I have now seen up to 'The Serpent's Pass' in Avatar!
I really like how uncomfortable Toph is when she's in situations where she can't see properly: her frustration in the desert (and her joy when they get back onto solid ground), her reluctance to step out onto the ice. And I like that, although she's more restricted than the other characters in some ways (she can't see flying things), she's less restricted in others (she can see things below the ground). Toph's blindness doesn't feel like something that has been forced in so Avatar can meet some quota of disabled characters; it seems to me that the writers were genuinely interested in exploring the ways in which blindness could work within the rules of their world. And the writers never forget that she's blind, but she's never defined by her blindness; she's just a character who happens to be unable to see in the way we understand 'seeing'.
Likewise, the Asian influence on the world of Avatar doesn't feel like a gimmick; it feels like the world that the creators wanted to create.
I think what I'm trying to say here is 'Avatar is so awesome seriously'.
I also like that it doesn't forget about the characters you thought were just going to be around for a single episode. No! Characters return! Actions taken in the past have consequences! The whole thing is just so well put-together. Anyone who dismisses animation as a lesser form than live-action television should really be made to watch it.
Lately, I have been tripping over and walking into things and slamming doors into my head so often that I have considered keeping a count of how many days I have managed to go without injuring myself in some way. I have not yet managed to actually embark on this project, because I keep failing to reach 'one'. This morning, I set a new record by injuring my left wrist before even getting out of bed. Congratulations, self.
