I'm Never Getting Over The Tentacled Bondage Artist Oversight.
Time to round up some commentfic bits and pieces I've written here and there!
Higurashi, 150 words, prompt: first kisses. First posted here.
“K-Kei-chan, what did you just – did you just...?”
Mion’s scarlet; she looks furiously embarrassed. Keiichi has to laugh; it’s funny to see her so thrown when she’s always the one in control. “What’s wrong, Mion?”
Mion narrows her eyes. “Oh, this is a game, is it? I’m warning you, I won’t back down.”
“You’re my girlfriend, aren’t you? It’s not like it’s the first time we—”
Wait.
“I’m your what?” Mion demands.
Mion isn’t his girlfriend. They’ve never done this before. Why did he think...
Holy crap, did he seriously just kiss her like it was a normal thing? He’s never kissed her before! He’s never kissed anyone before!
Keiichi buries his face in his hands and tries very hard not to physically burst into flames.
“Ha!” Mion crows. “I knew it! You’re more embarrassed than I am! I win!”
How did this happen?
Until Dawn, 300 words, prompt: getting along with someone in your friend group that you don't particularly like. First posted here.
“You know I always thought you were kind of an asshole?” Sam asks.
Mike looks at her for a moment. “Thanks.”
“I mean, even before last year,” Sam says. “You were always just this guy strutting around, breaking all my friends’ hearts. And every breakup I kept thinking okay, great, I don’t have to hang out with that guy any more, and then you’d just hook up with someone else I knew.”
He’s giving her an extremely wounded expression.
“I guess it probably goes both ways,” she says. “I was just the killjoy your girlfriends kept making you spend time with.”
“I mean, I knew we weren’t hang-out-alone friends,” Mike says. “I didn’t know you didn’t like me. I liked you fine.”
She laughs, as quietly as she can manage. They haven’t seen any of those monsters here yet, but they need to stay on guard. “Don’t say that; you’ll make me feel bad!”
“Oh, I’m not allowed to make you feel bad?” Mike asks. “You’re gonna punch me like that and tell me I can’t hit you back? I can’t believe I’m probably going to die tonight and the last thing I hear is going to be my friend telling me I’m a jerk.”
“I’m not trying to hurt you,” Sam says. “I just... I wanted you to know I was wrong about you. In case we don’t make it out. You’ve been trying really hard to keep everyone safe, and I just... you’re a better guy than I thought.”
“You couldn’t just say hey, Mike, you’ve been pretty cool tonight?” Mike asks. “You had to go hey, Mike, I’ve hated you for literal years first?”
Sam hesitates. “I wouldn’t say hated.”
“Okay,” Mike says. “We’re definitely getting out of this alive, because we need to have a serious talk about how fucked-up this conversation was.”
Sam finds herself smiling a little, despite everything. “Fine. It’s a promise.”
Zanki Zero, 100 words, prompt: no going back. First posted here.
“It’s hard to take it in, really,” Ryo admits. “Everything’s gone. I’m kind of scared of the moment it’ll hit me. Y’know?”
Haruto looks out, across the ruins of the world, the sky and the sea so bright they almost hurt to look at. Eight people left. Civilisation a wreck. The few of them who are still here have nothing left to do but stay alive.
But they have each other. And that’s more than he had in his life before.
“It’s hit me,” he says. “I just... this probably won’t make sense, but I think I’m okay with it.”
Zanki Zero, 250 words, prompt: bondage. First posted here.
“Okay, look,” Ryo says. “Look.” He pauses. “Look.”
Haruto glances around. “Er, what am I supposed to be looking at?”
“Look,” Ryo says.
“If you don’t want to do it—”
“No, I’m doing it,” Ryo says, instantly. “You want to be tied up? I am all over that. I’m just thinking... how to get started.”
Haruto just looks at him, waiting for more.
“You know!” Ryo snaps. “Like, how to start binding you, what to use – you can’t rush art, Haruto!”
“You’re holding a rope,” Haruto says. “Wouldn’t that work?”
“Okay, look,” Ryo says.
There’s a pause.
“So we’ve got all these tentacles,” Ryo says.
Haruto’s heart sort of stutters. He was prepared for something new; he’s not sure he was prepared for this. “You want to tie me up with your Clione?”
“Look, we have tentacles,” Ryo says. “It’s driving me crazy that we’re not getting to use them. Have you ever met a bondage artist who didn’t dream of tying people up with his own tentacles?”
“I think you’re probably the only bondage artist I’ve met,” Haruto says, taking a step or two back. He’s not afraid of Ryo, but he’s a little afraid of this idea.
“Exactly.”
“Maybe just the rope,” Haruto says. “For my first time.”
Ryo sighs. “Fine,” he says, with undisguised sorrow. Haruto, for an instant, almost feels guilty for choosing the rope over the unstable, potentially murderous tentacle parasite.
There’s a pause, and then Ryo breaks into a grin. “This is still gonna be great.”
I really want to write a full Higurashi fic about Keiichi being haunted by memories from other timelines, but for some reason it's not taking root. It's one of my favourite types of fic, and it's such a good canon for it!
(I'd also love to write a full Zanki Zero tentacle bondage fic, but I doubt I'd be able to do the concept justice.)

Ahahaha, perfect. :D
And I don't know Zanki Zero but this makes me happy.
I now have two friends being excited over Zanki Zero and I'm increasingly feeling the urge to play it somehow. So many games, so little time.

I'm very disappointed that she refers to her fic on her Twitter as Wanderlust of the Golden Witch rather than by the far superior title of YOU'RE BACK ON YOUR ASSHOLE GRANDPA'S PRIVATE ISLAND, although I suppose YOU'RE BACK ON YOUR ASSHOLE GRANDPA'S PRIVATE ISLAND isn't great for the character limit.

Yuma turned out to be so much more interesting than I was expecting! The game leant very heavily on her interest in food at the beginning, so I thought 'is her internal narration just going to be about food?', and I was not at all expecting it to be non-stop 'I'm actively plotting to murder all of you.' It was the most incredible surprise.

You also definitely should write that Higurashi story about Keiichi and the memories from the other timelines - I'm very excited to see you write it! Though maybe when we finally get episode 7 there will be the right kind of inspiration for you?

These poor kids.
Please come soon, episode seven! I'm so ready for more misery.
