I have now watched the pilot episode of Supernatural! My profound and important thoughts:

- SAM AND DEAN'S PARENTS ARE CALLED JOHN AND MARY. This obviously means that they are the children of Dr. Watson and his wife. Mary Watson certainly died young, didn't she? Yes, all right, their surname is Winchester, and they're not British, and Supernatural is set about a hundred years after Holmes and Watson were off having adventures, but these are minor incongruities. Having Sam and Dean be in some way related to John Watson would make a bizarre sort of sense. Because, you know, tracking down criminals and demon-hunting are basically the same thing.

- That scene in which the Impala is driving along with one broken headlight to loud driving music made my mind immediately leap to Withnail and I. Dean would, I suspect, be Withnail. Although I don't imagine that particular duo would be quite as good at hunting demons as the Winchester boys are.

- It was probably a mistake for me to start reading Supernatural fanfic when I was still only just getting into the show, because now I keep getting confused between what actually happened in an episode and what was just in this fic. (Incestuous overtones - wanttobeatree linked me to it as part of her apparent evil plot to get me into Wincest - but bloody good, even if you're not a particular incest fan. It asks the question 'what if only one of the two is interested in sexualising the relationship?', and the answer is just heartbreaking.)

- Sam is adorable, isn't he? Adorable. And I'm already recognising a 'BAD THINGS HAPPEN WHEN THE WINCHESTER BOYS ARE NOT TOGETHER. BAD THINGS' pattern. Of course, bad things frequently happen when the Winchester boys are together, but not quite to the same extent.

The fans are batshit? I don't think I've heard about this! All the Supernatural fans I know are on my friendslist, so of course the ones I've encountered have been lovely and only insane in the good way. In what way are they batshit?

I'm so glad you're getting into supernatural! I had a look at some of the comments, and I don't think the fans are any more batshit than any other fandom. There are loonies everywhere. I do think that spn has some AMAZINGLY good writers. The best I've ever seen in fanfic, whether you're reading wincest or not. The abundance of both angst and crack fic is off the charts. All probably very good reasons as to why I got sucked in in the first place.

Now I am imaging Dean getting absolutely shitfaced drunk with Withnail, lamenting his dead father Dr Watson, and Sam sitting in the corner with I shaking their heads.

It's great to read some good angstfic again, I have to admit; almost all of the fanfiction I've read has been Top Gear for the past year-and-a-half, and that's a fandom in which serious angst very rarely works. I seem to already be developing rather specific Supernatural-fic tastes (these tastes appear, slightly unfortunately, to focus on 'WHEN INCEST GOES WRONG').

And I am always happy to share the alarming crossover mental images!

Then you're in the right place! Don't get me wrong, most times Sam and Dean are going to walk off into the sunset together, all doubts and fears alleviated, everything happy and skippy and jumpy, but there's plenty of relatively *snerk* realistic scenarios out there. Seriously heartbreaking stuff when it's done right.

If I may be so bold as to make a few recommendations...? nutkin and gretazreta are excellent writers where things don't always go easy for the boys. fleshflutter and ygrawn may tickle your fancy. Into the White by nu_breed is some pretty screwed up Sam/Dean. Threads (http://juicephine.livejournal.com/81116.html) by juicephine is a when incest goes wrong type fic. There's lots out there. I get the feeling you would probably really enjoy kroki_refur who writes very clever twisty tales and cracky angst on occasion, which is a strange and wonderful place to be. Have fun!

I second that. The level of fanfic in the SPN fandom is amazing. The only other fandom I ever came across that had such good writers was The X-Files back in the day.

There is a sizable group of batshit crazy people in the SPN fandom, largely centred on potthead, ckll and supernatural_tv. There was a big feud last year - it got rather nasty, people formed sides, it all got a bit crazy. I just sat back and watched the wank.

I'm so glad you're enjoying Supernatural, because I love Sam and Dean, and you could totally bring in Pierce the Zombie and it would be totally consistent and plausible within the show's internal continuity! How awesome?

Also, no matter how batshit crazy she may or may not be (I, of course, wouldn't know), ckll has some astonishingly pretty things in her profile. I need to not save that incredibly lovely picture of Jared wrapping his arms around Jensen from behind, because from there it's a slippery slope to becoming a mad incest and actorslash fangirl. Haha, Supernatural is the fandom that got me into RPS and incest fic, both of which had majorly squicked me before. It's a bad bad thing and a very slippery slope. And yes, those manips are lovely! And it doesn't help that Jensen and Jared quite clearly adore one another and are constantly hugging and mauling one another.

It's not so much that either potthead and ckll are batshit, more that wank and batshitness erupted from their little feud, which had something to do with someone stealing someone else's community and then lying about it etc etc.

Fandom legend has it that SPN was conceived as a way of defusing the homoerotic tension inherent in the 'two guys do stuff' motif by making them brothers. Actually, it has lead to a huge upswing in (a) RPS for those who want to picture them together but are squicked by incest, (b) incest!fic. The SPN fandom has been the first in which these two elements have formed large sub-genres.

That is all I have to say at the moment, since I have been up since way before the sun and so my brain is mush. Also, I do not read SPN fanfiction, and so I don't have any recs.

Okay okay I lied. Check out zionsstarfish. There should be a link in her sidebar that says 'my SPN' (right under 'my HP', which you should also ckeck out if you're into H/D). She's got one-shots; some are Wincest, some are some gen. All are excellent.
