rionaleonhart: death note: light contemplates picking up this mysterious notebook. i'm sure it'll be fine. (here at the crossroads)
When 2020 was looming, I posted an entry about the media that had made a real impact on me in the 2010s. I had fun with this, but it's hard to narrow things down across an entire decade! Maybe I should start doing these media roundups more frequently? Every half-decade, perhaps?

Oh, hey, it's 2025.

In alphabetical order, here are ten canons from the last five years that I think I'm going to remember! Note that this is media I originally experienced between 2020 and 2024, rather than necessarily being media that was originally released in that period.

1. Celeste. One of my absolute favourite games. Great music, charming characters, satisfying gameplay. It's tough, but I rarely found it frustrating, and I was delighted to realise how much I'd improved when I went back to replay from the beginning. Playing Celeste is a lot like playing the piano, learning the right pattern and timing of button presses through repetition until you can run smoothly through a level. I'll often find myself replaying Celeste levels when I've got a little time and nothing else is grabbing me, in the same way I'll often take a moment to sit at the piano and play a few pieces I know by heart.

2. The Coffin of Andy and Leyley. The relationship between these siblings is just so awful and intimate and fascinating; I can't get enough of it. I want to swim around in all this hideous codependency. When I first drafted this list at the start of the year, I noted, There's a chance I'm being too hasty with this one; I discovered it right before 2024 ended, so I haven't had time to be sure it's going to be a lasting interest. But, having had my mind obliterated by the latest chapter, I can now say with confidence that I am never going to stop thinking about this horrible game.

3. Lost. What an experience! I love it when characters are stranded together and forced to bond under high pressure, and this is an absolutely stellar example. Went in some wild directions, too; I said 'what the fuck' so many times while watching this show. Jack Shephard is a wreck of a man in a way that I find fascinating.

4. Omori. This game fucked me up. A lot of it is fun and charming! And then there are the parts that severely messed with my head. Two separate aspects gave me trouble sleeping. Some really interesting uses of gameplay, including one of the best-executed plot reveals I've ever seen.

5. Person of Interest. In a lot of case-of-the-week shows, the case itself is the least interesting part for me. In Person of Interest, I found the individual weekly cases absolutely gripping. The fact that the murders they're investigating haven't happened yet gives each case a living main character, usually the would-be victim, which makes them so much more fun to watch. I really enjoy Reese as a character, too.

6. Persona 5. I picked up Persona 5 in lockdown, when it was heavily discounted. I'd heard good things about the Persona series, but I'd always been intimidated by how long and complicated the games sounded. Still, it was 2020, and I wasn't able to leave the house, so it seemed like the right time for a hundred-hour RPG. It was an incredible decision. What a stylish, fun game! What great kids! I played it non-stop for a month and a half and had an absolute blast.

7. Persona 4. I was a little concerned about going back to Persona 4 after playing 5. I'd loved Persona 5 so much; what if the previous game was a disappointment? But I ended up loving Persona 4 just as passionately, largely because of Yosuke; he's a good-hearted but slightly shitty disaster of a teenage boy who's helplessly in love with the protagonist, and I find him endlessly endearing.

8. Severance. I've always been compelled by stories about weird things happening to people's memories, and by stories about people developing intense relationships while isolated together, so Severance is essentially the perfect canon for me. By a long way, it's the most gripping show I've ever watched. I'm so nervous when I sit down for a new episode; I never know what to expect!

9. Taskmaster. What a show. It makes me laugh like nothing else. The way it keeps a single set of contestants for each series adds a lot to the experience; you really get to know the contestants and their approaches to these ridiculous tasks over the course of a series. The New Zealand and Australian versions are just as great to watch; Greg Davies remains an unparalleled Taskmaster, but, if I'm honest, Paul Williams is my favourite assistant.

Wait, that's only nine! Okay, I'm going to add a tenth, but this is definitely cheating:

10. Death Note. I absolutely did not first experience Death Note between 2020 and 2024; I've enjoyed it since 2008! But I feel it sort of fits in my 'canons of the last five years' post because I got back into it in 2023 in a way I'd never been into it before. I watched the stage musical, absolutely lost my mind and spent months thinking about nothing but Light Yagami. Let's say the tenth canon here is Death Note: The Musical.

Honourable mention to The Quarry for the burst of intense ficwriting it inspired in me! I wasn't that drawn in by the canon itself, but the potential in Travis and Laura's relationship really grabbed me by the throat.

EDIT: WAIT, I just thought of a legitimate number ten!

10-2: Die Hard. We were locked down for Christmas in 2020, and I was sorry that I couldn't visit my family, but the upside was that I joined in my housemates' Christmas tradition of watching Die Hard. This film was such a delightful surprise for me! I went in expecting a badass, stoic action hero; I got a desperate, terrified mess. I found John McClane's suffering so compelling. What a blast.

Someone anonymously messaged me on Tumblr today to say that I should write more Lost fanfiction, and they're absolutely right. What a great show.
rionaleonhart: final fantasy vii remake: aerith looks up, with a smile. (looking ahead)
[personal profile] doreyg tagged me to answer these questions about fanfiction on Tumblr, and I thought I'd post my responses here as well! As I originally wrote this for a Tumblr audience, I'll probably end up reiterating some things I've already said on here.

How many works do you have on ao3?

On my main account, Riona, it’s 234. I also have 130 works across two pseuds on my secondary account, rionaleonhart (for older works and ficlets), so in total I’ve posted 364 works to AO3.

What’s your total word count?

My combined total on AO3 is 1,136,030 words. If I look at the documents in which I keep all my writing archived, it’s slightly higher - 1,266,834 words - because I haven’t posted everything I’ve ever written to AO3.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

My most popular fic, by a long way, is And Again (Danganronpa, Naegi is caught in a time loop, 7,227 kudos). This was the first fic I ever posted to AO3, and I was startled by the way it blew up! For a while I was slightly intimidated to post anything else in case I let everyone down.

