Trying To Make His Way Home.
I am now up to the penultimate episode in the first series of Waterloo Road, and I actually really 'ship Tom/Izzie, even though Tom mistreats Lorna dreadfully because of it. TOM, STOP BEING A TERRIBLE PERSON. I mean, I know you will stop being a terrible person in later series, but your early terrible-personings are still saddening to watch.
And yet I have to wonder whether Tom/Izzie would appeal to me so much if it didn't have the undercurrent of betrayal. All right, Tom, you're allowed to be a bit of a terrible person.
(I so often fall for the unrequited pairings, the pairings that can never be, the pairings that can be but only if the participants can set aside the nagging of their consciences. Canonical pairings often don't interest me, but bringing in a sense of 'we shouldn't be doing this' is always going to make me sit up and take notice. Tom kisses another woman at his wedding reception. That's pretty hot.)
Meanwhile, the most recent episode of Glee ('Grilled Cheesus') brought me to the verge of tears several times. Thoughts:
- Puck, I have been ungenerous to you in the past, but you're okay. Let's shake hands and make up, if not yet out.
- I can no longer 'ship Finn/Kurt! When did that happen? I'm finding myself hoping that they develop a sort of siblingish relationship instead.
- In fact, I don't really 'ship anything in Glee at the moment; all I want is masses of adorable Kurt/Mercedes/Quinn friendship. And, all right, I 'ship Kurt with Josh Stevenson, but as Josh is from a different programme altogether I'm not sure that counts.
- I like that Kurt was allowed to retain his atheism. His storyline could have been about learning to believe, which would have bothered me, but no; it was about learning to accept that his religious friends meant well in their prayers. I'm all for that. His final speech to his father, about how his relationships with the people he loves are what he holds sacred and believes in - and I'm crying just thinking about it - comes very close to my own feelings.
- Kurt needs so many hugs. So many.
- I'm astonished that they managed to find a Young Kurt actor who looked so like Kurt! There's more than one person in the world who looks like Chris Colfer; who knew?
SPECULATION ON THE PAIRING UP OF GLEE CHARACTERS WITH WATERLOO ROAD CHARACTERS BASED SOLELY ON THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE THE SAME NAME:
- Rachel Mason/Rachel Berry: wouldn't ever happen. Mason isn't going to jeopardise everything by having a relationship with a student; what do you take her for?
- Finn Sharkey/Finn Hudson: wouldn't ever happen because neither would contemplate having a relationship with a dude. In an AU in which Sharkey is bisexual, he backs Hudson into a corner and snogs him. Hudson is totally confused. Sharkey is confused by his confusion. He's Finn Sharkey; how can you not want him? Yeah, this one isn't going to work either.
- Sam Kelly/Sam Evans: we don't know much about Evans yet, but I have a feeling that this could actually be really cute. THEY HAVE THE SAME FIRST NAME (well, all right, Evans' full first name is unlikely to be 'Sambuca', but they go by the same name); THEY'RE BOTH BLONDE; OBVIOUSLY THEY ARE MADE FOR EACH OTHER.
Well, that was a fairly unsuccessful line of thought.
