Let Me Give You My Life.
A new prompt post has just opened up on
threesentenceficathon, so here's another roundup of my fills! I'm pleasantly surprised to have written so much for the event this year.
I actually managed to keep to three sentences for one of these, and I demand a medal for my restraint.
Outer Wilds, protagonist, 70 words. First posted here, in response to the prompt 'if I stop moving I'll drown'.
The world has opened up and narrowed down in the same instant: you have your ship, you can go anywhere you choose, but only in this one small slice of now. Oceans and deserts and ruins, planets cracked and crumbling: there’s so much to see, and so, so little time. If you keep moving, if everything you see is new, maybe you can trick yourself into believing you aren’t trapped here.
The Last of Us Part II, Ellie and Jesse, 37 words. First posted here, in response to the prompt “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.” “Oh, I’m gonna need more than two.”
“There’s an old world saying,” Jesse says. “If you’re seeking revenge, dig two graves.”
“I’ve got a saying, too,” Ellie says. Breathing hard, blood spattered up her arms. “If I’m seeking revenge, you’d better dig two hundred.”
Spider-Man 2 (Insomniac games), Peter/MJ, 200 words. First posted here, in response to the prompt 'to love somebody is to know when to let them go'.
“Those things you said,” Peter says.
“I didn’t mean them,” MJ says, instantly. “It was the symbiote, I – I wouldn’t—”
“You meant them,” Peter says. “And you’re right.” He half-shrugs with one shoulder, lets out a small laugh. It rattles painfully in his chest. “I’m sorry. There’s been a lot going on. But that’s – that’s no excuse for neglecting what you need.”
“There’s always a lot going on,” MJ says. “It’s New York. And I can’t resent you for it. I mean, you’re saving lives.”
Definitely sounded a lot like she could resent him for it when she was yelling all those things and lashing him with her weird symbiote tentacles. It probably wouldn’t help to say that.
“Your life’s important too.” His eyes stray to the wreckage their fight left strewn behind. “Even when it’s not, y’know, actively in danger. I don’t want to hold you back.”
“I love you, Peter,” MJ says, quietly.
“I love you too.” Peter reaches out to run a hand through her hair, brushing it behind her ear. He doesn’t want to say this; he wants to kiss her and pretend they can get past this. “Maybe that’s not enough for us.”
Danganronpa 2, Hinata and Komaeda, 300 words. First posted here, in response to the prompt 'the Hozier song is the summary, not the title'; the specific song I had in mind was 'Take Me to Church'.
“I’m not going to kill you,” Hinata says.
“I know it’s more than I deserve,” Komaeda says. “But I thought I might be fortunate enough—”
“It’s not about what you deserve. I’m not going to kill anyone.”
He wishes Komaeda would stand up. It feels so weird to have someone kneeling in front of him, offering themselves to him. He’s afraid that one of the others will see them and get the wrong idea.
Not that the right idea is great, either.
Komaeda raises his head to beam at him. “Ah, that determination, that hope! It’s beautiful. I’m honoured that you’d allow me to see it.”
“Just...” Hinata winces, rubs a hand against his temple. He wants to close his eyes. But it feels dangerous. “Just shut the fuck up, Komaeda.”
“You’re sure you won’t kill me?” Komaeda asks, tilting his head to one side. “I’d like to be certain, before I offer this opportunity to anyone else. You could escape this place.”
Hinata tries to answer and finds his throat suddenly bricked up.
He could escape this place. If he takes Komaeda up on his offer, if he makes it through the trial undetected—
He doesn’t want to hurt anyone. But he can’t stay here either, losing sleep on these oppressive islands, knowing it’s only a matter of time until the next body shows up.
“It’d be an honour to die at the hands of any of my talented classmates, of course,” Komaeda is saying, “but I particularly hoped it would be you.”
If Komaeda is planning to bring the same offer to the others, how long will it be before his corpse shows up, whether Hinata is responsible or not?
He can’t think about this. But he might never have a better opportunity to get out of here.
Hinata tries to breathe properly, staring down at Komaeda: on his knees in the sand, his smile placid and unbearable. He can feel himself shaking.
I also posted this response to the prompt 'Romeo and Juliet, add one "fuck" to the canon dialogue or scene of your choice':
JULIET: Go ask his name. If he be marrièd,
My grave is like to be my wedding bed.
NURSE: (returning) His name is Romeo, and a Montague,
The only son of your great enemy.
JULIET: Fuck.
