Take A Look At How Far You've Come.
I posted Don't Look Back (my Waterloo Road/Silent Hill crossover) to fanfiction.net and it got two reviews, both of which conclude with 'please update soon'. I - I don't think I have the heart to say 'er, sorry, that's actually the end, he's presumably trapped in his own head for ever, have a nice day.' (One of them wasn't logged in, so I don't even have the means to say it.)
The main reason for this entry: I just watched episode 4.17 of The Mentalist, 'Cheap Burgundy', and I'm quite excited about it. Thoughts!
DARCY THINKS THAT JANE IS WORKING WITH RED JOHN
THIS IS AWESOME
And Jane is freaked out and defensive but pretending to laugh it off and Lisbon is worried because she knows that, actually, it does sort of look really like Jane is working for Red John. This isn't some 'oh, they're wrong, so they won't be able to convict him and it'll all blow over thing'; they're wrong, yes (to at least some extent), but Jane could definitely go down for this.
It's great to see Jane so completely thrown. He's so cocky and in control most of the time, but this accusation shot straight under his skin. I like to think it's because, on some level, he knows she has a point; he is sort of trying to protect Red John. And she's presenting him with questions he really can't answer: perhaps Red John hasn't killed Jane because he likes playing with him, but why hasn't he gone after the team?
THIS IS SO COOL. I LOVE IT.
This episode also had some really cute Lisbon and Jane interaction, and Rigsby trying to hypnotise the suspect was hilarious (don't ever try to be Jane, Rigsby; you're really not Jane), but mainly I am thrilled because Jane is being accused of working with Red John. It makes such complete sense! I wouldn't have expected The Mentalist to go there, but then again I didn't expect The Mentalist to let its main character commit murder twice either. The first couple of series established it so firmly in my mind as 'not a risk-taking show' that I'm hugely taken aback whenever risks are actually taken.
(Something I miss from the first couple of series, though: I swear Jane used to be happy to hug people. It makes me sad that that no longer seems to be the case. He does tend to get awkward when people he helped in a case want to thank him, though, so maybe it's just that.)
New episode of Waterloo Road tonight! ♥! ...WELL, I CARE. BBC One at eight, if you've absolutely nothing better to do. I just want more people to watch this terribrilliant programme.
I don't suppose I've really sold it with all my 'THIS IS SO BAD, SO BAD, I LOVE IT' entries. Erm. The characters are engaging? The plots are invariably stupid, but the characters and the relationships between them are genuinely engaging. I think so, anyway.

I KNOW! And it makes perfect sense, because I think pretty much every viewer has at some point suspected Jane being or working for Red John, so why wouldn't the characters suspect him also? And as I already said in my own review, if they bring up Doctor Steiner as another suspicious death connected to Jane, I'm going to be ecstatic.
eta: Oh, and I also meant to say that I really love how they didn't make Darcy into a bad guy even though she's going after Jane. She's just doing her job, and the fact is that the way that Jane usually acts makes him look like a sociopath even if he isn't one. One of my favourite bits was when Darcy told Jane that deep inside he really is a cruel person because it was such a wonderful subversion of the old trope where a jerkass character is told that they really are a nice person deep inside.

I was just thinking the exact same thing just this morning. The first season was so cute and fluffy and adorable that I would never have guessed that the show would actually go to the places where it has gone in S3 and S4.

The way I see it, Jane is uncomfortable when people hug him because though he's a very touchy-feely person himself, he doesn't seem to like people touching him without his permission. Just look at how he reacted to Bertram's hapless assistant touching his shoulder in "Red Sky at Night".

That makes a lot of sense, actually. As a lot of his techniques require physical contact, I can imagine that 'someone touching you' equals 'someone trying to gain power over you' in his eyes, and that'd give anyone issues.
