I Love My Work.

I continue to want to do exactly two things: watch Person of Interest and talk about Person of Interest. The persons in it are just so interesting! I'm up to episode 2.13, 'Dead Reckoning'.

Reese is so delighted whenever he learns something new about Finch!

I love that the murder spouses actually managed to patch things up after both taking out hits on each other. Beautiful.

Incredible moment: Reese turning up to prevent a bank robbery, hearing the bank robbers out, going 'well, you make a compelling case' and then helping out with the bank robbery.

Reese and his CIA partner slamming each other into walls and pointing guns at each other and snarling into each other's faces and then making out: ALSO INCREDIBLE, holy crap. I don't know how I'm expected to finish this episode when I just keep rewinding to rewatch that scene.

(I was eventually able to keep watching the episode ('Prisoner's Dilemma'), but I genuinely did watch that scene five times before I managed it, and the main reason I'm specifying the episode name here is so it'll be easier for me to find that scene again.)

Agent Donnelly isn't so much an antagonist as the protagonist of a completely different show. Every one of his actions would be the actions of a hero in a detective show; there's no denying that Reese is a criminal and a danger. It's interesting to watch.

Reese looks pained when Carter calls him 'a good man'.

I'm often struck by the fact that Reese has absolutely no regard for his own safety. He'll fight tooth and nail to protect everyone else, but his own life is worth nothing; he's got nothing to lose.

But he's scared, when he's wearing the bomb vest. He pushes that away, focuses on keeping other people safe, keeping them away from him. But, when he finally allows Finch to try to help, he also allows himself to show that he's scared.

[personal profile] felis commented on the fact that Reese is always openly grateful for everything Finch has done for him, which is very true and very endearing. I called Reese 'secretly caring' in an earlier entry, but that's not really accurate; it didn't ring wholly true even as I was writing it.

At heart, Reese is a very straightforward person. He'll go undercover when he has to, but he doesn't enjoy it. It's easier for him to be clear about who he is: he knows you're in trouble, he's here to help, he's a dangerous man who's trying to do better, he's a guy who had nothing to live for until Finch saved him. If he doesn't like you, you'll know, although he'll still help out if you're in danger. If he likes you, you'll know that too; it might take a little longer to become clear, but that's more because he tends to be focused on practical matters than because he's actively hiding it.

I think the exception here is Fusco. Reese disliked him at first (which is probably fair, given the circumstances in which they met), and I think he continued to treat Fusco with hostility for a while even after starting to warm up to him, possibly because he himself hadn't really registered that he was warming up to Fusco. I'm glad they're on a better footing now!

Ha. Whereas I spent half an hour looking for it earlier this week, because I knew it had Reese murdering people and you were talking about that in one of your earlier posts - but then I obviously couldn't talk about it at the time, since you hadn't reached this episode yet.

I think "Dead Reckoning" was the point where so many people on my reading list were talking about the show that I started watching, too. :D The rooftop scene, man. <3 <3

Did you notice that Finch put Reese's clothes in Bear's dog basket while Reese was in prison?

Also, it was such a genius idea to have John's alias resemble his real life closely enough that he could talk truth during the interrogation, opening up to Carter while in prison of all places, and under heavy scrutiny. I loved that, and also the emphasis on choices and paths taken, both hers and Reese's, and how they don't make excuses for them.

And another little thing I loved during this mini-arc was the significance of the ear pieces: both Carter and John having to wear them against their will, given by Donnelly and Kara respectively - and the contrast of that with the one John usually wears to stay in constant contact with Finch. I loved the unwanted vs. wanted intimacy in this little detail, giving someone direct access to your own head.

But he's scared, when he's wearing the bomb vest.

Yeah. I mean, the question is still if he isn't just scared because Finch is going to die, too, but ... it's the bank robber episode at the start of this mini-arc where he actually says that he is happy (!!) and throughout prison and being confronted with Kara again, he realizes even more that maybe, he does have something to lose after all. Which of course doesn't mean that he won't keep disregarding his own safety to save other people; he still doesn't really count much in his own eyes, be he does have something to lose.

... ah, yes: "I woke up this morning and felt ... took me a while to put my finger on it ... but I felt happy. Must be this job." Contrast that with your post-titling "I love my work" from the flashback. Ha.

At heart, Reese is a very straightforward person.

That's true, you're right.

Also, I don't know if you like fanvids, but No Man's Woman by Giandujakiss was and still is one of my favourites - I adore that it casts Reese in the female role - and it doesn't have any spoilers beyond "Dead Reckoning". The contrast between Kara and Finch keeps on giving - she gave Reese his name and his murder skills, but now Finch is the one who guides Reese and has his faith.

Gun in the face angry kissing? Damn it, I need to watch the show faster! (I’m right at the one where Finch got tortured with needles.)

I have no context beyond this sentence but I agree with him. ;D

Hi! :D Higurashi is definitely my main fandom right now (and this is my default icon ♡), so if that's what you're interested in, you're likely to find a lot of it in my posts. :D
