rionaleonhart: final fantasy xiii: lightning pays intense attention to you. (speak carefully)

Whatever Hell He's Talked Himself Into.

In everything but the eikon battles, which are big on visual spectacle, Final Fantasy XVI feels like a toned-down Final Fantasy. The character designs, the characters' personalities, the body language, the environments: everything is more muted and more realistic than I tend to expect from the series.

I think the more realistic body language is very cool, but I have mixed feelings on everything else. I'll be honest: I've never picked up a Final Fantasy game because I'm in the mood for realism. That's not a problem with the game, exactly - there's nothing wrong with trying something new, especially in this series, which is famous for constantly reinventing itself - but it does cause Final Fantasy XVI to jar slightly with my expectations.

I'm in the mission 'Onward', looking for a trader's pass to cross a border.

Jesus, I was just doing sidequests; I didn't mean to start a war. Did the game hear my 'this feels toned-down' comments and decide to respond by escalating wildly?

Fascinated by this baker who's in love with the Mothercrystal. I thought 'does he kind of want to fuck the Mothercrystal? is that just in my head?' and then he started waxing lyrical about 'her inviting hollow' and, no, definitely not in my head.

Don't ask me to choose between Otto and Gav to accompany me! I'm not capable of making decisions!

I ended up going with Otto. I was mildly tempted by Gav because I know some people on my flist ship him and Clive, so I wanted to see whether they'd have any sexual tension, but, being forced to choose between them, I realised I personally like Otto slightly more.

Choosing between Tarja and Jill feels like a much less neutral decision! I'd like to get to know Tarja better, but I went with Jill; I'd really like to be more interested in Jill than I am, so I feel I should take every opportunity to learn more about her.

Clive's amused 'Are you all right?' when Jill is waxing lyrical about the goods at the market is very cute.

Was Otto in love with Cid? I choose to believe that Otto was in love with Cid.

Bombs... have bones?

I left off playing for a while, and then I had a long segment of just doing sidequests, so, by the time the visiting-Cid's-grave scene came along, I'd forgotten how pretty the fully animated cutscenes in this game were. They are extremely pretty.

Good to see best character Charon getting the full cutscene treatment, too!

'You've clearly got a fine head on those broad shoulders,' some guy giving me a quest says. Once again, literally everyone flirts with Clive.

I'd love to know more about the Fallen; we've heard so little about them! That's something I really liked about Final Fantasy X, come to think of it: the landscape was dotted with the ruins of a civilisation we really felt we knew, because we'd spent time there, however briefly.

Dion's father gently forcing him to kneel and tilting his chin up with the point of his cane was pretty hot. I'm sorry for saying it, but someone had to.

Eloise just gave me a crimson collar and told me to wear it, and frankly it is an outrage that it doesn't show up on Clive's character model.

Even if I think Final Fantasy XVI could afford to be a bit more ludicrous, I'm still enjoying my time with this game! From the trailers, I wasn't sure whether it would be my thing at all; I'm glad I gave it a chance, even if I don't imagine it'll end up ranking among my favourite Final Fantasy games.

I did this sidequest just today and I missed all these implications. I figured Dude was just, you know, religious.

Also, when doing Mid's fetch quests, I definitely found myself wondering if anyone would actually choose Tarja over Jill. To me, that would be like, I don't know— Max choosing Brooke over Chloe, or Noctis choosing Dino over Prompto, or Souji choosing [some fucking random P4 minor character; I don't fucking know] over Yosuke. (Yes, my examples are Riona-specific.)

Also, hi. It's five months later. I'm from the future.
