Then We Arrived At Our Hotel Room, Which Technically Had Only One Bed.
I was in Manchester for a wedding over the weekend, which entailed a couple of long train journeys! To pass the time on the journey, I revived one of my favourite memes on my Tumblr:
Give me any two (or more) characters I’m familiar with, and I’ll tell you how they would cope in an ‘oh no, there’s only one bed’ scenario!
Here are the results! (You can also find my responses from the last time I did this over here.) As before, my responses exist on a spectrum from ‘general thoughts’ to ‘tiny ficlet’. The Danganronpa, Hundred Line and Omori scenarios contain spoilers.
futuresoon: if you're doing only one bed again then it's my moral obligation to ask for eitaku
If it’s in the original timeline, Takumi scratches the back of his neck. “I… guess we should share the bed…?”
Eito hesitates for just an instant before pasting on a smile and saying, “Of course, Takumi!”
They lie facing away from each other, and neither of them gets much sleep. Takumi lies there, heart thumping, unable to stop blushing. He’s intensely aware of Eito behind him. Why is he feeling so weird??
Eito, meanwhile, spends the whole night just seething. He can’t fucking believe this is happening to him. This is the most revolting thing anyone has ever had to endure.
If it’s in a later timeline, Takumi stares at the one bed, frozen and horrified.
“Oh, don’t worry about me,” Eito says, cheerfully. “I’ll just sleep on the floor. The idea of climbing into bed with your repulsive body honestly makes me want to throw up ♥.”
Eito sleeps perfectly well on the floor. Takumi doesn’t sleep at all.
drawsaurus: Only one bed prompt: Peter/harry/mj (canon of your choice) (I went with Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 for PS5.)
“Looks like you lovebirds get the bed,” Harry says. “I’ll just lie on the floor and think about how single I am.”
It’s said jokingly; Peter doesn’t think there’s real resentment there. But he feels pretty bad about it, all the same. “It’s fine if you two want to share.”
“Uh,” Harry says. “Me sharing a bed with your girlfriend? No offence, but isn’t that kind of insane?”
“Boys, boys,” MJ says, coming up between them. She puts one hand on Peter’s shoulder, one on Harry’s. “We could do this whole macho who-gets-to-sleep-on-the-floor thing, or we could actually use our eyes and see that the bed’s big enough for all three of us.”
When she puts it like that, it’s hard to argue.
Peter wakes in the night to see Harry sleeping almost face-down, his hand resting on MJ’s stomach. He just watches for a while, having a lot of feelings he doesn’t know how to place.
keltena: I'm so haunted by the question of what "only one bed" would even entail for Beatrice and Battler, I feel compelled to plant it in your mind as well.
There’s no pre-sleep discussion in this scenario; Battler just goes to sleep on his own, as usual, and wakes up to find Beatrice lying next to him. He squawks and falls out of the bed.
“How the hell did you get in here?” he demands, scrambling to his feet. Did something happen last night? Nothing happened last night, right? “The door’s locked!”
“While you were sleeping,” Beatrice informs him, smirking, “your bedroom suddenly filled with dancing lights. They turned into golden butterflies, which fluttered down onto your bed and took the shape of a person.” She spreads her hands. “And here I am!”
Goddammit. Why did he even ask?
He spends the next two hours arguing with her about how that’s obviously nonsense.
goforthequill: Sooo, you did say we could fit more than two people in 'only one bed', and didn't specify if there was a limit... Let's go with all the 'Danganronpa 1' survivors having to share a bed?
Obviously, as the heir to his family’s empire, Togami is entitled to the bed. He attempts to shoo the peasants out of the room.
“Hey, you can’t just take the bed!” Asahina objects.
“Naegi,” Togami says, “explain to these idiots why I will be sleeping in the bed.”
Naegi hesitates. “I - I mean, I’m okay sleeping on the floor, but… the bed’s big enough for two people, right? Maybe that’d make more sense than just one person?”
“Ridiculous,” Togami says. “The floor is certainly large enough for all five of you.”
“I’d be h-happy just to sleep at your feet, Master,” Fukawa mumbles: a declaration that everyone, by silent consensus, pretends not to hear.
“I suggest we decide this with a game of shogi, Togami-kun,” Kirigiri says. “If you win, you can have the bed to yourself. If you lose, I will take the bed, with another person of my choice.”
“I won’t lose,” Togami says. “You might as well accept my victory now.”
Kirigiri raises an eyebrow. “You don’t accept my challenge?”
Togami folds his arms. “Of course I accept it. I’m just informing you that it’s a waste of time.”