The others in the top five: Life Imitates (FFXV, Noctis/Prompto, 5,566 kudos), Vessels (Deltarune, 2,635 kudos), Visitors (Assassin’s Creed/Sense8, 1,607 kudos) and Memory Error (Doki Doki Literature Club!, 1,551 kudos). Most of these were an accident of timing: I happened to post just when the fandom was starting to get big. The exception is Visitors, which mainly picked up readers because it ended up expanding into a vast cowritten series.

Interesting to note that four of my top five fics are gen; I wasn’t expecting that!

More talking about fanfiction. )

I've really slowed down on writing crossovers, thinking about it. I should send someone to Silent Hill at some point; it's been years!
rionaleonhart: kingdom hearts: sora, riku and kairi having a friendly chat. (and they returned home)
[personal profile] abyssal_sylph did this fandom meme over the summer, and I thought it looked like fun! The full list of questions was originally compiled by [personal profile] trobadora and can be found here. To keep my entries to a reasonable length, I'll just do a few questions at a time, rather than posting the entire thing at once.

What's changed about your fandom life in the last 365 days?

The biggest change is that I've got a website now! It's great to have a space on the Internet I can just talk about Final Fantasy VIII as much as I want (I say, as if I didn't already do that in this journal).

Your newest fandom.

In Stars and Time, maybe? I've written a couple of fics; does that make it one of my fandoms? It's a time loop game with a lot of charm; I had fun with it, but I don't really think of myself as in the fandom.

The last thing I got into and ended up thinking about a lot is Omori, a game that absolutely haunts me and will probably do so for a long time. I haven't actually written for it and don't have any fic ideas, but I found it fascinating and I often find myself seeking out fanart.

The last thing I got into so heavily that it qualified for a 'my fandom history' writeup was Severance, back in February. Such an interesting concept! One of the most absorbing shows I've ever watched.

Writing-wise, this year has been more about revisiting older fandoms than launching into new ones, now that I think about it.

You've got your OTP, you have to throw a third into the mix (from the same fandom), creating an OT3. Who is the OTP, and in your opinion, why would they make a perfect third for them?

The first pairing I thought of was Nate/Elena from Uncharted, and the ideal third - Victor 'Goddamn' Sullivan, the third point of their adventure trio - is so obvious that I've actually written that threesome already.

Some potential thirds for assorted other pairings that came to mind, discounting pairings (e.g. Sora/Riku) where the third is so obvious it goes without saying:

- Jeff/Annie from Community: I think Britta would probably be the best fit, but I strongly prefer Jeff/Annie on its own. Their chemistry is so weird and intense!

- Light/L from Death Note: Misa, obviously. Or some weird thing with Ryuk, where L is unaware that there's a third entity in their relationship. That had not occurred to me before this instant, but I'm sort of fascinated by the idea now. Ryuk joins Light and L in the bed, forcing Light to suppress his reactions in order to hide the fact that he's having a threesome when, from L's perspective, only the two of them are there. Someone please write this; it's not in my skillset!

- Kane/Abby from The 100: Jaha is the only option coming to mind. This could either sort of work or go very badly, depending on the point in canon that Jaha is coming from.

- Jack/Kate from Lost: Sawyer? Probably Sawyer, as if Jack and Kate don't have enough potential to crash and burn on their own. For less guaranteed disaster: Charlie. For even more guaranteed disaster: Locke.

- Hinata/Komaeda from Danganronpa: I know Hinata/Komaeda/Nanami is popular, but I think I might be more interested by the thought of Hinata/Komaeda/Kuzuryuu. WAIT, NO: there's a correct answer here, and it is Makoto Naegi. Hinata/Komaeda/Naegi would be incredible; Hinata/Naegi would be very cute, and then they'd both desperately have to try to cope with the presence of Komaeda.

- Travis/Laura from The Quarry: Max or Ryan, I suppose? I prefer Ryan, but Max has the fun 'Travis kept me imprisoned' aspect. Travis and Laura aren't great candidates for an OT3, though; they're at their best when they're isolated and weirdly fixated on each other.

- Keiji/Sara from Your Turn to Die: hard to envision, because Keiji has zero interest in anyone who isn't Sara. Maybe some sort of fucked-up situation with Sou?

- Yosuke/Yu from Persona 4: Chie's probably the most obvious candidate, but I think adding Kanji to the mix here would be very funny. Yosuke and Kanji are both disaster boys with a lot of anxiety about their sexuality; it'd be fun to throw them together!

- Zell/Squall from Final Fantasy VIII: Rinoa! Rinoa, no question. This would be adorable.

- Beatrice/Battler from Umineko: oh, God, there's no good answer here. Jessica? Shannon, Kanon? Ange??? (Teenage Ange, to be specific, which by no means prevents this from being a fucked-up relationship but does at least make things a little less fucked up.) There's a huge amount wrong with Beatrice/Battler already (I say, with deep fondness), and adding any possible third would only make things worse.

- Utena/Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena: again, there is no good answer here. I think the only way out is to accept that and pivot to choosing the worst possible answer: Akio. An Utena/Anthy/Akio scenario, focusing on how the girls eventually manage to escape him. Wait, that's just Revolutionary Girl Utena.

Oh, wow, I have gone severely overboard on this question. It's an interesting one to think about, though! Feel free to share your own answers in the comments, if you'd like.
rionaleonhart: revolutionary girl utena: utena has fallen asleep on her schoolwork. (sort of exhausted really)
I posted a meme over on Tumblr, which I’m going to reproduce here:

Give me any two (or more) characters I’m familiar with, and I’ll tell you how they would cope in an ‘oh no, there’s only one bed’ scenario!

I got a good number of requests on Tumblr, and I had a blast with all of them. There’s a surprising amount of scope for variation in an ‘only one bed’ situation, and it’s interesting to think about how different character combinations would react to it! My responses exist on a spectrum from ‘general thoughts’ to ‘tiny ficlet’.

