I Remembered Black Skies, The Lightning All Around Me.

I was thinking, 'Hmm, maybe I should get into a routine of doing a painting every Saturday,' and then I did a painting today because I didn't have the patience to wait until the weekend. help help I can't stop painting

Today's subject is Life Is Strange. To my credit, I did three entire paintings before trying to reproduce a videogame screenshot.









I tried to work a bit of blue into the sky and the sea, but there's absolutely no sign of it. I suspect I should have used the dark blue, rather than the light. Never mind.

Slightly concerned to realised that my sad little trees in this storm look much the same as my happy little trees in Bob Ross landscapes. I really need to step up my tree game.

I'm so confused by the fact that this is apparently a hobby of mine now! I've never done any form of visual art, unless you count 'editing Pokémon into Supernatural screenshots'. What other things do I not realise I'd love because I've never tried them? Show jumping? Boiler repair?

What was the name of the blue you used?

Blue aside, that turned out very well. Considering this is your fourth painting, and you've never been into any visual arts, I was expecting something that looked like an obvious beginner, but I'm impressed! The cliff, the lighthouse, the sea, the sky, all great!

(Also slightly jealous, because you're about as good at painting as I am now.)

I mixed in a bit of Light Blue Permanent, but I think I should have tried to use the... okay, I just checked the name of my other blue and now I'm very puzzled. I think I should have tried to use the perplexingly named Ultramarine Blue (Red Shade).

Thank you so much! I can almost guarantee it'd be a disaster if I tried to paint anything other than landscapes, at least.

Yeah, ultramarine would have showed up a lot more. (That red shade thing is confusing. It's whether the blue is slightly more purplish or more greenish, but it's massively counterintuitive.)

Landscapes are hard! I cannot get the hang of them. Maybe I should try Bob Ross?

I've been enjoying your painting posts (and your self-deprecating commentaries, though they undersell what you've achieved) and am particularly impressed by this one! The mood is great, and I love seeing the blues translated into sepias.

Thank you so much! (My efforts have definitely turned out better than I was expecting, but I don't want to get too confident, because I remember how bad I was at judging my own ability when I first started writing!)

If I squint hard I can kind of see an extremely pale blue, but I don't think I would have noticed it without reading about it first. Also your tiny people silhouettes are quite very good, they all look like they have motion and actual balance and ...proportions. And things.

Also those are some excellent Bob Ross waves crashing against that cliff.

To be honest, the first thing I did, once I had the picture on my computer, was experimentally turn the saturation all the way up to see whether any blue was actually lurking in there. There is no blue to be found, alas.

This one turned out really fantastic! I really like the different colors of levels of the building, and the rain is great.

I was pretty nervous about the rain, because obviously it was the last thing I had to do, so I was sitting there going, '...okay, I've spent two hours on this painting, it looks complete, time to PAINT DIAGONAL LINES OVER EVERYTHING and desperately hope it doesn't ruin the whole thing.'

I think you've captured the scene very well. And who knows whether a tree is happy or sad? Perhaps those trees are exhilarated by the storm!

I love what you did with the sea in particular. That's such a stark part of the game, and the tension in your sea is beautiful.

Thank you so much! With the sea, I went, 'Can I just squiggle some white on there and then smudge it until it looks right? Would that... work?' and was very excited when it did, in fact, work.

And hello! I think this might be the first time we've actually spoken, although we've been following each other for a little while. It seems strange to say 'it's nice to meet you' when I've been reading your journal for the last year, but I'll say it regardless: it's nice to meet you!
