For IX, it’s practically been years since I last picked it up so I don’t remember what my original party compositions were, but I was biased towards magic users so I’d bring them to every boss battle.
I always benched Quistis in VIII. I hated grinding in VIII for some reason, so I never saw a use for her. This is why I never managed to reach the endgame without being severely underleveled… oops. Rinoa, Irvine and Selphy were my most used party members.
I feel the same with XII. I switch out members (and play around with gambits. god this was so revolutionary for it’s time!) constantly for whatever’s convenient at the present circumstances (Characters with Steal or Poach if I’m grinding, White mages for access to Regen, ranged fighters against flying enemies etc etc.) but I always try to put Ashe in the lead even if it’s not the most optimal choice— she’s a favorite of mine!
