Try To Catch Up.
I've borrowed my housemate's copy of Pokémon Sun! I haven't played a Pokémon game since White, so I'm excited about this. The last time I played Pokémon, moving diagonally was still an impossible dream.
EVERYTHING'S 3D. IT'S A POKÉMON GAME AND EVERYTHING'S IN THREE DIMENSIONS AND IT'S WEIRD. THERE ARE FULLY ANIMATED CUTSCENES.
I was so torn between Rowlet and Litten for my starter. Litten is so cute! But I know it's going to turn into an enormous muscular furry that shoots fire from its crotch, and I'm not sure I'm prepared for that. Flying is also a really useful type to have on your team, whereas I can live without a fire type. I went with Rowlet in the end. It's going to go through an awkward adolescent stage, but I prefer its final form to Litten's. My Rowlet is named Whit.
Here are the Pokémon I've obtained so far:
- Pikipek, a tiny woodpecker. THIS IS SO CUTE. If I knew I'd be running into such a cute flying type, I might have hesitated to choose the flying starter! Mine is called Piet and I love her. This may pose a real problem further down the line.
- Caterpie. Hey, I know you! Maybe I should impose a 'no Pokémon I'm already familiar with' rule: Curtis the Caterpie can stay in my team for now, but I'll need to swap him out for something new when I have the chance.
- Yungoose. Excellent body shape. Ridiculous surfer hair. Perpetually aggravated expression. I'm not sure how I feel about you. Anyway, your name is Feris. (Update, after playing a little more: Feris is extremely scrappy and I'm very fond of her.)
I've got four Pokémon already! I haven't even officially set out on my journey yet!
- Ledyba. Seriously? Four different species of Pokémon in the first patch of tall grass? I'm never going to get started with this game! This is another Pokémon I'm already familiar with, although I do enjoy its silly bulbous eyes, which I could never fully appreciate in the non-3D games. My Ledyba is a gentleman, so I've named him Gentba.
Thoughts on team makeup: the types I absolutely have to have in my team are water, electric and flying, and ideally I'd like a ground type as well. Flying shouldn't be a problem, given that I already have two flying types in my teaWAIT
WAIT
WHAT
ROWLET'S FINAL FORM ISN'T A FLYING TYPE
?????
Well. Er. Maybe there'll be room for both Whit and Piet in my final team after all.
I'm also hoping to catch a Mimikyu, because it's a scary ghost that disguises itself as a Pikachu in the hope that will help it make friends, and, look, I can't resist that.
So perhaps my final team will contain Whit (grass/ghost apparently???), Piet (flying), Mimikyu (ghost/fairy), and as-yet-unmet water, electric and ground types? We'll see. I think that should give me super-effective coverage against most types, excluding normal, ice and fairy.
I've now given up on listing all the Pokémon I've encountered. There are so many just in the first area! I've caught a Slowpoke (Ori), a Wingull (Flot), a perplexingly moustachioed Rattata (Tessai) and a weird stag beetle thing (Dixon). I can't believe I obtained nine Pokémon before even reaching the first Pokémon Centre.
I have already run into a problem with my self-imposed 'no Pokémon I'm already familiar with in my team' rule, and that problem is that I love my Slowpoke. Slowpoke is a very good Pokémon indeed and I've never raised one before. I don't know if I'm strong enough to resist.

Also wow not even a look-in for Popplio? I see how it is.

Popplio makes me think of the circus, which makes me think of clowns, and I absolutely refuse to be reminded of clowns whenever I look at my Pokémon team.

Aww, poor Popplio. (There was a lot of Popplio hate in the fandom when the starters were revealed. But he's a good boy! He's my son and I love him.)