The shogi set is in an adjoining room, and Naegi follows them to watch the game. A part of him is nervous: what if Kirigiri chooses him to share the bed with her?
It’s stupid to think about this, right? She’ll choose one of the girls. Asahina, probably.
Kirigiri wins the game, and Naegi half holds his breath, waiting to find out who she’ll be sharing with. If she names him, maybe he’ll just give his place up to Asahina; he’s not sure he’d be able to take the stress of lying in the same bed as Kirigiri.
He never learns what her plan was. They return to the bedroom to find Hagakure sprawled across the entire bed, snoring loudly.
In the end, Togami stays up and reads; if he can’t have the bed, he doesn’t intend to sleep at all. Fukawa hovers nearby, watching him. Kirigiri sleeps on the couch. Naegi and Asahina both sleep on the floor; they end up shifting close together in the night, which Naegi is a little embarrassed about when he wakes up.
doreyg: Hinata/Kuzuryu for the only one bed meme? :D
“I’ll sleep on the floor,” Kuzuryuu says.
“Are you sure?” Hinata asks. “We could probably share. You don’t take up that much—”
He catches sight of Kuzuryuu’s expression and falls silent straight away. Oh, fuck. He’s going to be murdered.
There are a few seconds of terrible silence.
“I’m sleeping,” Kuzuryuu says, quiet and dangerous, “on the fucking floor.”
Anonymous: If you are still doing the only one bed meme: Mahiru Koizumi and Mikan Tsumiki please?
“Are you okay sleeping on the side against the wall?” Koizumi asks.
No answer. She turns around to see Tsumiki settling down on the bare floorboards, shivering.
“What are you doing?” Koizumi demands.
Tsumiki jolts to her feet. “I - I’m sorry!”
“The bed is big enough for both of us,” Koizumi says. “It’s a waste of space for anyone to sleep on the floor.”
Tsumiki flushes. “I’m sorry I’m a waste of space.”
“No, I—” Koizumi sighs, presses her hand to her forehead. “Just get into the bed, okay?”
Tsumiki presses herself against the wall once she’s in the bed, obviously trying to make herself as small as possible. “You can take up more room, y'know,” Koizumi tells her, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference.
It takes Koizumi a while to get to sleep; it bothers her that Tsumiki obviously isn’t resting comfortably. She just can’t find the right words to make Tsumiki understand that she deserves the bed just as much as anyone else does.
goforthequill: It's cool that you're doing the 'only one bed' scenarios again, thank you for offering! I shall ask: Daisuke and Satoshi from 'DNAngel' (and technically Dark and Krad as well)
Daisuke is expecting some kind of discussion about who’ll be sleeping where, but Satoshi doesn’t say a word. The moment he sees there’s only one bed, he starts settling down on the floor.
“Don’t you want the bed?” Daisuke asks after a moment, hesitantly.
“I’m fine,” Satoshi says.
A pause. It’s tempting to just take the bed, if Satoshi’s offering. But Daisuke feels a little bad about it.
“I mean,” Daisuke says, “we could probably both—”
“No,” Satoshi says. Cutting across him, startling him into silence.
Neither of them brings it up again.
ymas00: If, by any chance, you'd feel up to revisiting an old fandom: Top Gear? Any combination
“Jeremy,” James says, at which point he runs out of words. He holds out his hands, in a gesture intended to convey a general sense of ‘why?’
“What are you doing in my bedroom?” Jeremy asks, groggily.
“I think you should answer my question about your bedmate first.”
“You haven’t asked a question.”
“If I happened to ask a question,” James says, “what do you imagine it might be?”
They look at each other for a moment.
“There was only one bed,” Jeremy says.
“Yes,” James says. “I imagine the crew made that booking because you’re only one person.”
“Well, where else was she going to sleep?”
James closes his eyes for a moment. When he opens them, there is still a Ford GT in the hotel bed.
If 'in’ is the correct word. Half the bed has collapsed under its weight. James knows for a fact that this scenario was not taken into account in the episode budget, although, to be honest, perhaps it should have been.
“How did you get it up the stairs?” he asks, with reluctant curiosity.
Jeremy frowns. “You know, I’ve got no idea.”
tweetymcbastardface: Harmony Cobel and Helena Eagan. Why would this even happen? Well, that's your problem now.
“Harmony Cobel will be resuming her duties at Lumon,” Helena says, into the camera. “Although she previously had a similar role, that role was interrupted. Therefore, the new manager testing protocol will be carried out as usual.”
She turns to Cobel. “Do you understand the testing protocol?”
“Yes,” Cobel says. Her back straight, her hands clasped together in front of her. “The new manager must share a bed with the Eagan heir.”