Tem has been showing me Star Trek: Deep Space 9! I have very little prior experience of Star Trek - I'd only previously seen a handful of original series episodes and the 2009 film - so this is an interesting experience.

I'm not currently experiencing any desire to jump into the DS9 fandom, but I am enjoying the show. We're in early season five; we've just seen 'Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places'. Here are some scattered thoughts:

- This show feels surprisingly contemporary! There are a few entertaining details, e.g. the fact that every document appears to be on a separate electronic tablet (very much in the vein of Red Dwarf's 'VHS tapes are triangular now, because it's the future!'), but it rarely feels dated. It also feels a lot more intentionally homoerotic than I tend to expect of shows from the nineties!

- Sisko is probably my favourite character. I really like his relationship with Jake, and how much he cares for his crew, and the insubordinate streak he has to keep carefully masked with surface courtesy in his position as the station's commander.

- I really enjoy the friendship between Sisko and Dax, but also I sort of ship them a little, largely because introducing a romantic or sexual element to their dynamic would be so deeply weird for Sisko. I just like it when characters are unsettled and confused by their own feelings!

- Nobody on this space station knows how to stand a normal distance from each other. This was also an issue on Lost, come to think of it: whenever two characters are in the same shot, it feels like they're about to make out. I say 'issue', but in fact I am absolutely not complaining.

- We started this watchthrough when I was very much in Death Note mode, so it was weird to learn that DS9 includes a character called Kira! Both DS9 Kira and Death Note Kira are strong believers in solving problems through the power of murder, too. ('Kira is so violent,' Tem commented, 'and she thinks that's morally bad of her, whereas I think it's morally cool of her.')

- I find it very funny that everyone's into Kira. Kira may not be the protagonist of the show itself, but she's the protagonist of a dating sim going on off to the side. Has anyone made a dating sim in which you play as Kira Nerys? Someone should.

If I played the hypothetical Kira dating sim, incidentally, I'd be most interested in pursuing the Odo route (Odo's crush on her is very sad and sweet), the Gul Dukat route (their 'mutual hostility, but also Dukat is really into her' dynamic is incredible), and the O'Brien threesome route.

- I'm going to linger on the subject of a Kira/Miles/Keiko threesome, because Kira being pregnant with Miles and Keiko's child is the storyline that finally made me go 'okay, I have to write an entry about this show now'. The show dealing with the real-life pregnancy of Kira's actor by transferring Miles and Keiko's foetus into Kira's womb: insane, incredible, I could never come up with such a stroke of genius. And then Kira moves into the O'Briens' quarters!

- I mentioned earlier that I love characters being unsettled and confused by their own feelings, and 'Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places' was iiiiiincredible for that. Miles and Kira having weird feelings about each other in their already very weird 'cohabiting while she's carrying his child' situation absolutely delighted me. Perfect episode.

Tem: DS9 is the Star Trek where I'd be least surprised to learn that all the main characters had had an orgy.
Ginger: Sisko doesn't seem as horny as the others.
Riona: But he'd still be part of the orgy, I think. He wouldn't cry if he missed out on it, in the way Bashir would, but he'd be up for getting involved.
Ginger: Oh, wow, Bashir would be heartbroken. You should write the fic where everyone except Bashir has an orgy, and then Bashir finds out.
Tem: No! That would be so sad! You can only write it if it ends with everyone making up for it with a gangbang focused on Bashir.
rionaleonhart: revolutionary girl utena: utena has fallen asleep on her schoolwork. (sort of exhausted really)
Been having some weird, intricate dreams lately. Here's one of those dream roundup posts.

About a week ago, I posted an unfinished fanfiction meme to Tumblr, and I thought it might be fun to play here as well!

Name a canon you know I have at some point enjoyed, and I’ll dig up and post an excerpt from the unfinished fanfiction I’ve almost certainly got lying around. (If you name something I don’t have any unfinished fanfiction for, I may write a few lines on the spot. We’ll see!)

I’ve posted this before, many years ago, but don’t worry about avoiding canons that were requested back then; I’ll just try to dig up something else.

Here are the excerpts I posted in response to requests on Tumblr:

[archiveofourown.org profile] Cinder_Quill: For the fanfiction ask meme: any unfinished stories about DN Angel?

This was tricky! But I dug through an old notebook, and I managed to uncover a tiny paragraph. This was from a Kingdom Hearts/DN Angel crossover I have zero recollection of contemplating, in which Kingdom Hearts Riku is talking to Daisuke. Both Riku and Satoshi are self-loathing teenagers who are intensely in love with someone they feel they don’t deserve, and I have a lot of emotions about them.

“Maybe it’s not my place,” Riku says. He glances in Satoshi’s direction. “Or maybe I’m just… projecting or something. I don’t know. But I think you’re important to him.”

[tumblr.com profile] academicgangster: Ace Attorney for the unfinished fanfiction meme?

Here’s a snippet in which Apollo and Athena stay up working too late and end up accidentally falling asleep on each other.

Ace Attorney unfinished snippet: Apollo and Athena. )

[tumblr.com profile] futuresoon: Danganronpa!

I took this to be a request spanning the entire Danganronpa series and dug up a little Danganronpa 2 snippet. Major Danganronpa 2 spoilers under the cut.

Danganronpa 2 unfinished snippet: Hinata and Komaeda. )

[personal profile] wyomingsmustache: Okay so I know it's been well over a decade since you've written anything Top Gear related but I was showing my roommate an episode the other day and telling him stuff about my Top Gear fandom days so now I am curious if you've got any bits and pieces leftover from back when, so for the fanfiction meme, Top Gear? (And if you don't, completely understandable)

We’re really getting into the deep lore here. Here’s something… mildly weird and dark? By Top Gear standards, at least. Because apparently I decided I should write two crossovers between Top Gear and Silent Hill. But Silent Hill is in Wales, for some reason.

(I know the reason. It’s because this was also going to be a crossover with Torchwood. It’s probably for the best that it never got finished.)

