There Is No After For People Like Us.
I've finished the fourth season of Person of Interest! Here are some notes on the last few episodes of series four.
Finch's confused 'congratulations?' when he sees Root in the wedding dress!
'Terra Incognita': Reese's response to 'what were you good at in the military?' is 'taking orders', and I just want to make a note of that because I feel it's an important aspect of his character.
Realising why Reese kept turning up the heating in the car hit me really hard.
'I've missed you' also gave me a palpable twinge in my heart. Talking to her as if she's really here! The line between reality and unreality, having experiences that you know aren't real but that still mean something to you: these are themes that really interest me, which is probably apparent from the fact that they crop up in half my fanfiction. (And then he asks his hallucination to stay with him!)
And getting confused over how much he really told Carter! And saying he wanted to tackle the case alone because it was a chance to be close to her again! And crying! This episode is devastating and I'm having a great time.
Riona: The episode I just watched was largely about my murder boyfriend hallucinating and crying while simultaneously bleeding and freezing to death.
Rei: Great! You must be loving this!
Tem: I am so happy for you.
Ginger: So that's, like, the perfect episode for you. Someone decided to make this show specifically for you, and they were probably very upset that you didn't watch it for so long.
It's nice to be known and accepted.
It's a bit of a shame we don't get to see the actual rescue, or how Reese's allies react to finding him half-dead. But I do like that the experience shakes him into expressing sincere appreciation for Fusco.
'YHWH': they've spent so much time on this gang war plotline! Are they seriously going to end it by killing off both gang leaders with an unknown sniper? Maybe they're going to follow through somehow, but right now the entire Dominic plotline largely feels like wasted screentime.
That said, I did like that Elias was clearly willing to sacrifice Fusco's life for his own escape. I'm glad Fusco survived the crash, but it's good to be reminded of Elias's ruthlessness. Elias is an asset to the protagonists in many ways, but he's also a crime boss who's ultimately out for himself. If they forget that, they do so at their cost.
Rei happened to be in the room for most of 'YHWH'. 'So Root clearly wants to fuck the Machine, right?' they asked. I'm glad that that's obvious even out of context. (Rei later commented, correctly, that Root should have kissed the briefcase containing the Machine.)
When the Machine started talking to Finch through the laptop, Rei cracked up laughing and started reading the Machine's lines in a comedic chirpy voice, which may have slightly impaired the intended effect. Still, it is an emotional conversation between a middle-aged man and a laptop that calls him 'father'; I can't blame anyone for finding that a bit silly!
I was thinking earlier in the episode, when both Reese and Root were in direct contact with the Machine, that it's a shame Finch doesn't get to talk to it directly any more. It's nice to see them communicate, however silly it may be.
Early in the show, I checked AO3 for Machine/Finch works and was disappointed that I couldn't find any. Now that I've seen more, I suppose that might be because the show frames Finch and the Machine as father and child, but I'm still disappointed by the shortage of man/supercomputer filial incest fanfiction. Come on, Person of Interest fandom! There's scope for interesting emotional conflict in Finch trying to cram their relationship into human familial roles that don't fit it, because the Machine isn't human.
There is, at least, plenty of Root/Machine fanfiction, as there should be.

SAME, 100%. Hallucinations, dreams, drug trips, anything in this vein = I'm in!
"This episode is devastating and I'm having a great time."
