Fanfiction: Captured (Danganronpa 2, Hinata/Koizumi)

Has it really been almost four years since I last posted a Danganronpa fic? It's good to be back.

This fic is extremely self-indulgent and mixes elements from different translations, and I'm only slightly ashamed of myself.

Title: Captured
Fandom: Danganronpa 2
Rating: PG
Pairing: slight Hinata/Koizumi implications
Wordcount: 2,100
Summary: Look, I'll be honest: this whole fic is just a barely veiled excuse to make Hinata and Koizumi share a bed.

Monokuma summons everyone to the restaurant not long after Togami’s trial, after Hanamura’s execution. It feels like a bad idea to go, but it’s probably a worse one to stay away.

“Bad news!” Monokuma announces. “Super bad news! Unbearably bad news! Now that two of your classmates have met tragic ends, there aren’t enough beds to go around, so some of you bastards are going to have to share.”

Hinata lets out a quiet breath. It’s not great news, but he was braced for worse.

It takes his mind a moment to catch up. “Hold on. That’s not how numbers work. There should be more beds per person.”

More beds per person?” Monokuma exclaims. “You’re saying you want more than one bed? What, are you planning to sleep across two beds at once? Ridiculous and greedy, Hinata-kun.”

“I’m just saying there’s no reason anyone should have to share,” Hinata says. “We’ve all still got our own beds.”

Monokuma claps his paws together, and there’s a series of loud explosions from the vicinity of the cabins. Hinata jolts and looks over at them, wide-eyed.

Holy shit, that’s a lot of smoke.

“As I was saying,” Monokuma says, “some of you are going to have to share.”

-

It’s weird, how cleanly the cabins have been blown up; it doesn’t seem possible. Some of them are nothing more than smoking craters. And yet Komaeda’s cabin still sits between the remains of Togami’s cabin and the debris of Tanaka’s, perfectly intact.

Hinata’s cabin is one of the losses, which is pretty much what he expected. It’s not like anything else has gone right for him lately.

There wasn’t a lot in Hinata’s cabin to be missed, at least. Other than the shower and furnishings, basically the only things he was keeping in there were those weird Monokuma toys he’s been finding around the island, and, honestly, good riddance.

The trouble is that the shower and furnishings are, you know, kind of important.

“Why is it just the boys who don’t have anywhere to sleep?” Souda asks, in high-pitched outrage. “This is totally unfair!”

It’s true; the destruction was all on the boys’ side. Komaeda and Nidai are the only male students who still have cabins, alive or dead.

“Gotta maximise sexual tension!” Monokuma announces. “Statistically, I’m guessing at least some of you boys are into girls. What happens when you have to share with them?”

“You’re saying we have to let the boys into our cabins?” Koizumi demands.

“Nah,” Monokuma says. “They’re your cabins. You can do what you like. I just thought it’d be a fun little possibility!”

“So why do Komaeda and Nidai get to keep their rooms?” Saionji asks.

“Have you seen Nidai? He’s a monster. No one’s gonna be able to fit in the same bed as him; it’s a waste of a good only-one-bed scenario. And Komaeda-kun?” Monokuma shrugs. “I mean, no one wants to deal with that guy. I thought I’d do everyone a favour.”

“No one wants to deal with Souda either,” Saionji says. “You might as well give his cabin back.”

Souda hesitates. “Th... thanks?”

“So there are four people who need a place to stay, right?” Hinata asks. “Souda, Tanaka, Kuzuryuu and me.”

“I don’t need anything,” Kuzuryuu mutters. “I’ll find my own place to sleep.”

Hinata’s a little torn. On the one hand, he’d feel better if he knew everyone was securely indoors at night. On the other, maybe it’s for the best that Kuzuryuu won’t be sharing a cabin with anyone; he seems kind of dangerous.

From Pekoyama’s quick glance at him, maybe she’s thinking the same thing.

“Unfortunately,” Pekoyama says, “I cannot accommodate anyone in my cabin.”

Hinata’s expecting her to give an explanation, but apparently not.

“I can take whoever,” Owari says. “I sleep in the buff, though, and I’m not changin’ that.”

“Just so you know,” Saionji announces, in her sweetest and most innocent voice, “if any of you perverts try to share with me, I’ll cut out your tongue in the night.”

“Well, I’d be happy to welcome any of you into my cabin,” Komaeda says. “Hinata-kun?”

Sharing a cabin with any of the girls might be a little awkward, but the idea of sharing with a cabin with Komaeda makes Hinata want to crawl out of his own skin. “No, thanks.”

“Of course,” Komaeda says, with a slightly bitter smile. “I understand if you can’t stand to be around me. I’d be happy to sleep on the beach, if you’d prefer to have my cabin to yourself.”

Sleeping in the open means vulnerability, means the possibility of more murders. They can’t risk it. “Keep your cabin. I’ll work something else out.”

“Can’t anyone here make a decision?” Koizumi demands. “Fine. I’ll take Hinata.”

It startles Hinata. He wasn’t expecting that. Honestly, he was pretty sure Koizumi was going to point-blank refuse to have any boys in her cabin.

Is he blushing? He tries to suppress it, somehow; he doesn’t want Koizumi to think he’s getting the wrong idea. He’s really not. It just surprised him to be chosen first, that’s all.

“Uh, okay,” he says. “That works for me. Thanks.”

-

Hinata hesitates in the entrance to Koizumi’s cabin until she throws him an unimpressed look. “If you’re just planning to sleep in the doorway,” she says, “you might as well sleep outside.”

“Sorry.” He enters, locks the door behind him.

It’s a relief to be in a secure room. And, if he has to share, it’s with someone he’s pretty sure he can trust: someone to watch his back, rather than someone who’ll force him to sleep with one eye open.

