I couldn't stand Spike either; but for the direction his character developed. He didn't annoy me on sight. I liked Captain John because we weren't supposed to think he was better than all his behavior would indicate (a lot of characters, like the Master, I can enjoy as long as I don't have treat them like some tragic and reform-seeking woobie), and because he was fun.
