rionaleonhart: kingdom hearts: sora, riku and kairi having a friendly chat. (and they returned home)
Right. I've played a few more hours of Final Fantasy XII, and I have become many, many times more fond of it.

Quote containing spoilers for a plot bit during that silly mission in which you have to kill the energy-draining Mimic spiders (highlight to read):

"A twin brother? Fancy that. Hmm. But still, the pieces fit. I'll give you that much. And he did look like you."

Oh, my God.

I think I may be a little bit in love with Balthier. He's just constantly being awesome, and, when Vaan is flailing and throwing himself at people and being melodramatic, Balthier will just stand there with his arms folded and give the verbal equivalent of an eyeroll. He showed up and the game immediately became ten times better. (Square, I promise that nobody will be upset if the main character in your next game is the incredibly awesome one instead of the whiny, overdramatic one. Really!)

Also, I've come around fairly quickly to the battle system; it all makes a lot more sense once you've got a few people in your party, and it also means that Balthier can act independently, which is good because I do not feel nearly awesome enough to control him myself. It is nice when your party members heal you without your asking them to, and it is very nice when your MP regenerates over time. Also, Vaan (whose name I haven't quite managed to completely commit to memory yet, even though 'Balthier' and 'Fran' are firmly established - oh, Vaan, why can't you be more interesting?) continues to be far too Tidus-ish. But hey, who cares? Balthier!
