Hamster continues to progress. Look at that, an actual title!

Good news on Richard Hammond's condition: he's been moved from intensive care into a high-dependency ward, and the doctors say he's making 'satisfactory progress'. His condition is now considered 'stable', rather than 'serious but stable'. (Have a source.)

Also, there have been some lovely and reassuring statements from his co-presenters:

From Jeremy:
“I was being nice to him for a change.
“But I wasn’t getting any reaction. He probably thought ‘That sounds like Clarkson but it can’t be — he’s saying nice things’.
“He was lying peacefully with a black eye but didn’t react so I tried something else.
“I said: ‘The reason you’re here is because you’re a crap driver’. He then smiled at me.
“It was an amazing moment, very moving.”

From James:
"He tried to sit up when I came in and he gave me a sort of grin, which I have to say was a very uplifting moment for me," he said. "I had a bit of an unmanly moment at that point.
"I was chuffed to see him and although he's muttering, he seems much like the irritating little shit I know and love. Even when he can't say much, he seemed to make as much sense as he does when he can talk normally."

They're such a wonderful team. I am incredibly touched.

Yes, I know that I've been making rather a lot of entries about this, but I'm worried about him and so are you. Admit it. Everyone in the world loves Richard Hammond and you know it.

It was just wonderfully ironic, because I saw the post and expected people to be their usual snarking selves. Instead there were posts of love and well-wishing and OTPs. It felt odd.

Us FW'ers can be very snarky, but we're not going to kick a man when he's down, especially not when there are bigger idiots to mock. It happened in most of the wanks surrounding Steve Irwin's death as well. There was a lot of 'Well, he did dangerous things but the people who say he deserved it are idiots' and most people were just sad that Irwin was gone.

Oh, I can very much relate. There was a time when I was saying to myself "Pah, crossovers. I certainly shall never write those." You can see how well that resolution worked out.

And then it was "Well, okay, I'm writing crossovers now, but at least I'll never write real-person-fic!"

And then I wrote a real-person crossover.

Every time I say 'I AM NEVER GOING TO WRITE THAT. EVER. THAT WOULD BE INSANE', I always end up writing it. Always.

I don't know whether there'll be any more Jack/Top Gear Team. While Clarkson's article has put me much more at ease about Hammond's condition, I don't think I'll really be able to write any Top Gear fic until he's properly recovered and out of hospital.

These people have, like, renewed my faith in humanity.

I mean, they're still being giant boys about it ("I said: ‘The reason you’re here is because you’re a crap driver’. He then smiled at me." "he seems much like the irritating little shit I know and love."), but there's so much under it. (I know it may seem silly or crass to make fandom comparisons at this point, but Jeremy's reaction is something I've seen analogues of in SG1 canon/fandom and is one of the things that sold me. Utterlyin-character compassion.)

It is so wonderful to hear he's doing better, and it's so reassuring to hear they're all interacting normally. Ish. Clarkson said nice things to him! And of course he only smiled at the mean remarks! So reassuring.
