rionaleonhart: the mentalist: lisbon, with time counting down, makes an important call. (it's been an honour)

It's Been An Honour.

Catching up on The Mentalist, and oh, my, 'Code Red' is a joy of an episode. One of my favourites.

'I've been murdered'! That's quite an opening.

There was a brief moment of disappointment, because at first I actually thought that Jane had fucked up horrendously and let the killer escape and poison them all and I became terribly excited; realising that it was just another plan was a bit of a letdown, because I have been aching to see Jane really, really screw things up. The joy of the rest of the episode more than balanced it out, though. (And I do sort of love that Jane had the audacity to implement a scheme that involved making an entire buildingful of people think they had hours to live. And that he didn't tell Lisbon it was just a trick at first; tricking her into thinking she was going to die certainly wasn't necessary, but he wanted to give her the experience of realising she was actually going to live (he claims) and to see what she would do in that situation (I suspect).)

Jane mimicking hand gestures! Rigsby leaning on Cho! Lisbon calling the team to tell them it was an honour working with them, and Cho's unreadable reaction! Lisbon punching Jane in the face! (I actually exclaimed 'punch him, Lisbon!', and then she did and I was delighted. Sorry, Jane; I do love you, but you did sort of deserve that.) ALL OF THESE THINGS ARE WONDERFUL THINGS.

Oh, and I've just realised that the 'hmmm, there's no picture on your ID; it's a shame, you're a handsome man' bit at the beginning must have been a red herring. It was entirely successful! I was so red-herringed. (And also amused, because is it relevant to the case? NO; IN THE END IT TURNS OUT THAT JANE WAS JUST FLIRTING WITH THE VIRUS SAFETY GUY.) Actually, the fact that the eye scanner wasn't working was a red herring as well, come to think of it, because in the end it was one of the people who had access to that room after all. And so was the fact that the victim and her husband had an open marriage! It's rather nice that it turned out to have nothing to do with the murder, actually; it's rare in mainstream fiction to see a couple who have a healthy, functional open marriage.

How great was it when Jane accidentally discovered the eye-scanner thing, by the way? He was just being silly, because that's what Jane does, and OH DEAR ACCIDENTALLY OPENING THE DOOR TO THE KILLER VIRUS. I also loved his panicky flinching away when 'ACCESS GRANTED' flashed up, because he is a coward and has no idea what to do. His instinct is just to leap away from whatever he's done and pretend he had nothing to do with it. I love Jane so much.

Why on Earth have I not written any Mentalist fanfiction? I still desperately 'ship Jane/everyone. And not in the way in which I 'ship House/everyone; whilst I'd be happy to pair House with any of his co-workers, I specifically 'ship Jane with all of his co-workers simultaneously. I like Jane/Lisbon and Jane/Cho and Jane/Van Pelt and Jane/Rigsby well enough individually, but it's nothing compared to the massive amounts of sparkly love I have for the concept of Jane being in love with all of them at the same time.

It genuinely makes me sad that 'JANE IS ASEXUALLY IN LOVE WITH THE ENTIRE TEAM AND THEY'RE ALL SORT OF WEIRDED OUT BUT ULTIMATELY OKAY WITH IT' is unlikely to be canon. Jane/Lisbon seems to be the most likely outcome, and I like Jane/Lisbon very much, but it's not the same.

Some insane part of my mind has convinced itself that Jane/the entire team simultaneously is totally going to be canon, in fact. If it is, I am going to officially declare The Mentalist to be the best thing ever made. He definitely does love them all; that we know. Surely it's not that great a step to being in love with all of them? (It's definitely an asexual love, though; he can and indeed should lie in Lisbon's lap and kiss Cho and absently skim his fingers along Van Pelt's thigh, but if he actually has sex with any of them I shall be extremely disappointed. Sometimes he has phonesex with them, but on his end it's more for the amusement of constructing a scenario than for anything else; he's completely composed and unaroused, sipping his tea and smirking slightly as he describes the scene.)
