I'm so glad Persona 5 Royal explained the logic behind negotiations. I no longer have to rely on a guide for all the answers! (One of the biggest issues with the Persona games is that they rely too heavily on trial and error. I don't think there's any other game series that sends me running to guides so often.)

Hey, Naoto got mentioned on the television! It's nice to have this reminder that we're still in the same universe as the other games. I wonder what Yosuke's doing right now.

I'm pleased to note they've changed Ryuji's portrait when he tells me, 'It's cute hearin' that from someone like you,' so now he looks happy rather than uncomfortable. Embrace how cute I am, Ryuji.

Ryuji's response to Maruki asking what he does in his free time: 'Uh, hang out with my buds, mostly - though I just started doin' that recently. Before that, I was just pissed all the time.' I'm so glad we could bring something positive into this angry teenager's life!

I laughed aloud at Ryuji responding to 'What do you want most out of life right now?' with 'Uh... I want somethin' to drink, I guess.'

Don't tell the student you're counselling that talking to him feels like talking to an old friend, Maruki.

I studied really hard and managed to get in the top ten in the first set of exams! TAKE THAT, EVERYONE WHO WROTE ME OFF AS A DELINQUENT. My favourite things I overheard when running around the school afterwards: 'It's kind of scary that a guy like that is also crazy smart,' 'Did he steal the test answers or something?' and 'He must have blackmailed them or something. How did he get those scores?'

Originally the bit about the exams went between them, but I moved it to the end because I thought it was a better way to close the entry; it hadn't occurred to me that that would result in a slightly weird juxtaposition! Whoops. (Honestly, though, it's... not unrepresentative of my taste in fiction.)

I'm glad that Persona 5 has any logic behind negotiations at all. I've recently finished playing the SMT: Nocturne Remaster (I'd played the original many years ago) and I was reminded of how random the recruitment mechanic is. You can't even find a decent guide: look at this for an example of how the system works: https://game8.co/games/Shin-Megami-Tensei-III-Nocturne/archives/332036 (My favourite bit is that despite the fact this is considered a guide it says things like Some demon races, like Wilder or Foul races, do not usually talk to the player unless certain conditions are met. and then does not specify what conditions those may be. xD

I've also picked up Persona 4 Golden last year, and Persona 5 Royal recently, and intend to play at some point when I have some time. I know the broad added plotpoints of both games, but not the minute detail, character interactions etc so that should be nice. (Though I'm curious to see the Golden additions as genuinely I feel that Teddie is not -that- bad in the original game*, but it sounds like there's a bunch of "hmm" content for Teddie and Yosuke that I'm sure must be Golden only (not to say that they both didn't have objectionable moments in the original game). I shall see!)

*Having said that, I'm pretty sure the whole reason I had Teddie in my party in Persona 4 was because he shouted BEARSONA! which I thought was hilarious, so this is the level of reasoning you were dealing with here: I'm a simple woman. Also his voice actor made me laugh, but they've been recast, so...

Did you ever watch Persona 4 Arena in the end, since you've started going into the spinoff territory?

Wow, yes, negotiation in Nocturne sounds... extremely frustrating.

I hope you enjoy your Persona acquisitions! I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts.

(I'll... I'll be honest: 'BEARSONA' is pretty good. And I've just listened to a comparison of the voice actors, and their performances sound very similar to me!)

I've watched a few Arena clips here and there, but I haven't actually sat down and watched the entire thing! I probably should. (Or at least the Yosuke scenes.)

Fun fact: I once had someone try to convince me that Akechi was a better friend and teammate to Akira than Ryuji. I'll leave that with you.

HMMM. I've always thought of 'never shoots me in the head with full intent to kill' as a fairly essential requirement of good friendship, but I suppose different people have different standards for this sort of thing.