Top Gear unfinished snippet: the trio unknowingly approach Silent Hill. )

[personal profile] doreyg: Death Note for the unfinished fanfic meme!

I responded with a Death Note/Silent Hill snippet I’d previously posted on this journal. So it wouldn’t just be material I’d already posted elsewhere, though, I also uncovered a few lines from a notebook (a regular non-death notebook):

In another world, you might have been someone else. Nothing special, but enough. Light Yagami, an ordinary man with an ordinary life.

But this is the world you’re in, and you’ve become a god.

[tumblr.com profile] tweetymcbastardface: Waterloo Road. Do it.

I can’t believe anyone would do this to me.

Waterloo Road unfinished snippet: Tom/Izzie/Lorna. )

And that’s all the unfinished fanfiction requests I received on Tumblr! Feel free to request a fandom in the comments here, and I’ll see if I have anything lying around for it, or, failing that, I’ll see if I can scribble something down.
rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
It feels good to be able to make polls again! It's been a long time.

I usually don't include 'I can't answer this' options, because they can drown out other responses. I've included them for question three, though, because I'm curious about how many people aren't answering because they don't know the characters versus how many people aren't answering because they don't like the characters. You can still submit the poll if you haven't responded to all the questions, so feel free to skip anything you can't answer.

Poll #31611 The best sort of poll is a poll where you can vote for Squall Leonhart twice.

The final question is based on a dream I had a while ago, in which it was a meme to make one-page 'fact sheets' about canons. These fact sheets always ended with 'QUIZ TIME!', a simple question in allcaps, and the answer options 'A) A COCONUT       B) AN OLD MAN'.

'Who could have played Until Dawn?' was the only question I remembered from the dream, and I felt compelled to bring it to life.
rionaleonhart: death note: light's kind of embarrassed that he poured all that fake sincerity into an obviously doomed ploy. (guess not)
On Tumblr, I reblogged a post inviting people to ask my top five of anything. [archiveofourown.org profile] Cinder_Quill asked me for my 'top 5 fictional characters who make the WORST decisions'. This was a pretty fun list to make, so I thought I'd reproduce my answer here!

Oh, man, I love so many characters who make bad decisions! I'm just going to pluck some out of the air.

I'm not sure whether your question was 'who are your five favourite characters who make terrible decisions?' or 'of your favourite characters, which five make the worst decisions?', so I'll give you two lists.

Five terrible decision-makers who I love, emphasis on 'who I love':

- Sean Diaz from Life Is Strange 2. Look, I cannot blame this kid for going on the run with his nine-year-old brother. He was panicking, the police were coming, and a police officer had just ruined his entire life, so naturally he was unwilling to stick around and encounter more of them. It was a deeply understandable decision, but it was nonetheless a decision that fucked a lot of things up.

- Ellie from The Last of Us. I started loving Ellie in the first game, which was before she started making really terrible decisions. But I still love her after her desperate 'if I kill enough people, I'll feel better, right? right???' quest of the second game, and that definitely means she qualifies for this list.

- Jack Shephard from Lost. Jack is a grieving, angry, unstable mess who's been thrown into a leadership position when he's barely clinging on to any form of reason with his fingernails. He has a lot of intense feelings, a gigantic saviour complex, poor self-control and no ability to delegate. Everything he does is a) guaranteed to blow up in his face and b) absolutely fascinating to me.

- James Sunderland from Silent Hill 2. Look, if your dead wife tells you to come to a town, and then the town is full of monsters, you turn around and leave. I feel like there was another big terrible decision he made too, but I can't - I can't quite remember. That's weird. I wish I had a recording or something to jog my memory.

- Light Yagami from Death Note. Light is very smart, but he's also very proud, and he loves using his own intelligence to convince himself that the correct course of action coincidentally happens to be the thing he really wants to do. Yes, if he kills these people in this way, it'll make him look suspicious. But that's what he wants! It's all part of his ingenious plan to catch L, and totally not just because he wants to send L a personal 'fuck you' message. The 'fuck you' is coincidental. This is a very smart move.

Five terrible decision-makers who I love, emphasis on 'terrible decision-makers':

- Seifer Almasy from Final Fantasy VIII. One of the first terrible decision-makers I ever developed a fondness for! Seifer, you can't assist an evil sorceress in taking over the world just because you think it's cool and romantic and you really want to show up your rival at school.

- WD Gaster from [personal profile] zarla's Undertale fancomic Handplates. Gaster is an expert in doing terrible things while convincing himself that there's definitely, definitely no other course of action. He's awful and I love him.

- Chloe Price from Life Is Strange. Chloe is an absolute disaster in a way I find refreshing from a female character. Playing Life Is Strange is a struggle because I want Chloe to like me, but everything she wants me to do is terrible. I don't want to steal money or shoot people or hang up on my distraught friend, Chloe!

- Aaaaand Jack Shephard and Light Yagami again. Fascinating characters. I could watch them making ill-advised decisions all day.

Honourable mentions to the other characters who crossed my mind while I was working on these lists: Mike Munroe, Jeff Winger, Mondo Owada, Dr Cox, Keiichi Maebara, and Lightning 'look, I don't expect punching a god in the face to go well, but I reeeeeally want to punch this god in the face' Farron.

If you'd like to ask my top five of anything in the comments, incidentally, go ahead!
rionaleonhart: final fantasy xiii: lightning pays intense attention to you. (speak carefully)
I've been watching From, because I keep finding myself tempted to rewatch Lost, which seems silly when it's only been a year since I first watched it. I often see From recommended to people who enjoyed Lost, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Having watched the first nine episodes, I haven't entirely worked out how I feel about From. I think part of my issue is the way it deals with its mysteries.

Lost obviously had an 'ooh, what does this mean?' mystery aspect, but I feel it mainly used its mysteries to tell stories about its characters and their relationships. I never felt that the mysteries were the most important part of Lost, which is probably just as well, because, from the discussions I've seen, it sounds like people who watched Lost primarily for the solution to the mysteries had a much less satisfying experience than I did.