Of course, there was a time he might have thought the same thing about Komaeda.

He tries to shake the thought out of his head. “Thanks for taking me in.”

“Don’t read anything into it,” Koizumi says. “Of all the boys here, you seem like the most trustworthy. I’d rather choose you right away than wait and end up getting stuck with Souda.” She fixes him with a stern look. “I can trust you, right? You’re not going to kill me? You’re not going to try anything weird?”

“I’m not going to try anything,” Hinata promises. “I can just sleep on the couch.” Is it a couch? “That... seat thing, I mean.”

Koizumi looks at the maybe-a-couch for a long moment, her hand resting at the base of her throat.

She lets out a deep sigh, in the end. “No. It’s not long enough for a person to sleep on. You’re going to need actual rest.”

Is there any other option that wouldn’t be awkward? “Uh...”

“The bed’s big enough for both of us,” Koizumi says. “Just stay on your own side if you don’t want me to kick you out.”

She won’t look at him as she says it. Which is probably for the best, because Hinata has definitely lost his fight with the blush he’s been struggling against.

-

Hinata still isn’t used to the series of revelations that hit him every morning in this place.

Hey, Hinata, his mind whispers, as morning light filters through his eyelids. Welcome back to the world. You’re trapped on an island. You can’t get out unless you kill someone. Togami is dead. Hanamura is dead.

By the way, you’re in bed with someone.

Hinata’s eyes snap open.

Oh, shit.

He was trying to respect Koizumi’s demand: stay on his side of the bed. He was happy with that demand; keeping to separate, clearly defined sides of the bed was an arrangement he was comfortable with. They’d gone to sleep on opposite sides, facing away from each other. He hadn’t thought it would be a challenge to maintain that.

Hinata’s not sure how Koizumi has ended up tucked against his chest. But he’s sure of one thing: if that’s still the situation when Koizumi wakes up, they’re going to have another murder case on their hands.

He’s got his arms around her. How the hell did this happen? Is he in the habit of cuddling people he shares a bed with? When’s the last time he was in the same bed as someone else?

He has to stop thinking about it; he genuinely has no idea, and it’s freaking him out. He doesn’t know exactly how deep his amnesia goes, how much is missing. It feels like he keeps uncovering new holes in his memory.

Hinata closes his eyes. Breathes in and out, very slowly. Trying to move as little as possible, so he doesn’t wake her.

If he’s honest, there’s something kind of comforting about being so close to someone else. This whole situation is terrifying; they’ve been abducted by unknown forces and told they have to kill each other. He guesses maybe he needed a hug.

He’d feel better about it if he didn’t know Koizumi would hate this, though.

He lifts his arm off her side. That’s a start. His other arm is pinned underneath her, so that’s going to be, uh, more of a challenge.

If he just puts his free hand on her shoulder, tries to roll her gently away from – nope, her eyes are opening. Fuck.

It’s like a magic trick. One instant she’s lying close enough for Hinata to feel her warmth, her eyes slowly starting to focus on his, and the next she’s on her feet and halfway across the room. She makes a loud and incomprehensible noise, in an apparent effort to say three different things at once, and then presses her hand to her head and winces her eyes shut.

“Are you okay?” Hinata asks, sitting up.

“I’m – I’m fine, I’m dizzy, I stood up too fast – what!” She opens her eyes again, folds her arms in a startlingly violent motion. “What! Were you! Doing!”

“I’m really sorry,” Hinata admits. “I just woke up like that. I thought I’d be able to stay on my side of the bed.”

Koizumi opens her mouth, and then her gaze shifts to the bed and she lets it fall closed again.

“You did,” she says after a moment, looking away. She scratches the back of her neck. “You’re on your side right now. I guess I must be the one who moved.”

She walks over to the window, focuses on opening the curtains. She’s turned visibly pink, which makes Hinata feel a little better; at least he’s not the only one.

“Sorry,” Hinata says, again. He doesn’t really know what else to say.

Koizumi looks back at him at that: a sharp glance. “Don’t apologise. I just told you it’s not your fault.”

She’s a fair person, Hinata guesses, even if she can be a little intimidating sometimes. “I can find somewhere else to sleep.”

“Like I said.” She moves to another window, opens the curtains in two brisk tugs. “It’s not your fault. You can find somewhere else if you’re worried about it happening again, but I’m not kicking you out.”

“It’s okay,” Hinata says. “I didn’t mind it.”

From the incredulous stare she turns on him, this was the wrong thing to say.

“I’m not trying to hit on you,” Hinata says, instantly. “I just – it was nice, it was comforting. It’s been a weird time.”

Koizumi looks at him for a moment longer, then gives a small nod. “You can use the shower first, if you like.”

-

It’s not quite time for breakfast, even after they’ve both washed and dressed, and Hinata’s not sure how to make small talk with someone who just unexpectedly woke up in your arms. He busies himself with looking around instead.

Koizumi has a couple of pinboards in her cabin, covered with photographs from the island. Most of them are of people smiling, which is kind of nice to see. There’s not much to smile about in their situation, but there have been some better moments, Hinata guesses. It’s good to have a reminder of that.

“Do you just happen to be around when people are smiling?” he asks, looking over at Koizumi. “Or do you have... techniques, I guess, for making people smile? I guess that’s the kind of thing the Ultimate Photographer might be able to do.”

Koizumi seems to take a moment to think about that.

“People smile a lot, you know?” she says at last. “Even in bad situations, you find things to enjoy. This whole thing is awful, but we’re in a beautiful place, we’re making new friends. So, if I have a real talent at all... I guess I’m good at noticing when people are enjoying themselves.”

Hinata finds himself smiling at that, just a little, the corner of his mouth tugging up. “It sounds like a nice talent to have.”

Koizumi laughs and snaps a picture of him.
