B: Who The Hell Are You?

Up to episode 3.13 of Lost, 'The Man from Tallahassee'!

I keep wondering about the fact that Linus, in 'A Tale of Two Cities', told Kate the next two weeks were going to be very unpleasant.

Why the specific number? What were they planning to do after two weeks? It didn't seem like whatever project the slaves were working on would be finished by then. The Others clearly aren't shy about overworking them - they only get ten minutes for lunch - so it seems unlikely they do two-week shifts.

Were they planning to kill her? Look, I don't feel great about giving advice on efficient slaving, but that seems like a waste of labour. That said, they do seem strangely willing to waste labour; why did they try to kill Sawyer?

Were they planning to... let her go? Were they hoping to break her and then make her one of them, and, if so, why were they so confident about the timeframe? I'm really puzzling over this.

'Stranger in a Strange Land': being in a cage looks pretty good on Jack.

Interesting that he's lying to protect Juliet!

I'm always tense when things seem okay in the flashback scenes, waiting for something to go wrong. I'm not sure what I expected to go wrong in this particular instance, but it wasn't 'Jack violently forces someone to give him a tattoo that makes everyone hate him'.

(It would make more sense for everyone to hate him because he made the artist tattoo him against her will, but the impression I get is very much that the tattoo itself, even when not visible, somehow makes everyone hate him.)

Now that I've pinned down 'can't let anything go' as one of Jack's central traits, it's easier to make sense of some of the things he does, e.g. his very weird insistence on being tattooed.

'Enter 77': I'm enjoying Lost's technique of making this expository conversation more engaging by having Sayid shot in the arm beforehand so he's in terrible pain throughout. Exposition is always better if someone's attractively suffering.

WHY WOULD YOU LOCK MANUAL COMPUTER CONTROL BEHIND WINNING A GAME OF CHESS

SOMETIMES THERE'S AN EMERGENCY AND YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO PLAY CHESS AGAINST A COMPUTER BEFORE YOU CAN CONTACT THE MAINLAND, DHARMA INITIATIVE

Locke once again causes problems wherever he goes. I'm glad the cat survived, at least!

'Par Avion': wow, Jack's dad really gets around in these flashbacks. Jack, Sawyer, Ana Lucia and now Claire?

JACK
AND CLAIRE
ARE HALF-SIBLINGS?????

If the survivors end up in the big poly relationship I crave for them, it's possible there are going to be some awkward realisations at some point.

'The Man from Tallahassee': I'm always a big fan of characters being weirdly intimate without actually being romantically involved, so I loved Kate getting extremely close to Jack while asking him what the Others did to him. And then Jack pressing his face against her hair and whispering that he'll come back for her!

Alex really does look a lot like Danielle. Impressive casting there.

(holy shit, I just looked Alex's actor up, she also played Malcolm's awkward classmate Cynthia in Malcolm in the Middle, I am reeling.)

Locke, you don't have to destroy every potential way off the island! If the option to leave comes up, you can just not leave the island! Please calm down!

LOCKE, WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS. You are the Komaeda of Lost. I don't like this thought, but I've had it and I can't unhave it now.

I paused the episode to write that note, then unpaused it, and an instant later Locke's father charged him out of the window. I gasped 'holy fuck!' aloud.

My only note on the episode 'Flashes Before Your Eyes' was 'what the fuck is going on, I'm having a great time', which I think neatly sums up the experience of Lost as a whole.

I love that when I'm watching things! (I have watched both Legion and Southland Tales repeatedly, on purpose, and the second one is when the director of Donnie Darko decided to make an even weirder movie.)

I don't know if you've watched Gou/Sotsu or just the original Higurashi, but as I read this line I couldn't help but replace 'Locke' and 'the Island' with 'Satoko' and 'Hinamizawa'. xD

Flashes Before Your Eyes is my favorite S3 episode because of how awesomely fucking weird it is. :D