From leans very hard on its mysteries, and I don't think they can take the weight, because they don't really feel like mysteries to me. When the characters strip the protective coating off the cables leading to lamps in the town, they find there are no wires inside! So how does the electricity work? They're going to dig a big hole to follow the cables! Ooh, what will they find?

I'm not invested in trying to work out where the electricity is coming from, because the answer obviously isn't going to be anything that makes sense by real-world standards. If there are no wires, there's no electricity, which means the lamps work by magic. Unless someone is pulling an Umineko, there's no mystery here. What's going on is clearly impossible. Therefore: magic.

How does the road out of the town just lead straight back to the town despite not looping around? How can you enter a hole in a tree and emerge from a basement on the other side of town? Magic; there's no other possible explanation. I have solved all the mysteries.

There might be more intricacies to the magic, of course. Maybe the cables lead to a sentient ball of lightning that sends electrical zaps to the lights; maybe they lead to a gigantic frog that whispers magical electric incantations along the empty cables. But I'm not going to spend time trying to work it out, because, whatever it is, it's not going to be something that fits into any set of rules I understand.

There's nothing wrong with weird, inexplicable things happening in a story, of course! But I feel From is focusing too heavily on presenting these things as a mystery to be solved, when its audience does not have the tools to even try to solve these mysteries. I didn't start watching this show about people being trapped in a weird town because I want to know all the intricacies of the town's weirdness; I started watching because I'm interested in how people cope with being trapped together.

I don't know if I have any coherent conclusion to draw here. 'If you're telling a story that includes mystery elements, be aware of whether you're telling a mystery story or a story about how people cope with mystery', maybe. Either is a valid choice, but, if you're telling a mystery story, you'll probably want to make sure it's actually possible to solve it.

Even if I'm a little unsure of how successful From is as a show, though, the title sequence is pretty cool! Very atmospheric and creepy.
rionaleonhart: top gear: the start button on a bugatti veyron. (going down tonight)
The annual [community profile] threesentenceficathon is currently underway! It's always a lively event.

The second prompt post has just opened; you can find it over here if you want to leave some prompts, or you can poke through the first prompt post in search of inspiration. (The title of this post comes from the fact that there are always a surprising number of Narnia incest prompts, but it isn't intended as a dig at all; I'm glad the Narnia fandom is having a good time!) The three-sentence limit isn't a strict one; you're free to go over.

Below the cut, I've shared my fills from this year's Three-Sentence Ficathon so far. Fandoms: Aladdin, Death Note, Uncharted, Lost, Community.

Three-Sentence Ficathon fills from 2024. )

While I'm at it, here are a few fills from earlier years that I never posted here. Fandoms: Danganronpa, Final Fantasy VII, The Politician.

Three-Sentence Ficathon fills from previous years. )

I might as well also share a Taskmaster drabble I haven't posted to this journal before:

Taskmaster UK/Taskmaster NZ, Greg Davies and Paul Williams, 100 words. )

And that's all for now! You should all go over to the current prompt post and leave lots of prompts for my fandoms your fandoms.
rionaleonhart: death note: light contemplates picking up this mysterious notebook. i'm sure it'll be fine. (here at the crossroads)
It's time for the end-of-year fic meme! I realise December has only just started and it's not impossible I'll write more before the year is out, but I'm impatient and I really enjoy doing this meme.

'What icon should I use for talking about writing?' I thought, before the obvious answer hit me.

Number of fics written in 2023: twenty-four. You can find them in my 'fanfiction (really this time)' tag or on my AO3 account: [archiveofourown.org profile] Riona.

Fandoms: Person of Interest, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Lost, Zanki Zero, Little Hope, The Quarry, Final Fantasy XVI, Death Note, The Last of Us. Five videogame fandoms, two television fandoms, one anime/manga fandom, one film fandom. I went through several distinct fandom phases this year - Person of Interest, then Lost, then The Quarry, then Death Note - so I did a little less rocketing around than usual.

One crossover: Connecting Strands (Person of Interest/Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). While it's not strictly a crossover, there's also Across the Ocean, a Lost fic inspired by Sense8.

End-of-year fic meme, 2023. )

The Quarry might be a bit underrepresented here because I wrote six thematically similar fics for it in the space of a month. I had a blast with all of them, but it can be a little hard to distinguish them in my memory!
rionaleonhart: final fantasy viii: found a draw point! no one can draw... (you're a terrible artist)
November is just around the corner, and I'm not ready for it!

Since 2009, I've tried to write a little every day during the month of November. I'm not attempting National Novel Writing Month; I just have to write at least a hundred words of fiction every day, on any project. It's a small amount, but I don't have any active fic projects at the moment, so I don't know what to write!

Therefore, I'm turning to you guys.

Tell me a fic concept you'd like to see me write, and I'll attempt to write a few lines of it.

If you're not sure which fandoms I'm familiar with, the fandom list on my AO3 account is probably a good place to start. If you have multiple ideas, feel free to make multiple requests and I'll pick which one(s) to write.

There are a handful of things I'd personally prefer not to write - e.g. suicide, sexual content involving characters under fifteen, Teddie from Persona 4 - and I'm hopeless at smut, so you won't have much luck requesting specific sex acts; it'll just end up fading to black. If you're not sure where my boundaries lie, though, you're welcome to suggest your idea anyway; I can always just opt not to write it.

We don't have to know each other well for you to request a ficsnippet; I'm sorely in need of fic concepts for the coming month, so you'd be doing me a favour! So long as you accept that a) there's a chance I won't write your idea and b) my writing may be a bit rusty if you request something I haven't written before or haven't revisited in a while, go ahead and request whatever your heart desires.
rionaleonhart: final fantasy viii: found a draw point! no one can draw... (you're a terrible artist)
It's time to archive some of the recent dreams I've noted down on my phone. As ever, I'm doing this mainly for my own benefit - I don't expect other people to be especially interested in my dreams - but feel free to read if you're curious!

