Just Enough Time To Learn How To Blow Yourself Up.
Finished season four of Lost! Here are my notes on the three-part season finale.
I suppose Aaron is the last of the Oceanic Six? I did so much speculation! (I considered but largely dismissed the Aaron possibility previously; I cut a few paragraphs of speculation on the Six out of my 'Eggtown' notes because they weren't very interesting to read, but they included the line 'Aaron was... technically on the plane, but, if he made it back to civilisation, he may not be counted as one of the Six.')
Bless Hurley for immediately introducing Sayid to his family.
Wait, do they have any way to feed Aaron now that Claire's gone missing? He's not old enough to have anything but breast milk or formula, and I doubt formula is an option.
Awww, the other survivors came to Hugo's birthday party! And to support Jack at the funeral!
I'm excited that Jack's finally learnt Claire is his half-sister! And, God, there's so much to process in this moment: that Claire is his half-sister, that he can't talk to anyone but the other survivors about the fact that he actually got to know Claire, that Aaron is his nephew, that Claire's mother has a living grandson and he can't tell her.
Some great facial acting from Matthew Fox in that scene. It's consistently a really strong point for him, and quite possibly part of the reason I'm so drawn to Jack; of course I seek out the character who's really good at looking like he's been punched in the gut and go 'yes, that one, that's my favourite.' I often find myself rewinding to study the nuances of his facial expressions in emotional moments.
Oh, wow. I realised straight away that Jack's reluctance to be around Aaron came from knowing he was descended from Jack's father. It's only hitting me now, though, several hours later, that Jack said 'you're not even related to him' to Kate in the knowledge that he himself is related to Aaron. Which doesn't make it acceptable; it was an atrocious thing to say! Jack's the worst sometimes! But it adds a new and interesting dimension.
Oh, hey, we get something semi-concrete to hang the post-island timeline on! By the time Jack is an absolute wreck, just the way I like him (beard excepted), they've been off the island for three years.
Feels weird to be cheering for the Others, but I'll take them over these military arseholes from the boat any day.
heck yeah Sayid get him ♥
Is Christian Shephard... the personification of the island? It would explain why he has a connection to so many of the survivors, while simultaneously raising several million more questions.
I WAS NOT EXPECTING 'MOVING THE ISLAND' TO MEAN THE ISLAND JUST FUCKING DISAPPEARING
Given my fondness for characters bonding in hopeless situations, I'm intrigued by Jack, Kate, Sun, Hurley, Sayid, Frank and Desmond being stranded on an inflatable raft, no land in sight.
(Aaron is also there, of course, but that just makes me a bit sad, because this particular hopeless situation is especially hopeless for a baby. My instinct is to want fanfiction that draws their time out on the raft to be much longer, but it's hard to draw it out by any real length without dooming Aaron. I'm still very concerned by the fact that they have no way to feed him!)
I haven't talked much about Frank, but I like him and I appreciate him. Thanks for getting a handful of characters off the island alive, Frank; I know it wasn't easy! Good work from Penny as well.
I love that, on finally stepping onto inhabited shores, the survivors' first instinct is to touch each other, to put arms around each other. Special mention to Sayid putting his arm around Kate and pulling her in to lean on his shoulder. (Sayid/Kate is the best Kate pairing, frankly. I can picture the look Jack would give me for saying that, and it's cracking me up. Sorry, Jack!)
Oh, hey, I actually correctly guessed who was in that coffin! Pretty much solely from Jack responding to the 'friend or family?' question with 'neither'; I felt it had to be someone from the flight because he tried to contact Kate about the death, and Locke's pretty much the only significant fellow survivor Jack wouldn't describe as a friend. My condolences,
facethestrange and
zarla.
Once again, I have no idea what to expect from future episodes, but I'm enjoying the ride!

Definitely agree re military arseholes. I always thought the Others had a lot of potential that wasn't explored at the time, and they were among my favourites to write and try and explore that myself - it's probably going to be easier to elaborate on that when you've seen S5, because some of my theories related to events of that season and I won't spoil it.

Thank you for the interesting behind-the-scenes information, and for holding back on spoilers! I'm looking forward to hearing your theories.

That's one thing I'm pretty sure I didn't know about S4. :D Like, it's still possible that I did, but it's unlikely, because it sounds too SOFT to forget!
I'm fine with Locke's death for some canon and mostly-canon reasons (I also have the 'my headcanon is totally canon' thing going on with this show sometimes :D).

It's the correct way to watch it!
