I have been thinking about the Ianto/Gwen comment I made a few entries ago, and I have decided that the ideal solution to any A/B versus A/C 'shipwar may very well actually be having B and C run off together. Wilson/Cameron would be adorable; they could cuddle up and lament the fact that House ruined their lives together. Tifa/Aerith is obviously brilliant. Riku/Kairi makes complete sense. Rinoa/Every Character of Final Fantasy VIII Except Squall makes less sense, but I suppose it would be a pleasant change from all the Rinoa-bashing. (Seriously, Rinoa isn't even one of my favourite characters, but I can't go near VIII fanfiction any more because the treatment of her is so appalling. Unless it's written by you, of course. You're all great.)

Without realising it, I tended to go for the B/C pairings in my older fandoms. FOR INSTANCE:

Digimon! The two big ships were Tai/Matt and Joe/Izzy. I shipped Tai/Izzy!
Naruto! The two big ships were Naruto/Sasuke and Iruka/Kakashi. I shipped Kakashi/Sasuke!

...Okay, those are the only two examples I can think of. BUT WHATEVER.

(This wouldn't really work for PotC, though, as the two big ships are Jack/Will and Will/Elizabeth, and since Jack and Elizabeth are nearly canon anyway, would we end up with Will/Will?)

I was in an RP once where I played FF7 Aeris and someone else played Kingdom Hearts Aerith; we made the distinction in names for our sanity, and it's stuck in my head since.

I'm not in fandoms with shipwars like that much anymore, although I do find a certain odd amount of appeal in Tomoyo/Chii from Tsubasa, for some reason. As for my old fandoms, Jenna/Mia from Golden Sun is vastly favorable to both Isaac/Jenna and Isaac/Mia, and it's more interesting than either one as well.

I guess for Phoenix Wright you would have the B/C/D/E/F/G/etc. orgy, considering as everyone gets shipped with Phoenix.

You see, in a situation like that I don't think I'd be able to resist attempting to work towards eventual Aeris/Aerith. I think it's probably for the best that I don't roleplay.

That was why I didn't suggest Harry/Ron as a solution to the Harry/Hermione and Hermione/Ron 'shipwars; in my mind, it's got to be Harry/Hermione/Ron or nothing.

A/B/C is frequently a rather good solution, but B/C has a higher chance of irritating the 'shippers, and I think that makes it more fun. Because I am a mildly evil person.

Harry/Ginny or Harry/Hermione would be Ginny/Hermione. Remus/Tonks and Remus/Sirius would be Tonks/Sirius (yay for May/December incest?).

Er, so that would be Sam/Gene and Sam/Annie as Gene/Annie (the poor girl)?

Scrubs ends up with stuff like JD/Carla, Elliot/Cox, Jordan/JD, and Turk/Elliot.

Well, as first-cousin marriage is legal here, Tonks/Sirius wouldn't really be considered incest. (There was that 'Tonks is moping... I wonder whether she was in love with Sirius?' bit in Half-Blood Prince, wasn't there? Did all the Americans go 'UM, WHAT' at that?)

Ahahaha, Gene/Annie! It - wait, that could actually work. Although, as you say, poor Annie. Also, Elliot/Cox is a pairing I've always sort of secretly liked.

Ah, the Aeris/Aerith Controversy...

See, there's a major problem with romanization of Japanese. Now, let me show off a little.

Aeris/Aerith's name in Japanese is エアリス which, following the Hepburn romanization system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepburn_romanization), comes out as EARISU.

In Japanese the Katakana ス when used for foreign words can be used for both S and TH. In fact, Sephiroth's name in Katakana is セフィロス (SEFIROSU), but since it refers to the Qabbalah and there is in fact an expression in Latin alphabet for it they had no problem with his name.

On the other hand, when they were promoting the game in Japan they wrote AERITH when it was in Latin alphabet.

So, basically, both versions are acceptable, and while I'm more attached to Aeris, Aerith is probably the right one.

I think I also heard that her name was supposed to be reminiscent of 'Earth' (to contrast with 'Cloud'), in which case 'Aerith' would certainly be more correct. But I don't remember where that came from. It may not have been a very reliable source.

Aeris for Original Game Canon, Aerith for Kingdom Hearts and possible the compilation. Now, if they'd just remake FFVII with shiny graphic whore bait, they could fix this problem.

I don't know. I got a lot of people pushing Rose/Martha as the solution to shipwars, and it didn't appeal to me at all. Normally I'm big on femmeslash, even semi-random pairings, but I just don't like Rose/Martha. Or Rose/Reinette.

Sam Carter/Daniel Jackson - Adorable, but I think of them as far too sibling-y to be really comfortable with this. Incest! Adorable geeky incest!

Annie Cartwright/Gene Hunt - Er. This would be... I don't know what it would be, but it would be something. Challenging. For all parties.

Cooper Hawkes/Nathan West - It's the only pairing with more snark and punching than Seifer/Zell.

Kylen Celia/Shane Vansen - Not only would they both have PTSD, specifically AI-related PTSD, they could bond over what a flake Nathan could be. And then Shane would go kill something and Kylen would curl up in a corner and read.

The games are Japanese, right? I don't think there is a "th" sound in Japanese. I think the name would be something like ae-ri-su? Does this help? Am I anal now? Can I pack any more questions into this comment? ONLY TIME WILL TELL.

That's the whole origin of the translation problem, yup! :D

Sephiroth is, in Japanese, pronounced something like Se-fu-ro-su (I would have...go back and listen to something, but that's my best guess), and what not. But it's still Sephiroth.

The translation of Aeris/Aerith just got a different romanization because it's not an actual word. So it's weird.