Archiving assorted dreams. )

Finally, here's one outside the cut, for a preview of the sort of thing I dream about:

Dreamt Light Yagami was strangling me with a face mask. Fabric mask, elasticated ear loops. I was on my back; he was on top of me, pressing the stretched elastic down hard against my throat. I'll be honest: it was not a comfortable experience.

Not a great dream, but I have to respect my subconscious mind's characterisation of Light Yagami. No 'I meet my favourite character and he finds me enrapturing' here; I meet my favourite character and he immediately murders me.
rionaleonhart: kingdom hearts: sora, riku and kairi having a friendly chat. (and they returned home)
Here's the second of three entries running through my ten favourite characters of all the time! Caveats: I'm only including characters I've loved for at least ten years, and I've almost certainly forgotten someone essential. I'm going to kick myself when I remember them.

In case you missed it and you're curious, here's the first entry, featuring Elena Fisher, Joshua Kiryu, Squall Leonhart and Light Yagami.

Ellie, The Last of Us

Who is this character and why do you love them? 'Angry disaster' has always been one of my favourite character types. Ellie is an angry, traumatised mess. She's prickly and struggles with letting people get close, but she loves hard when someone slips past her defences. She makes terrible decisions and even worse puns. I became so attached to her while escorting her in The Last of Us; her curiosity, determination and rebellious streak were such a bright spot in a world full of people who'd given up.
Do you ship this character with anyone? I don't think I passionately ship Ellie with anyone, but Ellie/Riley is very cute, Ellie/Abby has interesting potential, and I like the idea of Ellie, Dina and Jesse working out some sort of tentative, awkward polyamorous arrangement.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? Huh, hard to decide! I've written a lot about Ellie. Maybe In Fainter Ink, in which Ellie, Dina and Jesse struggle to settle into a V-shaped polyamorous relationship. A lot of the commenters hated this fic, but it was a fic I wanted to exist; I'm glad I wrote it, even if it wasn't for everyone. I don't know if it's the best fic I've ever written about Ellie, but the negative reactions made me strangely protective of it.
Are there any similar characters you love? Ellie and Abby are very much presented as two sides of the same coin in The Last of Us, Part II, and I'm fond of Abby as well. I could list all the angry disasters I love, but we'd be here all day!
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? I remember being really nervous that The Last of Us, Part II might damage my love of Ellie! I'm pleased to report that I absolutely still love her after playing it. She makes some truly atrocious decisions and does a lot of murdering, but, let's be honest, that's not the sort of thing that's ever made me like a character less.

James Sunderland, Silent Hill 2

Who is this character and why do you love them? I spoiled myself pretty thoroughly for Silent Hill 2 before I actually played it. I read analyses, transcripts, fanfiction. None of it told me how fond of James Sunderland I'd end up becoming. But, when I was playing the game myself - when I was personally trapped and terrified in the town - the character I was playing as felt like my only ally. James and I went through Silent Hill together, and it turns out that that's a pretty intense bonding experience! It helps that the inside of his head is an absolute mess in ways I find really interesting. (I've just remembered that Silent Hill 2 is being remade! I have no idea how to feel about that! Maybe I should at least check it out.)
Do you ship this character with anyone? The relationship between James and his wife Mary is unbearably tragic and makes me very emotional. It was one of the first pairings I ever passionately shipped.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? I've written a ludicrous number of ficlets about James Sunderland, but most of them were written when I was sixteen, so, I'll be honest, they're not my best work. I'm going to say my favourite fic about James is like nails in my feet, one of my more recent Silent Hill 2 fics, in which I attempted to express all my intense feelings about James and Mary.
Are there any similar characters you love? Silent Hill 2 was a very formative game for me, and I think a lot of my favourite character types can be traced back to James Sunderland. I love characters who make terrible mistakes and are overcome by self-loathing; I love characters who are trying to atone for things that can't ever be undone; I love characters who undergo horrible experiences they'll never recover from or be believed about; I love characters who can't trust their own perception of reality. Mike Munroe of Until Dawn is very different from James in demeanour, but he hits three of these four points. Macbeth of the BBC ShakespeaRe-Told adaptation I got weirdly obsessed with in my teens, in which Macbeth is a chef who murders his way into restaurant ownership, also has a lot of overlap.
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? In a surprising parallel to Light Yagami, who is otherwise a very different character, James Sunderland is a person who fucked up unbelievably, couldn't handle it, and ended up rewriting his own reality to create a world in which he hadn't actually fucked up. As they're both on this list of my favourites, that's apparently what I'm into in a character! Denial remains a theme I'm interested in to this day, and it crops up in a lot of my fanfiction.

Jeff Winger, Community

Who is this character and why do you love them? Jeff is charming, cocky, sarcastic, self-obsessed, soft-hearted, low in self-control and an absolute psychological disaster, and it's an extremely fun combination. He wants to be a cool, selfish, uncaring loner, and I love watching that desire clash against his conscience, his fear of abandonment and his intense love for everyone in his study group.
Do you ship this character with anyone? 'It's called chemistry; I have it with everyone,' Jeff said once, and he's right. I ship Jeff with pretty much everyone in the study group, himself included. But I have a particular weakness for Jeff/Annie; the two of them have absolutely ludicrous chemistry. The pairing hadn't occurred to me until 'Debate 109' raised the possibility of them kissing, and suddenly I had never wanted anything more.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? Maybe Despair 101, an incredibly ill-advised Community/Danganronpa crossover. I really enjoyed writing Jeff's reaction when Annie tried to stab him. Sorry, Jeff.
Are there any similar characters you love? I said once that Jeff Winger is the character Jack Shephard of Lost would be if Jack had been written for a sitcom, and I stand by that. They're both a mess of father issues and bad decisions. They both have intense feelings for the people they've somehow ended up a leader to, and they don't entirely know how to deal with those feelings. I'm... not going to write Jack Shephard/Annie Edison, but I'm forced to admit that it crossed my mind while I was thinking about this.
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? I mentioned previously that only one character on this list of my ten favourites had never intentionally killed anyone. If you were wondering, it's Jeff. He's not the most moral character on the list, but he's definitely the character with the lowest bodycount.
rionaleonhart: twewy: joshua kiryu is being fabulously obnoxious and he knows it. (is that so?)
A few times over the years, I've tried to pin down my ten favourite fictional characters and have quickly given it up as an impossible exercise. I love so many characters! How can I possibly narrow it down?