“Do you understand the purpose of the testing protocol?”
“Yes. The new manager must show probity in the face of temptation. I understand that, if I make any sexual overtures towards the Eagan heir, I will fail the test.”
“Acceptable,” Helena says. “Testing begins.”
She and Cobel climb simultaneously into a large, spotlessly white bed and pull the covers over themselves.
“What the fuck?” Helly mutters, watching the footage.
Anonymous: For the 'only one bed' meme: how about Sonic and Tails from 'Sonic the Hedgehog'?
Sonic and Tails agree to share the bed, but they’re not ready to sleep yet; they’ve got too much energy. They stay up late, sitting beside the bed and talking.
They end up falling asleep there on the floor, Sonic leaning against Tails, whose tails are curled around him. The bed goes to waste, but at least the resulting situation is pretty cute.
quonit37: Ouuuhggggg well if ur Asking. Then. I liek Sunny/Basil pls :3
It’s not that there’s only one bed, exactly. There’s definitely at least one unoccupied bed in the house. But it’s That Night, and, after everything, they don’t know what else to do.
They crawl into Sunny’s bed together. Sunny buries himself in Basil’s arms, shaking. He can feel Basil shaking even harder.
They’re not going to get any sleep. Of course they aren’t. But they have to - they have to spend the night in bed, they have to look like they’ve slept. They aren’t supposed to know anything yet.
His parents are going to find her in the morning. He can’t stop thinking about it.
None of this feels real. He presses his face against Basil’s collarbone and silently begs to wake up.
the-red-thread-that-strangles: C team for the only one bed meme please?
Carlos is pretty confused to wake up with Akane sleeping against his chest and Junpei against his back. He doesn’t remember how this happened, and it’s… really not something he was expecting.
To be honest, though, it’s kind of nice. He’s been under a lot of stress, for a long time. It feels like lying here with them is helping to ease that, just a little.
A moment later, Junpei wakes up and starts demanding to know why the fuck Carlos is in bed with Akane, which makes things slightly less relaxing. Carlos’s first instinct is to leave the bed, to defuse the situation.
Turns out it’s impossible to leave the bed, because it’s directly surrounded by walls; it’s essentially a bed in a box. One of the walls has a locked door; unlocking it is the only apparent way to escape the bed. If they fail to solve the puzzles surrounding them in this confined space, an announcement informs them, the walls will close in and crush them.
Understandably, that becomes their main concern, and the awkwardness of being in bed together is largely forgotten. If they manage to escape, though, Akane will occasionally bring it up to tease the other two.
corviiids: i HAVE to ask about souyo p4 for the only one bed meme.
Yu climbs into the bed.
“Hey, wait!” Yosuke protests. “You can’t just decide that you’re getting the bed. Shouldn’t we, like, play rock-paper-scissors for it or something?”
They look at each other for a moment.
“Get in the bed,” Yu says.
Yosuke turns six different shades in quick succession. “With you???”
Halfway through Yosuke’s sputtering, incoherent argument about how obviously it’d be ridiculous for them to share a bed, Yu falls asleep.
When he wakes in the night, he finds Yosuke on the other side of the bed, lying over the covers, half curled up with his back to Yu.
Yosuke’s weirdly quiet for the whole of the next day, and he blushes every time Yu tries to talk to him.
runaway-ramblings: These are such fun scenarios! Can I ask for the "only one bed" meme with Sara Chiduoin and Sou Hiyori?
There’s a long silence as they look at the one bed.
“Well,” Sara says at last, smiling tightly, “if there’s nowhere else to sleep, I guess we’ll just have to share.” You’re definitely going to kill me in the night, she’s thinking.
“Of course,” Sou agrees, with an equally fake smile. You’re definitely going to kill me in the night, he’s thinking.
They lie as far apart as possible, with their backs to each other. Neither of them sleeps.
goforthequill: How about Noelle and Susie from 'Deltarune?'
The moment Noelle realises there’s only one bed between her and Susie, she passes out on the floor.
She wakes to find that Susie has put her in the bed and is snoring loudly next to her. Noelle lies there, blushing furiously, silently dying inside. She feels like she’s going to explode.
Noelle stays agonisingly still; she cannot, under any circumstances, be allowed to brush against Susie. Susie, it turns out, has a tendency to thrash around in her sleep and is therefore difficult to avoid.
It’s hard to say whether Noelle actually manages to get to sleep or whether she just passes out again when Susie’s thigh knocks against hers. In either case, she does not feel rested in the morning.
It’s the best night of her life.
If there are any characters you’d like to see confronted with a one-bed situation, feel free to make requests in the comments!
