We Think The Women Should Be Allowed To Fight.

A while ago, [livejournal.com profile] misscam posted an entry about the hard time female characters get in fandom and invited everyone to talk about female characters they loved in the comments. I thought that this was a lovely idea, and so I am completely stealing it. Because I do tend to talk about male characters far more than I talk about female ones, and that's not right. There are plenty of female characters I adore. Here are some of them.

I love the women of House. I love poor adorable Cameron and her tendency to become attached to patients and her emotional masochism. I love longsuffering, sarcastic, awesome Cuddy. I LOVE THE BUDDY COP DUO THAT CAMERON AND CUDDY HAVE FORMED IN MY MIND. I love Thirteen when she is vulnerable and when she has that ridiculously cute grin or that little smile and when she is rolling her eyes and when she is going 'THESE ARE NOT THE CORRECT DRUGS; THEY ARE INSUFFICIENTLY CRAP' and when she is saying words and when she is on the screen.

I love Donna of Doctor Who. I love that she could so easily have been a shallow, exaggerated comic character, but that the writers instead took her and made something wonderful. I love that she made me emotionally invested in Doctor Who again; I cared about what happened to her, which was something I hadn't felt about any Doctor Who character (with the possible exception of the Master) since Eccleston's regeneration. I love that she will stand up to the Doctor, and she won't take 'I AM A TIME LORD AND THEREFORE MORALLY SUPERIOR' for an answer. She is compassionate and awesome and ridiculous and amazing and I adore her.

I love Toph of Avatar. She is mocking and hilarious and kicks arse, and the way she uses Earthbending to see is utterly fascinating. Katara, meanwhile, is lovely and awesome in equal measures, and Ty Lee is just the most adorable antagonist ever, bless her. I also love the fact that Toph and Katara both have very real flaws, and that these flaws in no way stop them from being wonderful.

I love Annie of Being Human, because she is adorable. I love her inept attempts to conform to the cultural image of what a ghost should be like. I love that she wants to be in Hufflepuff and make glittery cards. I love the little things she does for Owen, and her little smile when he notices them (even if he does not deserve them. Why don't you adorably haunt my house, Annie?). I love her friendship with Mitchell and George, and the ridiculous amounts of chemistry they all have.

These certainly aren't all the female characters I love (Carla, Elliot, Tosh, Sharpay, Fran, Celes, Selphie, Quistis, Freya, Yuna, Rikku, Lulu, Paine, Larxene, Ruby, Bela, Pamela, Ellen, Gwen, Morgana, Rose Tyler, Alex Drake, Samantha Carter, Luna Lovegood, Sara Tancredi...), but it's a start. Who are your favourite female characters? I'd love to hear about why you love them in the comments.

Whoniverse ladies

Doctor Martha Jones, who saved the flipping world and managed to get out of co-dependancy with the Doctor.

River Song! She's an older lady who is forward and sexual and confident, and that's so damn rare to see in a positive light. Also, I ship her and The Doctor so hard.

Barbara Wright, for being as epically badass as Donna in the very first seasons of Old School Who. Seriously, she's a teacher and she stands up to the Doctor with so much grace and style <3 If anyone says to me that the old school companions were screaming wimps, I will laugh in their face. (Not that there's anything wrong with screaming!).

Liz Shaw, who was a Third doctor companion and a competent, professional scientist, which can still be a rare thing to see.

Sarah-Jane Smith and every girl or woman on the Sarah-Jane Adventures. Even the evil ones. (WHY ARE YOU NOT WATCHING IT? SJA >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> NEW WHO > TIMES INFINITY TORCHWOOD).

Non-Who tv ladies

Jadzia Dax and Kira Nerys in Star Trek:Deep Space Nine. One's a science officer with a symbiont containing the memories of eight previous lives inside her, the other's a security officer who fought against the occupation of her home planet for most of her life. I've loved them both for half my life.

AERYN MOTHERFUCKING SUN from Farscape. Actually, most of the ladies from that show- Chianna, Z'haal, and a few I can't remember.

Leela from Futurama, because EPIC AWESOME. And I want her hair.

Buffy! I don't like Whedon that much these days, and I never really liked his dialoge style, but she is glorious and messed up and incredible.

Annie Cartwright from LOM! I was talking with a female police officer once, and we agreed that she'd have worked her way up to department head (I forget the police names for such things). It takes a lot of skill and grace to be in her job at that time. Also, she looked fierce whipping that swinger when undercover >:)

Olive, Vivian, Lily and Chuck from Pushing Daisies. I need to watch the last three episodes ;_;

Wendy Watson from The Middleman! She is incredible and geeky and latina and all of these things are just a part of her character- there's no ~special episode~ looking at them, Wendy just comes home and settles in front of her XBox or slips into Spanish when on the phone with her mum.

KATARA AND TOPH AND TY-LEE AND ALL THE FEMALE CHARACTERS OF AVATAR <33

And books/manga!

Lyra and Mrs Coulter from His Dark Materials.

THE WHOLE FEMALE CAST OF FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST. EVEN THE EVIL ONES.

DITTO FOR THE CLAYMORE MANGA.

Luna Lovegood! She is lovely and wise and strange and more than a little mad and I wish I was her.

Kel from Tamora Pierce's Tortall series! She's the second female trainee knight in the kingdom for the past hundred years, and the first to do it as a girl. Also she's one of Ms Pierce's few non-magical lead characters, which makes her extra badass >:)

The female characters of the Discworld books that I've read. Sadly not enough :(

Elizabeth Bennet, Elinor Dashwood and Anne Eliot. I have a never-ending love of Jane Austen.

All the ladies in The No 1. Ladies Detective Agency! And there are a lot of them.

I'm sure I've forgotton half of the ladies I love, but that's probably enough for now \o/

I WANT TO SECOND SARAH-JANE! AND MARIA! AND RANI! And the bit about how SJA is MILES better than Torchwood. Doctor Who-wise, Leela as well.

As for Jane Austen, I also love Catherine from Northanger Abbey. She is SO adorable and has some great moments with Henry and lets the Gothic books influence her thinking WAY too much and she is naive but I love her <3.

LIZ! YES! Because she didn't take shit from anybody. (And is totally part of the reason I'm studying physics, so...)

And Barbara was seriously amazing.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency! Oh, yes. I've only seen the pilot (and have not read the books) but Precious and Mma Makutsi win.