At long last, though, I've actually managed to put a list together! The key was imposing a rule on myself: characters only qualify if I've loved them for at least ten years, so I can be sure that this is a long-lasting affection and I haven't just been blinded by something new and shiny. Sorry, Jack Shephard; you might have been a contender if I'd watched Lost when it first came out.

Fun fact: only one character on the final list has never intentionally killed anyone, and half the characters on the list are outright murderers, which I'm going to define as 'have intentionally killed someone who posed no immediate danger to them'. (Possibly more than half. There's one weird borderline case.)

I'm going to post a little writeup for each of the characters on my 'favourite characters' list, probably in three parts: one post with four characters, two posts with three. Here's the first set!

I'm not posting these in order of preference (I could not possibly pin down an order of preference); the four characters in this post are just the four whose writeups I finished first, and I've listed them in alphabetical order within the post itself.

Elena Fisher, Uncharted

Who is this character and why do you love them? It's strange to think back on it now that Nate and Sully have won me over, but, back when I played the first Uncharted game, I wasn't really a fan of any of the characters. I liked Elena a reasonable amount; I disliked Sully; I was uninterested in Nate. But then Elena kicked her kidnapper out of a helicopter, and I went from 'I like you okay' to 'I think you're wonderful'. And, having won my heart, she made me like everyone else through her interactions with them. She's bold, she's adventurous, she's playful, she refuses to take any shit, and she elevates any other character she's around. She reminds me a little of my sister-in-law, actually.
Do you ship this character with anyone? Elena/Nate is one of my absolute favourite pairings of all time. When I try to think of pairings I ship, my mind will usually go to them first. They play so well off each other, they have fun with each other, and I love how much Nate admires her. I really like that the games allow Nate to show vulnerability around Elena, too.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? Familiar and Strange. I enjoyed Uncharted 4, but I was hoping it'd focus more on the established characters rather than newcomer Sam. This fic envisions how Uncharted 4 might have played out if Elena had been more involved from the start.
Are there any similar characters you love? Teresa Lisbon of The Mentalist is very like Elena, I think. I was actually half-debating whether to put Lisbon or Elena on this list, but another character from The Mentalist was on the list already, and I thought it made sense to keep it to one character per canon. (Yes, I'm talking about Patrick Jane. I don't know why I'm trying to play coy. Of course I'm talking about Patrick Jane.)
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? Elena poking fun at you while you play Crash Bandicoot is my favourite moment in the entire Uncharted series, and I think Naughty Dog should come out with a full-length Elena Fisher Mocks Your Videogame Skills Simulator. I can tell you right now that it would be the best game ever made.

Joshua Kiryu, The World Ends with You

Who is this character and why do you love them? Joshua Kiryu is an obnoxious little shit who causes problems on purpose. When I first met him, I hated him; I just wanted Shiki back! But Joshua was just so unapologetically and gleefully awful that somehow he ended up winning me over. He's so much fun!
Do you ship this character with anyone? I'm a big fan of Neku/Joshua in which Joshua spends the entire time driving Neku up the wall. Neku's feelings for Joshua are so complicated and interesting.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? Select Player Two, in which Joshua drags Neku into another round of the Reapers' Game. It is a blast to write Joshua being as annoying as possible at all times.
Are there any similar characters you love? Like Joshua, Beatrice of Umineko: When They Cry gleefully launches herself into ensuring everyone has a terrible time. There's also Nagito Komaeda of Danganronpa 2; Komaeda isn't quite as intentionally awful as Joshua, but he definitely inspires similar 'holy shit, why are you like this and why do I have to put up with you?' feelings in the people around him.
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? My current laptop is named Joshua, after Joshua Kiryu, because it's tiny and silver and pissed me off the moment I met it. It made me jump through so many hoops if I wanted to save files onto the hard drive by default instead of onto the cloud!

Squall Leonhart, Final Fantasy VIII

Who is this character and why do you love them? Squall Leonhart was the first character I ever really connected with. As a deeply socially awkward thirteen-year-old, I was shocked to discover this character whose inner thoughts were just like mine; he didn't want to hurt other people, but he didn't know how to talk to them. I felt that this game understood me, and I wasn't used to feeling understood.
Do you ship this character with anyone? Squall/Zell was the first pairing I ever wrote fanfiction for, at the age of thirteen, and I'm fond of it to this day. There are echoes of Squall/Zell in Ryuji/Joker, Yu/Yosuke and Prompto/Noctis, all of which I ship enormously. Apparently I have a weakness for pairing the quiet protagonist up with his energetic, loyal, compassionate friend who very openly admires him.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? With These Signs Upon Our Souls, a Final Fantasy VIII/Final Fantasy XIII crossover, in which the characters of Final Fantasy VIII become l'Cie. It's the longest continuous story I've ever written, and I'm proud of myself for finishing it. (It's 26,000 words, which I know isn't actually that long in the grand scheme of things, but it's long for me!)
Are there any similar characters you love? Other characters who are socially inept in a way I find relatable include Noctis Lucis Caelum of Final Fantasy XV and Mark Corrigan of Peep Show. I also love Lightning of Final Fantasy XIII; I find her brand of social ineptitude less personally relatable, but I do think she's generally very similar to Squall.
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? If you were planning to erase my memories of every fictional character I'd ever loved and you were only letting me keep one, that would be a weird thing to do, but I'd keep Squall. I don't think I'd consider him my favourite character of all time, but he's definitely the character who's most important to me.

