All right: which of you beautiful nutcases sent me a little glass unicorn? I was terrified that it would shatter in my hands (my record with anything remotely capable of breaking is unimpressive), but it seems to have survived so far, and it is now happily sitting on my mantelpiece. Thank you so much! I don't know how I can deserve such lovely Internet friends.

I have also received a marvellous Christmas card from sacred_sarcasm, with a message from 'Derren Brown'! It contains the rather beautiful phrase 'lamentably unstellar' and concludes with the P.S. 'I would totally fuck myself. Anyone who wouldn't has self-esteem issues, in my psychologically astute opinion', which made me grin a lot. (I should probably mention that this was a postscript to Derren's message, not sacred_sarcasm's.)

To those whom I still owe Christmas cards: I'm sorry! They may be a bit late, but cards you shall eventually have.


I have been rewatching the fourth season of Supernatural, and it has made me realise that I really, really, really want Castiel to kiss Dean.

I suppose that means I officially 'ship them, then. I don't want it to be reciprocated, but I do rather want some sort of canonical confirmation of Castiel's massive crush.

There seems to be an odd feeling in parts of the Supernatural fandom that it is not possible to 'ship both Dean/Castiel and Sam/Dean. Admittedly, I'm not doing much to disprove that, but I'm interested in seeing how far it holds true amongst you guys, and which pairing is generally preferred.

I also want to make you write for pairings you don't really like and cackle like an evil genius.

Okay, my pollfic is OOC because Castiel actually realises what Dean is doing, when really Castiel wouldn't realise until Dean and Castiel are both naked and even then Castiel wouldn't get it, but hey, it's Christmas.

I ship Dean/Castiel. And Sam/Castiel. And Castiel with Jo or Ellen. So long as Castiel's involved somewhere, I'm good. (I do also like Dean/Sam, and I've read some amazing fic for that pairing - it's like Kirk/Spock for Reboot Trek, or Ten/any-companions for Doctor Who, something I'll read if it's recced or I like the author but not a ship I'm invested enough in to go looking for fic.)

Castiel/Jo or Castiel/Ellen, 'Abandon All Hope' made me realise, would be brilliant. (There is definitely a lot of incredibly good Sam/Dean fic. I don't have anything in particular against the pairing, but I'd prefer the relationship between the brothers to be platonic.)

I have walked between signs in case it's a gateway to another dimension, but equally I have avoided them for that reason. Often, I neglect to consider either. How terribly inconsistent!

However, as a small child, I used to be afraid of driving under bridges for this very reason.

For a moment that night, when Dean mentioned Bert and Ernie (Castiel knows now that gay no longer stands for just 'happy'), and Castiel not dying a virgin, Castiel let himself hope that Dean - often infuriating but irresistible Dean - finally figured it out.

Instead Castiel finds himself in a dark room with a girl who is wearing next to nothing and who has issues with her father. As she shimmies her breasts at his face, Castiel decides it's time to get a bit more assertive when it comes to Dean Winchester.

I cannot write anything in 250 words! Actually I can't write Sam/Dean at all because I just hate the pairing so much (incest has nothing to do with it though), I just find it so tedious my brain tries to crawl out my ears when I see Sam/Dean on a fic header now. Quite possibly it's largely based on the fact that I don't find Jared remotely attractive (unlike Jensen and Misha - hey I'm not shallow, honest). Maybe it's just because before Cas, that was the only real pairing anyone considered and it was the first SPN fanfic I read and way too much of that was all far too dominant!Sam/very pushy!Sam/rapist-demon!Sam (which squicks me as opposed to boring me) so... I don't know. But also I just cannot possibly ever envision their relationship going from obsessive brotherly love to (consensual) sex, I just can't see that kind of dynamic between them.
(this isn't to say I imagine sex as being the most important aspect or even always an aspect with Castiel/Dean though and I always imagine any sex that does occur between them to be all fumbly and awkward).

Hmmm, excellent point. I suppose, given the 'self-esteem issues', that it depends on whether everyone in the world is in fact secretly and/or unknowingly Derren Brown, which is not entirely implausible.

MY POLLFIC SUCKS. But I couldn't think of a pairing I genuinely didn't like in more than an ambivalent "not my cup of tea, but I can see how it might work" kind of way. I eventually settled on Sam/Ruby, but even with that I tend to go "... meh, not a fan, but it enriched the plot quite nicely". /o\

Also, I ship Castiel/Dean really bigly-badly right now, whereas I've read enough Sam/Dean fic that I'm sort of bored of it. Is this how people drift away from their OTPs? I still love Castiel/Dean/Sam, but right now I'm fascinated with the idea of Sam/Gabriel. Or Castiel/Anna. Or Castiel/Jo. Or Dean/Jo. Or Dean/Anna.

I couldn't think of anything in terms of Sam/Dean. Because in my head, they just go "Ew!" and nothing happens.

Also, I tended to avoid the sign thing due to fear of falling sign, but now I'll try it in case of dimensional rift.

(When I was a kid, everyone in my family decided that if drove past the "Do Not Pass" signs on the road, it would take you in to the Twilight Zone, and the only way out was to drive past another one. So we'd count to see if we were going to come home in our universe, or one made entirely of twist endings.)

I ship Sam/Dean and Dean/Castiel! Usually I do this by compartmentalizing them into two different realities; there are stories that take place in the Sam/Dean reality, and stories that take place in the Dean/Castiel reality, and I can happily flit between the two as long as I don't think about it too much. If I had to say which pairing I had a better emotional attachment too, though, it probably would be Dean/Castiel; I just haven't really felt connected to Sam in a while, whereas my love for Castiel knows no bounds. Also it seems like Dean/Castiel has much more potential for humor than Sam/Dean does these days; way back when there were tons of silly stories, but now Sam and Dean are, well, yeah, whereas Castiel still gets to be funny. But I still ship Sam/Dean! IDK, maybe I am weird.

This is something that interests me about Castiel/Dean: quite a few people who 'ship them really, really 'ship them. I 'ship them quite quietly, and I'm curious about why its appeal is so strong to a lot of people. Do you know why you love the pairing so much?

I... mostly find myself not 'shipping anybody in the Supernatural fandom, because I'm weird and canonical when it comes to that show. I did read a Dean/Castiel fic the other day because I didn't realize until halfway through that that's where it was heading and I just decided to roll with it. All that being said, were I to 'ship any non-canonical pairings in the show, it would probably be Dean/Cas.

Sam/Dean... just, no. No. And no. J2, on the other hand...
