You Know, You Don't Have To Hit Every Fence.
I completed Uncharted 4 a few days ago!
Uncharted 4 is a gorgeous, gorgeous game, and it has some great Nate-and-Elena moments (which is the most important thing in an Uncharted game), but I do have a couple of complaints.
Firstly, melee combat isn't nearly as good as it is in 3, which I'm sad about. It's no fun when you can't counter your opponent's punches! The improved stealth does a bit to mitigate this, but I miss punching everyone up in the middle of a gunfight. On the whole, though, the amount of combat seems to have been cut down, which I'm pleased about; I've never been particularly fond of the shooty bits.
Secondly, and more significantly: Sam. There's nothing wrong with him, but this is the end of a journey I've taken with these characters I've learnt to love. I want a final adventure with Nate and Elena and Sully and Chloe. I don't want this Sam guy muscling in on it, particularly when I'm being told 'oh, but actually this Sam guy was part of the narrative ALL ALONG'.
I think this is the first time I've wanted a canon to have less of a sibling relationship. (And I'm so sad that Chloe wasn't in this game at all. There was a letter from her in Nate's attic, but it wasn't enough!)
Still, I'm certainly not saying I didn't enjoy myself! This felt like an Uncharted game the moment I climbed a crumbling prison tower and Nate talked to himself the entire way up. Bless him. I'd forgotten how endearing I found his talking-to-himself habit.
And then I hit the Crash Bandicoot bit, which I think is one of the finest gaming moments I've ever experienced. I was so bad and Elena mocked me so much and it was great. I would play an entire Nate and Elena relationship simulator.
(I made such noises when I discovered their wedding album.)
Other things I loved: the end of Nadine's story. Nate cooing over the lemur in the market, and then doodling little lemurs all over his journal. Elena showing up to join the adventure late in the game, which I was ecstatic about because I'd been worried I'd never get to team up with her. Nate staggering around in horrible pain, that grand Uncharted tradition. I also found the adventure storyline (the Henry Avery plot) a lot more interesting than the adventure storylines of previous Uncharted games, even if the interpersonal storyline had too much Sam for my taste.
And I'm incredibly relieved that both Nate and Elena survived. I'd have been so upset if either of them had been killed off. (I'd also have been upset if Sully had died, but Nate and Elena were the ones I was really worried about. Sully has fake-died so many times I feel I've already done my mourning for him, at least.)
Also pretty great: if you kill a thousand guys, you get a trophy called 'Ludonarrative Dissonance'.
I'm convinced that Sam and Sully are married by the epilogue. Something about Sully's letter and Cassie's 'Sam and Sully are coming to visit!' immediately made me feel they were a couple. This... probably wasn't the impression I was supposed to come away with. It's more likely that Sam and Sully are just off having more treasure-hunting adventures. Too bad; they're married in my head.
If they start a new Uncharted series with Sam as the protagonist, I'm going to be so pissed off. I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU, SAM. (A new series with Cassie as the protagonist, occasionally dropping in on Uncle Sam and Uncle Sully, who are definitely married, I'd be up for.)
Incredible revelation: they named the dog Vicky after Sully.
I was pretty unhappy, five days after someone broke into our house by climbing through an open upstairs window at the back, to find myself playing a sequence in Uncharted 4 where Nate breaks into a house by climbing through an open upstairs window at the back. Don't break into people's houses, Nate! It's wrong!

That sounds genuinely charming.
I was so bad and Elena mocked me so much and it was great.
So she mocks you in a way that is really nice somehow?
Nate cooing over the lemur in the market, and then doodling little lemurs all over his journal.
YOU NEED TO BUILD SOME SORT OF GAME-TO-TV-CONVERTER SO I CAN SEE THIS RIGHT NOW!