Light Yagami, Death Note

Who is this character and why do you love them? Light is a terrible kid who discovered an untraceable murder method and decided to kill off all the criminals to make the world worship him, and somehow I find everything about him enchanting. I love watching him come up with convoluted plots that screw over everyone around him, himself occasionally included. I love watching him firmly convince himself that he's totally, totally justified in the terrible things he does. I love that his ego will never let him resist a challenge or an opportunity to rub his victory in someone's face. I love the tiny hints of warmth that we occasionally catch glimpses of - his love for his family, his fondness for Ryuk - and I love that, even if that softer side exists, it's not enough to stop him from going too far; he's absolutely prepared to bury it if he has to.
Do you ship this character with anyone? I ship Light Yagami with himself, hard, in every possible variant. Light interacting with another version of himself in dreams or visions? Perfect. Light encountering an actual duplicate of himself, and the two of him attempting to seduce and murder each other, because they can't both be gods of the new world but they can't just write 'Light Yagami' in the Death Note? Magnificent. Light just masturbating while thinking about how great he is? Beautiful. I apologise for posting yet another entry about Light Yagami masturbating.
What's your favourite fic you've written about this character? Shackles, in which Light and L are toxic soulmates. 'They're both in love with each other, but they will not hesitate to destroy each other' turned out to be a fun dynamic to work with! I'm pleasantly surprised by how enthusiastically this fic was received, too; the Death Note fandom is remarkably active, considering that the canon ended over a decade ago.
Are there any similar characters you love? It's actually hard to think of anyone like Light. Light's not the sort of character you usually see committing atrocities. He's not an outcast, he hasn't had a hard life; he's a golden boy. He's smart, he's polite, he's popular; he's used to being praised and admired. He works hard, but he knows he'd still beat everyone without really trying. And, because he's gone through life without ever truly being challenged, he assumes he can murder thousands of people and get away with it. (EDIT: Wait, Akechi! Goro Akechi from Persona 5, particularly the expanded Royal edition, is very Light in both appearance and personality.)
Anything else you'd like to say about this character? It can be tricky to talk about liking Light Yagami, because some parts of the fandom can interpret 'Light is my favourite character' as 'I think Light was right'. No! Light was wrong! Everything he does is terrible! That's why I love him so much! I keep getting his musical song 'Where Is the Justice?' stuck in my head, because it's a banger, but it doesn't feel great when I catch myself singing 'where is the justice when the guilty all go free? why don't we lock them up and throw away the key?'
rionaleonhart: final fantasy x-2: the sun is rising, yuna looks to the future. (look at yourself)
It's time for a roundup of ficsnippets I've posted here and there!

Silent Hill 2, James/Maria, 100 words, prompt: nonconned by dead spouse (non-explicit) )

Your Turn to Die, Keiji/Sara, 200 words, Sara seeks a distraction. )

The Quarry, 150 words, Laura sees Travis shopping post-game. )

The Quarry, 300 words, prompt: Travis has to interact with Laura's family. )

I just caught myself thinking 'when's the last time I wrote for a pairing that isn't a huge mess?' and then 'wait, Jack/Kate from Lost, not that long ago' and then 'hold on, Jack/Kate is absolutely a huge mess.'
rionaleonhart: final fantasy xiii: lightning pays intense attention to you. (speak carefully)
My brother Joseph gave me the first season of True Detective on disc for Christmas. 'I didn't know if you'd watched it before,' he said, 'so I searched the tags on your blog to see whether you'd talked about it. I think you'll like it. It's about two men having a very fraught, intense working relationship.'

The title sequence is extremely cool! Striking cinematography throughout the show, too.

More thoughts under the cut! These thoughts were written while watching, so some of my feelings change over time.

Thoughts on season one of True Detective. )

A high-quality show! Good tension, acting and writing; gorgeous cinematography. I don't think I'm the audience, and I don't mean it's not my thing; I mean it was made with a particular audience in mind, and I don't think I'm part of that audience. An uncomfortable and unwelcoming watch, but well made and interesting. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

The show had a bit of a disadvantage because it's the first thing I've watched since finishing Lost, which I loved a frankly unreasonable amount.

To be honest, though, my brother is indirectly the reason I watched Lost as well! I wasn't in a position to start True Detective straight away, but Joseph's 'it's about two men having a very fraught, intense working relationship' comment made me think 'I do like that sort of thing', which led me to watch Person of Interest, which led me to watch Lost. So, Joseph, if you see this, I have to thank you for not only giving me True Detective but accidentally introducing me to two other shows I hugely enjoyed.

When I have a fic idea, I’ll usually scribble it down in the back of my diary. It’s time to switch diaries again, so I’m going to carry on the tradition I started last year!

This post lists all the fic ideas at the back of my 2022-23 diary. If I’ve written the fic, I’ll include a link to it. If I’ve started the fic, I’ll share a snippet. If I haven’t started it, I’ll write at least a hundred words on the spot.

First of all, here are the fics I’ve written in full. Fandoms: The Book of Mormon, Life Is Strange, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Do Revenge, Person of Interest, Lost, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope. There may be spoilers for these canons below the cut.

Written fics from my 2022-23 diary. )

Next, let’s look at the works in progress (or at least the works that were started; I’m not sure they’re actively progressing). Fandoms: The X-Files, Silent Hill, Hypnospace Outlaw, Final Fantasy VIII, Lost, Animorphs. There may be spoilers for these canons below the cut.

In-progress fics from my 2022-23 diary. )

Finally, it’s time for the fic ideas I haven’t touched and now have to write something for. I’m a little intimidated by this category, but let’s see how it goes.

Fandoms: The Book of Mormon, The X-Files, Beacon Pines, Person of Interest, Community, Lost, Scrubs, Silent Hill. There may be spoilers for these canons below the cut.

2022-23 fics I hadn't started... until now. )

I’m glad I started doing this! Most of these will probably never become full fics, but it’s good to at least make a start on these concepts, rather than letting them languish eternally in my old diaries.
