I think that's what made the show work, to be honest. As soon as that's resolved into a standard romance it becomes very dull.

I ducked out of The Mentalist when the two main characters got together, and the getting-together scene was cute and generic, and I went 'no? he's a torturer and a murderer and she reluctantly enables him? if you're going in the romance direction, I demand something dark and interesting.'
