rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (hope is all we have)
Who wants to read an amazing work of Super Dangan Ronpa 2 fanfiction? I'd like to point you towards just looking at you i enjoy myself by suitablyskippy, who writes such a good Komaeda that I'm a bit worried about her. It centres on Hinata and Komaeda but features a lot of the other characters as well, and it's got a really wonderful sense of atmosphere and pace to it; Skippy is the sort of writer who fills me with ferocious why-can't-I-write-like-that envy. I haven't loved a work of fanfiction this much in a very long time. No spoilers beyond the first chapter of the game.

(Also amazing for completely different reasons: The Darkest Despair, The Brightest Hope!, a work of Hinata/Komaeda written by Komaeda himself and hosted by [personal profile] acrossthefloors. If you like exclamation marks, you're in for a treat.)

I've started up a new game of Final Fantasy VII! This is going to be the playthrough in which I try very hard to get a proper feel for the characters and the story, and to stop resenting this poor game which has, through no fault of its own, inspired people to be fantastically irritating in the comments of every Square-related online article.

I'D FORGOTTEN YOU COULDN'T USE THE ANALOGUE STICK IN FINAL FANTASY VII. AND THAT YOU HAD TO HOLD DOWN A BUTTON TO RUN. AND THAT CIRCLE IS CONFIRM AND X IS CANCEL. ALL OF THESE THINGS ARE TERRIBLE THINGS. (I remember being extremely confused when I first tried to play this game; I was pressing X repeatedly on the 'new game' option and it wasn't doing anything at all.) In a weird way, using the directional buttons to move makes me feel like I'm playing a 2D game, even though I can clearly see that this game is three-dimensional.

How does Tifa feel about Barret driving away all her customers by charging into her pub and shooting his gun-arm everywhere? Surely she must be a little ticked off.

The main thing that's struck me so far (I'm not very far in; I've just broken into Shinra HQ, bursting in through the front door for the first time rather than running up three million goddamn stairs) is what an incredibly passionate person Barret is. It's no wonder he clashes with Cloud; Cloud presents himself as cold and uncaring (at the beginning, at least), whereas Barret cares very, very strongly about everything. I suppose this was the first Final Fantasy that really allowed for full-body gestures - previously, characters were largely limited to 'surprised', 'laughing' and 'looking down sadly' (this isn't a criticism; the limitations of sprite art don't make Final Fantasy VI any less excellent) - and the animators certainly took full advantage of their newfound freedom with Barret, who's making big dramatic gestures all over the place.

(I find it very strange that at one point Barret says '&$#%!! You lucky ^$#$,!' and then, literally two lines later, 'Shit! The hell you so calm about?')

Aerith (I NEVER KNOW WHAT TO CALL HER. Her name is 'Aeris' in the original translation but 'Aerith' in official things nowadays, so I suppose 'Aerith' is the current official spelling? I renamed her 'Aerith' in this playthrough, but I wasn't sure about it) has such a sense of mischief. She's pretty great. I don't read much Final Fantasy VII fic, but I get the sense that she's often portrayed as very demure and angelic, and she's just not. She feels very human to me. She's not a saint; she's just a young woman.

Also pretty great: the music. I really, really like the battle theme. I like Midgar as well, actually; it's a very cool setting. There's a part of me that's always a little disappointed when the characters get out into the wider world.

I'm very sorry to hear that Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who. I've had my issues with Eleven's run, but exactly none of those issues have had anything to do with Smith's portrayal of the Doctor. He is perfect. In my eyes, Smith is by far the best thing about Doctor Who at the moment; I've occasionally considered giving it up, but he's always kept me watching. I wish him the greatest success in his future, even if I wish he could stay on for another couple of years.

Nagito Komaeda for the next Doctor.
