I Can't Wait For The Wake.
More of The X-Files! We're a few episodes into season three.
'Humbug', the circus sideshow episode, was an episode in which I could very clearly see the DNA of Supernatural in this show. Occasionally Mulder will say a line I could easily imagine coming out of Dean Winchester's mouth, and it's always a little jarring.
'Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose' is also a very Supernatural episode. I can't believe it's canonical that Mulder is going to die by autoerotic asphyxiation. (Also fascinating: Scully asking Bruckman to tell her how she dies and getting the answer 'You don't.')
Of course, the DNA of Supernatural is also apparent in the weird, intense relationship between Mulder and Scully. I really enjoy their strange dynamic.
I'm predictably pleased by Mulder losing his mind in 'Anasazi'. I was somehow really shocked by the revelation that his water supply had been contaminated with LSD; I was expecting an alien-related explanation and wasn't prepared for something that could actually happen! Between that and the rapid ageing episode, I wouldn't be surprised if Mulder never drank water again.
I feel Mulder's been getting his nipples out a lot lately.
Mulder: Imagine if you could come back from the dead and take out five people who caused you to suffer. Who would they be?
Scully: I only get five?
Mulder: I remembered your birthday this year, didn't I, Scully?
It's hilarious that Mulder keeps going 'clearly the only possible explanation is [something completely ludicrous]' and he's always right. As Ginger says, he's lucky that he's in The X-Files; it's easy to envision him as a constantly incorrect character in a different show. (Scully's much less fortunate to be in The X-Files; in any other show, she'd be right.)
I'm trying to work out whether I ship Mulder and Scully. I think the version of their relationship I'm most interested in is probably 'a non-romantic relationship so intense and intimate it seems slightly weird that it isn't romantic'.
Neither Mulder nor Scully seems to have friends, really; there are people who are willing to help them, but there's no one they spend time with socially. Maybe that's part of the reason they're so weird about each other.
Finally, I've just realised I never actually mentioned why I made the decision to watch The X-Files for the first time. I'll be honest: it's because I had Bree Sharp's 'David Duchovny (Why Won’t You Love Me?)' stuck in my head. Turned out to be a pretty good decision!
(Incredible collection of nineties faces in that music video. I'm particularly fascinated by Brad Pitt apparently singing 'David Duchovny, I know you can love me' while in character as Tyler Durden.)

Still never seen the Fight Club film! For me, that book works on its narration; I'm not sure how well it'd translate to the screen for me.
I always get a bit lost in August as I have literally a month and no obligations or really anybody to talk to, so I tend to get particularly lost in a fannish haze since I don't really have an outlet, and live in my head to pass by the time and at least be doing something I enjoy. Therefore I've spent a lot of this Summer on an AI Somnium Files: Nirvana Initiative binge. One of my favourite LPers has also returned after a year hiatus and is playing DRV3 which is a delight as they are very much theory talkers therefore it is also possibly the slowest LP ever (13 hours in, the first victim just died). I've also been reading and rereading books, currently Max Barry's Lexicon which I'm reminded when I re-read it as interestingly philosophical about language, persusasion and bias as well as being a story about some very unfortunate people having a not very good time and possibly also being kidnapped.

I remember enjoying the Fight Club film (although it's been a long time since I saw it), but I did prefer the book; as you say, its narration is extremely strong.

Oh, wow, that's impressive!

That does sound intriguing, although I just checked out the first scene on Amazon's preview and immediately recoiled from the eye horror.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)If it makes you feel better, that first scene is pretty much the only specifically eye horror in the book - if you can get past that, you'd probably find it intriguing. Although that scene is very important. It is not a story without horror, though - but generally more psychological than physical.

Anasazi was the episode that got me hooked ont he show when it first came out!
I would so love Mulder not drinking plain water again.
Mulder would absolutely work as the constantly incorrect character on a different show! He could even get his nipples out!

(the fic has no real spoilers for XF, but makes more sense after you've seen "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose")
And I'd love to see your take on it the two of them meeting.

A real-world explanation!
I feel Mulder's been getting his nipples out a lot lately.
Good.
I think the version of their relationship I'm most interested in is probably 'a non-romantic relationship so intense and intimate it seems slightly weird that it isn't romantic'.
I think that's what made the show work, to be honest. As soon as that's resolved into a standard romance it becomes very dull.

Ah, I'm sorry to hear that! It seems like their romance should rightfully be fun and weird. I ducked out of The Mentalist when the two main characters got together, and the getting-together scene was cute and generic, and I went 'no? he's a torturer and a murderer and she reluctantly enables him? if you're going in the romance direction, I demand something dark and interesting.'

I forget, are you already past the episode where he wears the red speedo? (shame on me, forgetting which episode it was) Because I can't remember him getting his nips out that often, but that red speedo was one of the most important pieces of clothing of the entire 90's for us X-philes :D
Maybe that's part of the reason they're so weird about each other.
Yeah, I think that's definitely part of it. Scully does have a Life(tm) when she joins the X-Files, but even if those early moments she doesn't seem to fit in, and quite quickly there's just Mulder in her social circle (this is actually one of the reasons why I loved Character-Most-People-Hated in later seasons, because Scully finally got a friend again). The Mulder/Scully dynamic is so unique, even though it paved the way for all those other stoic woman/weirdo man procedural pairings, because they go from zero to 100 in their relationship in pretty much the first episode without any explicit romance.

They really do! It's absolutely fascinating. I still can't believe they'd been working together for one or two days before Scully stripped in front of him without explanation and Mulder went 'well, this seems normal'.
