Blood On Our Hands Either Way.
By popular demand, here's another entry on Metaphor: ReFantazio! (When I say 'popular demand', I mean that necrophilia told me to post this. It takes very little pressure to get me to talk about videogames.)
We're just about to leave Virga Island. No real plot spoilers below the cut, but you might want to avoid this entry if you don't want to know which characters have joined your party by this point.
At one point, after a fight with a human aboard the gauntlet runner, you're given the opportunity to have a deep conversation with the companion of your choice. I was very tempted by Fidelio, but in the end I was compelled to spend time with my boyfriend Strohl.
In the resulting conversation, Strohl says you're like a little brother to him, but he gets flustered and uncomfortable if you call him 'big bro' in return ('Uh... Nope! Sorry! There's something wrong with that... Right. I'm afraid not'). Then he says, 'You've really... helped me out by being there for me. Well, here. In life, I mean. Right,' which is frankly the gayest thing I have heard in my life, and then he gives you a bracelet. Sorry to tell you this, Strohl, but you're definitely in love with me, and I think you might just have proposed.
When we learn that Fidelio has been hiding his infection out of sheer bloody-mindedness:
Riona: I really like the shitty grumpy dog boy.
Tem: I also really like the shitty grumpy dog boy.
I like Junah a lot as well! An excellent addition to the polycule. 'I like how horny she is for power,' Tem says. 'Horny for power and horny in general, and I appreciate that in a female character.'
It's forty-two degrees Celsius! Take your gloves off!
'Somehow, you lot have managed to make the world seem interesting again. I'm genuinely grateful, you know? Makes a man feel as if he owes you.' I've liked Batlin from his first appearance; I'm glad he likes us, too.
After the scene where the characters eat Dragon's Tears at the festival, there's a timeskip.
Gallica: Phew, finally back to normal.
Tem: Wait, no, I wanted more time with us all drugged!
Riona: What's the point of drugging your characters—
Tem: —if you're just going to skip over it? Anything could have happened! We could have had an orgy!
Riona: I was just thinking it feels like we skipped over the orgy. I think that's supported by Gallica saying, 'Well, that sure felt like a festival. Not that I'm complaining.'
Strohl: My lord, what's in those Dragon's Tears? We've got Heismay babbling on and crying his eyes out... Then Hulkenberg and Eupha were having sword fights with my arms...
Tem: And, of course, we all fucked.
Strohl: This banquet has been... memorable.
Shitty grumpy dog boy is conflicted! This is great for my tastes.
Back at the Rooster Inn at Eht Ria:
Tem: I like that all our beds are in a circle.
Riona: It's so we can hold the class trial without having to get out of bed.
Tem: I can't help noticing there seem to be more people than beds. There are four beds and six of us. Who's sharing?
My guess is that the protagonist is sharing with Strohl, obviously, and Junah is sharing with Eupha. Or I suppose Eupha probably has her own bedroom nearby! But we're definitely sharing with Strohl.
Strohl: I'm praying we get out of here safely.
Junah: I hope the brothers are okay...
Eupha: As long as I'm with everyone...
Hulkenberg: If only I had a snack...
Good to know Hulkenberg has her priorities straight. ('She did just get stoned,' Tem points out.)
I'm still absolutely loving this game. I hadn't even heard of it before the demo came out; it's been such a great surprise!

I do really enjoy that this game has no party members I could find terrible fault with. It was all, "which one do I love the least?"
And also, "Gallica if you don't shut the fuck up during this extremely frustrating final battle, I will crush you with my bare hand."
I think Japan's strict laws on underage consumption in media is why the festival drug orgy was skipped over. It is implied later on that Junah and Will go on a celebratory pub crawl, but it isn't explicitly stated as such for the same reasons. It's a shame! I have no reason to think Will, an eighteen year old operative, wouldn't be drinking alcohol on occasion.
I love the power I have over you, even when my demands are tonally awkward. 😊

You are absolutely correct, and it's beautiful. I would love to see that.
The characters keep telling Will he can't drink yet, and I keep going 'bullshit!' This is a mediaeval fantasy world; you cannot convince me that there's a legal drinking age at all, let alone that it's over eighteen!
