grounded character who could potentially contrast well with a larger-than-life cast. (This might be why Kurumi/Yuma doesn't entirely work for me; they're both fairly grounded, whereas Yuma feels designed to spark better off characters who are absolutely ridiculous.)

And that's Master Detective Archives: Rain Code! What a weird game. I've had a great time, and I'll definitely be there if it ever gets a sequel.
