Ferocious Competition For The 'Worst Title' Crown.
I'm going to do the same self-indulgent end-of-year fic meme I did last year!
Number of fics written: thirty-one. You can find them on my AO3 account:
Riona.
Fandoms: Forgotton Anne, Life Is Strange, Life Is Strange 2, The Last of Us, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy XV, Danganronpa, Danganronpa 2, Danganronpa V3, Animorphs, Zanki Zero, Higurashi: When They Cry, Undertale (
zarla's Handplates AU), Scrubs, Detroit: Become Human, Your Turn to Die, Man of Medan, The Book of Mormon, The Politician, The Good Place. Fifteen videogame fandoms, three television fandoms, one stage fandom, one book fandom. The fandom in which I've written the most this year is Life Is Strange 2, with five fics.
Six crossovers or crossover-adjacent fics: Life Is Strange 2/The Last of Us, Danganronpa/Danganronpa 2, an Animorphs/The Hunger Games fusion, a Scrubs fic inspired by Chaos Walking, a Final Fantasy XV fic inspired by Queer Eye (?????), and a Life Is Strange/Life Is Strange 2 fic inspired by Your Name.
Best title: I think Double Exposure (Life Is Strange/Life Is Strange 2) works pretty well for a story about two people swapping bodies, one of whom is a photographer.
Worst title: Nagito Komaeda Gets Under Everyone's Skin and/or Clothes (Danganronpa/Danganronpa 2) is pretty bad, but I think Until Death Don't Us Part (Detroit: Become Human) may actually be worse.
Best first line: There’s a handgun in the medical office, just sitting there among the supplies. Gauze, cotton balls, antiseptic, gun. (Across the Line, Your Turn to Die)
Worst first line: “Guess the second Main Game’ll be starting up again sooner or later,” Keiji says. “You think it’ll be the same thing? Might make things simpler if you and your friendly policeman tell each other their roles in advance.” (Grounded, Your Turn to Die) - this isn't a very gripping opening, I'll be honest.
Best last line: Elder McKinley pulls away at last, breathless, and smiles. “I’ll see you in Hell.” (See Where You Belong, The Book of Mormon) - I was so delighted when I realised I could finish this fic with a stupid punchline.
Worst last line: She and Mion shift closer, and the three of them curl into each other, holding each other by the side of the road, until Keiichi starts to feel like he can breathe again. (Echoes, Higurashi: When They Cry) - it's slightly too long, I think.
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
More, I think! Around 77,000 words. That's about 10,000 less than last year, but last year was unusually productive, so I was expecting a bigger drop.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
Did I seriously write two fics for The Book of Mormon? I've never written anything for a stage production before, and, before I saw it, I'd never have guessed a comedic religious musical by the creators of South Park might be fanfiction material. I just love Elder Price so much! What a great well-meaning, self-obsessed teenage disaster!
I was also surprised to write for Scrubs again, after a break of thirteen years.
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
I had a great time with See Where You Belong (The Book of Mormon). 'The characters' guilt-induced shared dreams of Hell' is basically the perfect setting for a fic.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
It's between Cause and Effect (The Last of Us Part II, in which Ellie comes out to Joel) and False Reset (Undertale,
zarla's Handplates AU, in which Gaster travels back in time, sort of). Given that one of these is based on a trailer and the other is based on a fancomic, I was expecting them both to be pretty niche and was surprised by how many people read them!
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
Nothing got under ten kudos this year, even though I wrote in some obscure and old fandoms, so I can't really complain!
Story that could have been better?
Until Death Don't Us Part (Detroit: Become Human) didn't really explore the darkness of the 'you're a dead person's memories stored in the body of your android friend' concept to its full potential, I feel.
Sexiest story?
I MEAN I GUESS IT'S THE STORY ABOUT THE COCKBLOCKING WAX STATUE (Crowded, Danganronpa V3). I'm not very good at sexy.
Saddest story?
Astray (Life Is Strange 2), in which nine-year-old Daniel thinks he accidentally killed his brother. I write a lot of misery, but not usually with such young characters, and I did feel slightly bad about it. Poor Daniel.
Most fun?
Crowded (Danganronpa V3), probably, in which Kokichi tempts Shuichi into his room and the moment is ruined by the life-sized wax statue of their dead classmate Kokichi canonically has suspended above his bed. I wrote this fic to cheer myself up. It helped.
Story with single sweetest moment?
I suppose Elder Cunningham rewriting their holy book to make Elder Price feel better about his crush on God (Being Seen, The Book of Mormon) was sort of sweet?
Most fucked-up story?
This wasn't in the original questionnaire, but I've decided to add it! It's Across the Line (Your Turn to Die), in which a seventeen-year-old girl shoots a man dead and then has traumatised, blood-covered sexual tension with a guy in his twenties. The fandom was full of 'you can't write that, it's morally wrong' discourse, which just made me want to write something as horrible as possible, because I'm contrary.
Hardest story to write?
Double Exposure, my Life Is Strange/Life Is Strange 2 AU based on Your Name. I'm pleased with it, but I had to try to keep track of the main characters in different times and how canon events would change based on their bodyswapping. It was tricky!
Easiest/most fun story to write?
I Try to Discover, my JD/Cox Scrubs fic in which most of the characters are constantly, uncontrollably broadcasting their thoughts for all to hear. It was a blast to work on, even if it gets Erasure stuck in my head every time I think about it.
Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?
Kairi's characterisation in Kingdom Hearts has always seemed a bit thin to me, so it was interesting to try to dig into her a bit in No Holding Back (Kingdom Hearts III).
Most overdue story?
Tenancy Agreement (Scrubs). Clearly I should have written JD/Turk/Carla back in my teens. I'm glad I got there at last.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I posted Double Exposure (Life Is Strange/Life Is Strange 2) in chapters, without having finished it first! I never do this, because I'm so unreliable at finishing things! But I managed it! Maybe I can trust myself to embark on WIPs now? I'll be honest: I probably can't.
What are your fic writing goals for next year?
Just as with every year, my goal is just 'write stuff, have fun'.
I may have omitted a couple of fics for ~mysterious reasons~. (EDIT: Following Yuletide reveals, I've added The Politician and The Good Place to the list of fandoms!)

I love so much that this is the sweetest moment you could think of for this meme. I mean, it is genuinely touching! But somehow I feel like it goes well with the fact that you went on to add a question about which fic was most fucked up.
