Dean's Application To Be A Knight Would Not Be Accepted.
HERE IS AN AMAZING MERLIN/ARTHUR FANVID FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT. (Not by me, obviously. I wish I could have come up with this.)
Has anyone written a Supernatural/Merlin crossover comparing the two pairs who are ridiculously willing to sacrifice their lives for each other? Arthur and Merlin do, in some ways, feel like a no less secretive but far more healthy Sam and Dean. I would be very interested in seeing how they would react to each other when Sam and Dean, er, inexplicably turn up at Camelot. Perhaps they are investigating sinister stone angels and get sent back in time. Uther would probably try to have Sam burnt at the stake.
A few specific thoughts on Merlin (spoilers up to 'The Labyrinth of Gedref'):
On 'The Gates of Avalon': Prince Arthur, when being dragged out of a lake, looks terrifyingly like David Tennant. Seriously, take a look at these screencaps. Merlin goes diving for the future king and emerges with the Doctor. It is more than a little disturbing.
On 'The Labyrinth of Gedref': that was the most homoerotic rat-eating scene I have ever watched. Not that it has much competition, but I was impressed.
On Merlin in general: I am slightly disturbed by Merlin's utter lack of remorse when killing people. I mean, yes, all right, he only kills people to defend himself or others, but I still find it somewhat alarming. He is such a lovely boy most of the time! He wants to help everyone! And then, er, the people he helps poison him or grow up to kill his boyfriend.
ANYWAY.
Actually, that is a rather odd recurring theme in Merlin. When Merlin helps people, it creates problems; when he kills people, it solves them. There's certainly nothing wrong with not having a conventional moral message, but it did confuse me a bit. This is largely, I suspect, because I do tend to expect a certain morality from a family show, and so I subconsciously file aspects into the 'this must be the moral message' box as I watch and then become bewildered when I rummage through the box later and come out with 'DON'T HELP PEOPLE; KILL THEM'.
Of course, besides musing on television morality, I have been considering the far more pressing question of what Hogwarts Houses the characters of Merlin would be sorted into. Arthur and Merlin are both pure Gryffindor. Gwen is a Hufflepuff. Morgana I'm not sure about; perhaps she would be a Ravenclaw? Gaius would be a Ravenclaw, I think, although
reipan suggests Hufflepuff, and Uther, were he actually willing to go to the castle and put on the Sorting Hat, would be a Slytherin. (I very much enjoy the idea of Uther receiving an acceptance letter from Hogwarts. He would be furious.)
IMPORTANT QUESTION: does anyone know much about attitudes to homosexuality in the Dark Ages? Were Merlin and Arthur to be discovered to be in a sexual relationship, would there be shock, and if so would it be based more on the fact that they are both male or on the fact that Merlin is so far Arthur's social inferior?
(...yes, I may possibly be considering fanfiction. Possibly.)

Social inferiority: It's all about who's penetrating who. If Merlin's being bummed by Arthur that could well be considered Arthur's right as his Lord/whatever. If the other way around, possibly treason.
HISTORY IS FUN.

You just want to make it Doctor Who/Supernatural/Merlin so you can throw in the Doctor and his companion, Derren Brown.
I don't think you should worry too much about being historically accurate, it's not like the show really bothered to be historically accurate most of them either.

I DO NOT THINK THIS IS AN UNREASONABLE WISH.
Ahahaha, oh, Merlin, you and your sandwiches and your potatoes and your strawberries and your ethnically diverse knights. And I suppose there probably weren't many dragons living under castles in mediaeval England, either.

In other news, I would totally read that fic.

I don't even watch Merlin and this still sounds brilliant!
It isn't even the oddest crossover idea I've ever heard, either, which is oddly worrying. (That would probably belong to the bizarrely prevalent FF7/DBZ crossovers. HOW ARE THEY EVEN REMOTELY RELATED? Why not cross it over with FF9, where there are people with tails?! ...Ahem.)

(From the very little I know about Dragonball Z, I'd be more inclined to cross it over with IX, certainly. I suppose Cloud has vaguely Super Saiyan-esque hair.)

Not gonna lie, I would watch that.
I am curious about the fic you are possibly considering! Especially if it involves historically accurate attitudes towards sexuality because that is one of my FAVOURITE THINGS.

in other hp-related news; i watched philosopher's stone on on of the sky movie channels literally JUST NOW. i miss richard harris.
spn/merlin = YES PLEASE. also, stone angels = yes because then the doctor can turn up with his companion derren brown.

Derren and the Doctor in Camelot is an idea that excites me very much.

I WANT TO SEE UTHER'S REACTION TO GETTING A HOGWARTS LETTER. IN FACT, I WANT TO SEE HIS REACTION TO DERREN AFTER ONLY HAVING RECENTLY RECEIVED A LETTER FROM HOGWARTS. ("You're not from That Place, are you? Because if you are, BEGONE FROM MY COURT BEFORE YOUR HEAD LEAVES WITHOUT YOU. P.S. I like executions!")
no subject
Uther's reaction to getting a Hogwarts letter would be amazing. (YES. And Derren would be forced to hide the fact that he is, in fact, the headmaster.)

I'd say it doesn't matter b/c Merlin isn't in the real middle ages. There's this big high SPARKLING CLEAN gothic castle/Castrovalva thing that no one's building till at LEAST the 1200s, Morgana's clothes are all over the place, no one has a religious persuasion of any kind (except to Old Magic?), class issues are mostly peripheral, there are randomer minorities running around--basically it would feel odd to me to try and seriously include historical realities re: homosexuality in a universe that's already so wickety-wack with its relationship to RL. Mostly, I think you're FREE! FREE TO DESPOIL LEGEND!CANON AND HISTORY AND ARTHUR!! as you will.

I think what I was really musing on was how Merlin and Arthur themselves would react. Perhaps Arthur is just completely oblivious to Merlin's smittenness and rather confused by his manservant's odd behaviour, as the possibility of Merlin's being attracted to him has never crossed his mind. That could be fun.

Anyway, I watched the first two episodes of Merlin a while ago, and though I was charmed, I was not taken enough by the standard episode plots to not get bored halfway through. But I do want to watch it, and so I was wondering if you might perchance have any particularly recommended episodes, or an idea of which I should skip?
Also wondering if you have heard anything about the fact that that lovely Arthur/Merlin subtext is intentional and all. 'Cause, uh, that's what I heard, a while back. Maybe I should look this up.

THIS = PERFECTION. Also, I am very much inclined to think of Morgana as a Slytherin because of 1.12. THAT WHOLE ASSASSINATION PLOT DEVELOPED VERY, VERY QUICKLY. (Annnnd also because of her impending transformation to the Dark And Crazy side.)
ALSO, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS??? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfQPW24_Y38)

You make a good case! Morgana could very well be a Slytherin. I do think Ravenclaw is a possibility, though. (Although, when I really think about it, I can't find an argument for picking Ravenclaw over Slytherin beyond 'MORGANA IS AWESOME. RAVENCLAW IS AWESOME. THEREFORE, MORGANA IS A RAVENCLAW'.)

I am slightly disturbed by Merlin's utter lack of remorse when killing people - yeah... and he doesn't even remembering killing them! It comes a bit too naturally for him. Fail, writers, fail.
