It's just as well I found the fandom intimidatingly large and never really immersed myself in it, which made it easier to take a step back when the canon gained unfortunate associations; I can imagine it was a lot harder for people who'd built communities and friendships in the Harry Potter fandom.
Oh, definitely. I loved the books, but never really got all that fannish about them for the most part. I definitely don't judge people who are still involved, for the most part. It was such a big part of so many people's lives, I have a fair few LGBT friends who absolutely adored it, that it really sucks that the author went off the deep end.
